I don't believe that is a second partition. Have you modified the hard drive in any way? The freespace you see should be the current available space on your HD. Try selecting the Macintosh HD partition below and see if "erase free space" is available and run that.

Interestingly enough, is this a fusion drive by chance? The type of volume in both screenshots show: Logical Volume Group which makes this a hybrid drive with both flash and spinning drives.
Did you ever install Boot Camp on that computer?
I didnt modify it i suppose. Initially it was one single partition. I wanted to created partitions and ended up having this problem.

Fusion drive exists only iMac models so that is of no concern here.
Sananda, what MacBook Pro are you using? Retina or the regular MacBook Pro? The Retina use SSD's or solid state drives whereas the standard MacBook Pro's use standard hard drives. Judging from the available amount, you are using a standard hard drive. However, the volume type is considered a Fusion Drive seen here:

No, it is of concern because Sanadra was messing with the partitions. She could have inadvertantly caused something to happen, in this case the free-space issue, and it's imperative to get all of the details. 🙂
My iMac 27' Late-2012 does not have a fusion drive, yet shows that the type is "internal" the original poster doesn't indicate that.
Even if i try to add a partition to the free space or the macintosh HD, the 'Apply' never actually works. Even if i select the free space partition and change its format and press on 'apply', the end result stays the same.
You cannot erase the free space on an SSD drive. That's the reason it's greyed out as TRIM support should handle the garbage collection and free space issue. What you are seeing is completely normal...are you experiencing any issues? i.e. file corruption? programs not working? etc?
No issues as such. But my present drive just has 24GB left for usage.
I have 250GB space on my macbook. There are two partitions, one called Macintosh HD (82.39GB) and another is free space(168.27GB). I am not able to delete, create, destroy the free space or re-arrange the partition size of any kind. Plz Help!!!!!!
