Printer not recognized via network

I've just bought a HP LaserJet 1022. When I connect it to my MBP via USB, everything works exactly as it should, the printer is recognized.
But normally, the printer is connected with a PC. There's a network between the MBP and the windows PC (via ethernet, not airport). In the System Preferences, the printer is listed, but it's just recognized as a "Printer", which means Mac OS X chooses a PostScript Driver for it... and this is not comatible with the printer.
It's not possible to select the right driver out of the list because this printer isn't there - when I connect it via USB it's selected automatically.

What can I do? Thanks for your answers in advance.

One of the ways in which I was able to install driver for HP printers was to connect the printer directly to the MacBook. The it searches for the driver. If it is not found, may be you could go to the HP site and try to download it. I found this process difficult, ie. finding the appropriate driver. The HP site also gives the option of getting the drivers, etc., for several printers on a CD rom since they indicate that the files are too long

I hope this helps.

Thank You "4iPodsTooMany". After strugling with this same problem for some time, trying various tips, and hints from many sources: finally one that works. I downloaded the gimp drivers package and Voila, life is good. I'm new to the world of Mac, so I wasn't sure if it was my lack of knowledge of Mac OS X or if it just wasn't possible to do what I was expecting

I have a similar problem with my recently set up wireless network which includes a MacBookPro and G5 Desktop, with an HP 2600n printer connected to the Airport Extreme via USB. The Airport Extreme has both computers on the internet just fine, however I cannot print from either computer. The printer shows up on both computers under Printer and FAX in System Preferences, however the printer will not print documents from either computer. Any help would be much appreciated...thanks.

PS- I have an Airport Express connected to my stereo, but the remote speakers icon in iTunes does not show up for either computer on the wireless network. Is there some setup required in Airport to resolve this? Thanks in advance.....I'm new to networking.

I am not familiar with Airport Extreme. However I have an Airport Express, and an HP PSc 1610 printer is connectyed to it. I am able to print from my MacBook Pro and Dell Lap top as well as a Sony Vaio desktop.

I had the most difficulty in getting the Sony Vaio and Dell Laptop to print to the printer on the Airport Extreme.

One of the things I suggest is to connect the printer directly to the computer through USB and see if it prints. If it prints then you know that the driver is installed.

After that you can connect the printer to the Airport Extreme and go through the steps outlined in the Airport Extreme setup instructions or go to the Printer set up Utility which is built in to the Mac OSX. I hope this helps.

Incidentally I connected my home stereo and I am able to paly the song from iTunes on the MacBook Pro to through the stereo.

Hope this helps.
