Country-specific app store - what!!!

I live in the UK, I'm now in the US and want to do something as mundane as download a subway map for NYC. There's a free app for that. But when I click install, it tells me I can't do it because my account is only valid for the UK app store. What !! Since when!!! And how inconvenient - doesn't Apple expect its customers to download apps when away from home?

So it's telling me to connect to the UK app store. But how? While in New York, it connects me to the US store... how do I get round this, why is Apple so stupid, and since when did they make this change without telling anyone!

Help, please!

Ian

This is the way the App Store (and the iTunes Store) has always been. Different countries have different licensing and copyright laws. Not all developers offer their apps for sale in every country. What does seem to be a more recent development is that Apple is starting to enforce the provision that you have to be in the country where you have an account at the time of download.

OK, so the lesson is to read the Ts&Cs. But Apple also needs to find a way to allow "cross-border" downloads. As a traveller I want - need - to have apps relevant to the country I'm in or about to be in. To give specific examples: When in San Francisco I want the BART app; when in NYC I want the Subway app; more inconveniently, I have a US domestic flight later in the week so I want to download the airline's check-in app. But I can't download any of these things, because they are "in" the US App store.

Will Apple read this and find a way around this problem? And it is a real problem; Apple and my service provider allow me to use my iPhone anywhere in the world, so why can't I use apps that are useful to wherever I am in the world?

The problem is a whole lot bigger than Apple. International copyright law is not something I would get involved with for all the money in the world. It's a mess.

The Problem is not something Apple can solve. Developers may not be able to provide Apps outisde of certain countries.

As Meg suggests the copy right law or even their own internal policies may prevent the NY Subway map from being available outside the US store.

Apple does not itself restrict the availability of apps. It just allows developers to determine where their apps can be sold.

Though i would question why an airline would not have its app available outisde the country. Unless its a local airline that has no international flights, in whch case they could choose not to make it available outside the U.S. store for whatever reason.

Dilber41, I can also get a version of the NY subway map on my computer (Mac) but I can't get it on my iPhone while I'm in New York. This seems perverse.

3 or 4 years ago I was in San Francisco and downloaded the BART app; I guess I can't now update it while in SF, because I can't access the store while in that city, which happens to be outside the country where I have my iTunes account.

Apple did not used to enforce the geographic restrictions as rigoruously as they do now. Before I knew better, about 4 years ago, I downloaded an app from the U.S. App Store while traveling in Japan. I doubt it would work now.

Personally, I think copyright laws in the U.S. are a disaster and international ones may be worse. However, this is what we have to work with.
