2004 Powerbook G4 Faulty logic board

I'm in the same boat. Purchased in July 2004.

Ditto. 15" PB purchased in July 2004. Not the same sort of problem as has been described on the recalled units I believe (mine won't charge the battery), but still a faulty logic board. I have applecare, thank goodness, but getting a replacement board has been difficult (it should be shipping from Apple 28 days after the order was placed).

I too am in the same boat. 1.5ghz machine purchased in April of 2004. It's time for Apple to address the ENTIRE problem not just the serial numbers of the later machines. I've owned/own 7 Apple computers (plus a 23" Cinema display and 3 iPods) and have always raved about their products. However, when Apple extended the repair program to fix the select few serial numbers but left out the "older" machines I started rethinking my Apple raves. Now that I have spoken to customer service, sent multiple emails, replied to numerous posts and keep getting the same response "sorry, your machine does not fall within the specified serial number range for the repair program, there is nothing we can do." If Apple does not want to replace my logic board, at least send out a coupon or something to get my machine back up to the 1GB of RAM that I purchased.

Can you guys tell me where to find the serial numbers that are included? My 17" PB G4 constantly sleeps on me while I'm working. I've tried everything listed on every location on this site. It's been going on since November 05 and I bought it in Aug 05 brand new. What a pain!

I may be one more to add to the list of customers asking them to reconsider the numbers listed.

I've got the same problem! My PB was purchased in July 04, and went in for repair in July 05 for a grinding HDD, but came back with new HDD, screen, trackpad and keyboard, which means probably new logic board too.

My serial number is out of range and Apple aren't touching it. Come on, Apple, pay attention!

Hi, here's my lucky Powerbook 1.5 GHz:

-purchased in May 2004;

-went in for repair under warranty in April 2005 for the lower slot problem, with logic board replacing;

-July 2006: ...the same lower slot issue, another new logic board needed, but now, without Applecare, it's 650€ (830$).

Anyway, I think Apple perfectly knows this issue regards previous serial numbers 😟

My 17" PB G4 constantly sleeps on me while I'm working. I've tried everything listed on every location on this site. It's been going on since November 05 and I bought it in Aug 05 brand new. What a pain!

I had exactly the same issue with my 15 inch 1.67 PB. It kept going into sleep mode every few seconds. The only solution was a total replacement of the logic board and the 'pad' including the HD interface. If you run a temperature sensor program such as a widget I'll bet it gets a high and wrong reading every time. I'm pretty sure the temp sensor gives an overheat signal on these faulty boards and hence the machine automatically shuts down to protect the system from overheat. Your warranty runs out soon - I urge you to send it in ASAP!

Unfortunately my motherboard has been replaced with one in the serial range for memory slot failure. I truly hope it holds up!

I'm just adding to the list of logic board problems. Mind is also a pb g4, purchased july 2004.

me to, actually i was writing here with the same hope , but i think apple dont care so,so people, if apple doest fix the problem, dont buy more mac, maybe next time we wont have that problem, couse we are gonna get a regular and chiper PC...

My 15" powerbook was bought in 2004. Since updating to OS 10.3 the second memory slot is no longer recognised. I also can't run more than 256 in the working slot or it won't restart. My powerbook is also outside the serial number range for the repair scheme. Any help available..?

I'm having the same problem with my powerbook. Empty memory slot appears.
I hope Apple do something for us.
It's unfair to repair just the new ones and not the old ones, both have the same problem.

Bought my 15' Powerbook in Dec, 04. The ram-slot problem appeared about 1 year later while on a 6-month RV trip. Called Apple Customer Service and was told my serial number was out of range and there was nothing they could do.

Recently returned from the trip...took the PB to an Apple store...a "genius" checked it out...sent it out to be repaired! Free! To say I was surprised (and pleased) would be an understatement!

Did you need to make an appointment to go to the apple store and had someone look after your PB?
