User uploaded fileYou Toast it! You drag the Video_TS file into Roxio's CD/DVD burning program and burn it. If the video is too big to fit on the DVD, Toast will automatically compress it for you! You'll get a full featured working copy of your original DVD.

Toast is made by Roxio.

Free ?
mkisofs, from the command line interface is pretty good imho but you must install it via fink or darwin ports (it's in cdrtools package) and use it from terminal.
mkisofs -dvd -o outpufilename.iso /path/to/filestoburn/folder/
Extracted from man mkisofs:
-dvd-video
Generate DVD-Video compliant UDF file system. This is done by
sorting the order of the content of the appropriate files and by
adding padding between the files if needed. Note that the sort-
ing only works if the DVD-Video filenames include upper case
characters only.

Is there freeware that will let you do it? Yes.
Is the freeware option a good solution? No.

I've transferred DVDs going from MacTheRipper using a plain wrapper and also encoding the movies to other formats then .vob and it's always been a massive PITA with many hours and DVDs made into coasters.

Take the advice and get Toast. It's cheap, and it'll save you a lot of screaming, yelling and other frustrations.

As far as free options that will both compress and write to DVD, as others have pointed out, options are a little limited in my experience.

Technically, you could use your Mac's Disc Utility and a couple of free apps, but it's a bit of work and your options are limited. The free "DVD Imager app" can make a UDF disk image from a VIDEO_TS folder. It't a pretty simple drag-n-drop situation. Then use Disk Utility to burn. Or if you want an interface to handle the burning, the free "Burn 1.1" app will do the trick.

The problem is, this doesn't get around your compression issues, which you typically encounter when burning the 7G original DVD MTR'd content onto a single-layer 4.7G DVD. Although it you only rip main titles you might be able get under the single-layer size restrictions.

If you find all of the above a bit of a head-spinner, Popcorn 2 is a Universal app and will do all you need it to do in this case (compress and burn). And it's cheaper than Toast.

Anyhow:

Get Popcorn 2: http://www.roxio.com/en/products/popcorn/index.jhtml
it's more recent than toast and cheaper. Toast has the features of Popcorn 1. If you want Toast wait for the next version. That will compress and burn. This legally backs up your movies, (provided you are permitted to do this where you live)

Going the free route:

Other things:
mkisofs IS DVD imager (if you go that way). You can just take the binary right out of there and have done with it instead of trying to build the dvdrecord or cdrecord pakages (sorry fink fans). This creates a burnable image.

ffmpeg or any derivative thereof can compress the video for you.

hdiutil will burn any image made w/ mkisofs and it's already in your system.

If you're going to backup your own movies just purchase Popcorn 2 or at the least Toast.

Good Luck,
-j
