SOLUTION: Some Music Won't Play After Upgrading Your iPhone To iOS7

After upgrading to iOS 7, some of you, including me, started having an issue where some of your songs refuse to play on your iPhones and iPods. There was also a red square inside of a red circle next to the song which I guess, was adding to the problem of the songs not playing. I had no idea what the issue was, so I searched and searched but came out with no solution to this annoying problem. Until last night. I was just messing around in the settings app and discovered that it was neither iTunes 11 nor iOS 7 that was the cause of this problem. It's all a matter of how the settings in your iPhone or iPod are set up. Follow these instructions to get your songs working again!


Step 1: Go to the "Settings" app on your Springboard (iPhone or iPod)


Step 2: Scroll down to the "iTunes & App Store" category.


Step 3: Where it says "Automatic Downloads", turn off the "Music" slider.


Step 4: Sync and enjoy playing ALL of your music!

Thanks for your suggestion but it did not solve the problem for me. It did remove all the songs that wouldn't play that had the red square/red circle symbol but they were all songs that are in my iTunes library that I bought so I don't know what is going on. I have a iPhone 4S and I have the latest iOS7 update and latest iTunes update so I don't know what is to blame or going wrong. I just know everything was fine befgore iOS7. I also tried to remove a playlist (no sucess) and reload a playlist (no success)

This is to everyone in general: I too had all of these mentioned problems and came here looking for answers. I tried EVERY told supposed solution, and nothing worked. I admit, I had just gotten my iPhone 5s and I was pretty bummed that my music wasn't working. I then sought out to find my own solution. The steps I'm about to mention are for everyone that purchased ALL of their music from iTunes and have the iTunes app.


Step 1: Open the iTunes app and go to the tab entitled "MORE"

Step 2: Go to "DOWNLOADS" and there you will see all of your purchased music

Step 3: The red square inside of the circle? Tap it. You will then notice numbers (ex. 234 mb, something related to that)

Step 4: Simply wait. It is a tedious process, but eventually you will notice that you are able to listen to your music.

Step 5: ENJOY!


These results were a lucky shot for me and I hope that they help everyone who has had failure with these other suggestions.

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring here. I've been having this problem since November. I didn't think much of it and figured I had just unplugged my phone during a sync. However after closer inspection it seems that this is a serious issue. I've tried EVERY single thing I could find on the forums here and google. I think this must be a serious bug that Apple is not admiting too. I have tried everything, and I mean everything to no avail:


1. Uncheck Sync Music and Recheck Sync Music.

2. Used PhoneView and went to the iPhone file system. Removed the itunescontrol folder and tried to resync music.

3. Erased entire phone from reset in the settings menu and resynced from backup.

4. Erased entire phone using the restore function on iTunes and resynced from backup.

5. Erased entire phone using the restore function and started a "new iPhone"

6. Recreated my entire itunes library by removing my .itl and .xml files. Reimported my library into a new itunes library using the XML file and resynced to my phone (which was restored from backup after erasing).


EDIT:


I was able to sync to another computer with no problem. So I'm guess it's its something in my library or my OS install.


The only thing I have not done is completly erase my phone and try to sync to the "new library". I'm under the impression it won't work though as it didn't even work when I had a fresh phone before.


This is ridculous. I'm not sure what is going on here. I'm not even going to call Apple Support because I have no idea what they will be able to tell me as I haven't seen any fixes here. Based on my experience of erasing both my itunes and my phone i'm not quite sure what the **** this could be other than a iTunes bug.


Oh and I should mention I have an iPad 4 that exhibits the same issue with this library.


Any ideas?

ok, so far I have tried a few things others have recommended:


.synced and synced and synced

.then I turned off music on my iphone under "automatic downloads" under itunes & app store under settings

.on my imac, with my iphone docked, I hit "back up now" under "backups" in iphone summary


*******Then, I tried something I did not read. on my imac, in itunes, under "Options" I unchecked "automatically sync when this iphone is connected" and checked "sync only checked songs and videos" and that worked for me. (Please note, I had already gone through and made sure ALL my music was checked prior to this, in desperation, trying to see if that worked.) After this worked, I went back and made sure that I didnt forget any music and if I did I synced again. I also synced each and every playlist while I was checking to make sure it was done.


