Mac applications still not responding after multiple attempts to fix

Hello you wonderful people of Apple.

I'm a university student using a MacBook Pro (early 2011) that in the last week has started falling apart on me. Before last week I had no big issues.

The first thing I noticed was one week ago. I tried to save a file in TextEdit I had been writing code in. When I hit Command+S to save, I got the Beach Ball and no save dialog ever appeared. I ended up force quitting Finder, but after that I couldn't get it started again. I restarted my Mac.

This happened three more times whenever I wanted to use a Save, Open, or Print Dialog. Each time I would need to restart, which would fix the problem for about 6 hours.

I went online and found instructions for deleting the .plist files, which is supposed to help but did not help.

The next thing I noticed was Time Machine stopped backing up on a daily basis. It was then (and still is now) stuck on "Looking for backup disk..." when I attempt to connect to my Time Machine to back up. To remedy this I tried going to System Preferences and into the Time Machine screen, then clicking the "options" button to see what would happen. It froze. I haven't yet been able to get this to work. Each time I must end the process in Activity Monitor.

Starting three days ago, random base applications have begun freezing upon exit or normal execution. iTunes does this most often (because I use it most often, I think). As I type, this is happening with iTunes, Console, TextEdit, and System Preferences. The only way to get them working is to forcibly restart the computer. When I try to restart with the simple "restart" button in the top-left, it does not execute because Finder stops responding.

I have verified and repaired disk permissions and verified and repaired the disk itself twice. Earlier today I reinstalled OSX from my most recent Time Machine backup, now a week old.

I'm not sure what my next step should be. Note that I cannot use Console whatsoever. It does not show a screen when open.

Things I have noticed:

-Safari and Safari Web Content are together taking up 700MB Real Memory. I have no previous statistic to compare this to, but it seems high.

-I've been monitoring processes on Activity Monitor for days, and nothing horrible seems to be popping up. Average User CPU%: 7, Average System CPU%: 11 (by my guess)

I have used ClamXav to check my system; no problems. I used EtreCheck to check my system; the first time it told me a process took 99% of CPU, and I copied the info down but I can't find that file anymore (it was not backed up to Time Machine). Subsequent runs have proven to freeze EtreCheck.

I'm lost as to what to do next. This is a great computer, but I've always felt it's a little slow for 8GB of RAM. Is it possible I have a system leak? Or a non-detectable virus?

So far the only things I can do reliably are surf the web and... that's it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I tried to attach a screenshot of my Activity Monitor showing 5 applications frozen, but Preview froze; trying to save it in Paintbrush, the old "no save dialog" problem occurred (see above).

Given that you installed an older OS that was working, it would seem not to be a software issue.

When you repaired disk, did it repair anything either/both times? If so, this could indicate a HD issue.

No, I have no changes. As a refresh of the whole problem, based on what I now know from experience:

  • The issue is related somehow to backing up my computer.
  • Specifically, when my Mac tries to back up via Time Machine, it never gets past "Looking for Backup Disk..."
  • After (and only after) the Mac tries to back up, certain base applications (iTunes, TextEdit, Console, System Preferences, Finder) will no longer respond.
  • They either stop responding because (a) I try to quit them or (b) I work with them too much, triggering some other action.
  • As far as I've seen, when apps like Console are open BEFORE I start backing up, they aren't part of the problem.
  • I can quit and restart these applications as much as I want via Activity Monitor until Activity Monitor freezes up. When that happens, I just shut down my computer manually via the power button.
  • The problem starts over again when after turning on my computer again I forget to prevent automatic backups.

Right now, with Time Machine turned off, I don't have an issue. However, I also am not backed up on a regular basis. Until this is fixed I will use my external, but that can be a bit of a pain for me.

If I understand correctly, everything is fine except when Time Machine is trying to access the Time Capsule. In particular, you can back up with TM to a locally-attached hard drive without any issues. In that case, I suggest you erase the TC and start over. If it still doesn't work, get it fixed (if it's still under warranty) or else get rid of it.

Actually that's not the case; in a previous step, I tried backing up to a locally-attached hard drive via Time Machine and had the same issue occur. The problem seems to be with Time Machine, not my Time Capsule.

Unfortunately, my locally-attached hard drive is now having the same issue! I plugged in my new 1TB Western Digital and set it up as the new Time Machine backup destination. I had it start and left it for two hours. When I returned, it was still "Looking for backup disk...".

I didn't say it there, which is my mistake, but all the same issues with frozen applications occur. I really don't think my locally-attached hard drive has any issues. It is four weeks old.

I had to perform a factory reset on my Time Capsule to get things to finally work - Time Machine is now backing up to Time Capsule, though it took some time to recognize. I had to disconnect and reconnect multiple times.

It seems as though I won't have this problem again, but I'll keep an eye out. As for now, the solution is a factory reset. If that's it, I'll feel quite silly. I'll check back in a week.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

I held off until the OP's problem was solved, but had a question. My number is 100747, but I'm not aware of any permissions issues with my setup. It's a relatively new machine with users migrated from an old one. I repaired permsissions for each user just a few weeks ago, using the resetpassword process you outlined above. Should I be at all concerned?

I stil have the same problem, half of my apps are unresponsive this was most likely caused by power interrumption (hang, or freeze) that affected permissions.

i have tried repair disk several times with the original mac dvd install it had no effect.

i had enabled and logged with a guest account and the problem persists.

i have reset pram and nvram, didnt fix the problem.

i have started mbp in single user starup mode to change starup drive permissions.

Updated remote desktop client and it briefly when back to normal but next day the same apps were unresponsive, and now its getting worse, im getting stuck at the blue screen or desktop. the only way to start mbp when this happens is by pressing control+command+shift.

Could this be related to RemoteManagment ARDAgent.app.

The volume of my Macintosh HD appears to be Ok.

Are there any other solutions that dont require reinstalling os x?