***also, the music did not automatically download all at once, like it usually does. instead each song had a red button (see above) and downloaded one at a time. I kept my phone docked the entire time the songs were downloading.


They all play now.


I do not know if they will disappear again if I recheck the "automatically sync" button

Like most people's problems here, my sync worked fine prior to switching to the iPhone 5s iOS7. I have about a hundred playlists (smart playlists, folders, etc) that organize my 90gig library that I've collected and organized over the past 10 years.


My experienced led me to having to waste two afternoons trying to resolve this with two Geniuses at the store.


The first Genius issued me a new phone to replace my iPhone 5s. At first, it synced, but once I went home, it didn't sync. So I went back another afternoon to try to resolve this gain.


The second Genius and I tried something that I never tried yet (prior to this, I tried just about all of the suggestion ideas above), we tested it by moving the exisiting itunes library xml file, thus making iTunes create a new xml file. Droped hundres of mp3s into the library and it synced just fine.


Through trials and errors, we came to the conclusion that it was the iTunes library that was currupt and that the very last option that I wanted to hear was to rebuilt my library. REBUILD IS NOT AN OPTION! Unless I want music back on my iPhone.


Unfortunately, Apple does not acknoledge this bug and neither do the Geniuses that I've spoke with. This is a nightmare.


If anyone knows how to fix/repair an iTunes XML file, that might help. I don't plan on exporting all of my playlists either—that's not really a solution.

After all the 'tips' I've read and tried here, deleting the iTunes library fixed my issues, too. Seems like a drastic measure and I wish Apple would address this problem, but it's too late for that now.


I too have lots of music that I've bought and ripped over the years. If the songs were in the iTunes Music folder, it was simple to get them back by just doing a 'Add To Library' function of that colossal folder and then deleting the duplicates and music I didn't want in there. However, I have tons more on an external Drobo that will take forever to sort and put back, but I can only just smile and think of it as Spring Cleaning.

Yeah, I don't know. I have quite a large library (im a DJ). My ratings and playcounts are quite important to me finding tunes. I rebuilt the library from the XML file into a new library and it didn't fix it. It retained all my playcounts and ratings so that was good, but it didnt' work in fixing my sync issue so i'm guessing the corruption is in that as well. I refuse to completely start fresh and just add the files. That would completely ruin me.


Maybe they'll acknowledge there is some sort of problem and fix it.

I teach a class with music from iphone 4. very frustrated when I syned my phone to add new purchases from i tunes and a audio CD. most songs had this dot and would not play. I had to teach my class off my laptop

This morning after reading some posts here I opened itunes and connected phone. In summary (options) selected manually manage music. Then I went to my library and manually dragged the songs I wanted to my iphone, then i did a manual back up. It worked so tonight i will have the playlist i want in my phone. what a pain if i have to manually drag all my music this way.

I last posted to this thread on Dec. 22 with many of the problems listed above. I tried many of the solutions offered with no real success. I still have gaps in my library and have in fact lost some other data performing restorations, etc. (albeit my own fault for not backing everything up)


In fact, I'm even noticing worst performance in my iPad which I did not tamper with at all, other than to stay current with all updates. With all of my Apple devices, I have observed very noticeable buggy operation, sticky screens (stalls during wipe motions), app crashes, and incredible slowness overall.


Back to the topic of this thread...

The one striking thing that is hitting me about all of this is the glaring lack of response or bonafide solutions that should be offered by Apple support, in the month I've been checking in.

Still hearing nothing but crickets!


...and I'm STILL holding off on making those new Apple purchases, based on this new and improved crappy operability dilemma that we all seem to be forced to resolve on our own, which appears to have been solely inflicted by Apple...
