Touch ID being Erratic

Wife and I got iPhone 5s units at the same time. She has had hit and miss success with touch ID. I am golden with mine, and also hers when I put a finger into her phone data. She is frustrated, and will delete fingerprints and resestablish on her phone. Her finger scan will work for a few times, and then it gets to be like it doesn't recognize her finger (left thumb or right thumb). Is anybody else having some issues like this?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.2

Good catch George.

Yeah, the "Twitter" thread touched on bdTID being due to unknown apps as Twitter wasn't being active.

Third party apps that don't play well with IOS and relinquish their hold on resources required for TID to work properly are at fault, although IOS should force the issue, or so you'd think.

To make matters worse, I left Twitter open pretty much all day along with a few apps in background I always run, and did not have one episode of bdTID. Go figure.

The 5th phone I'm trying is no better than the others so far. It just won't work for hours for unknown reasons and then it starts for a while. I also notice that the print I made after first receiving it seemed to be activated by a smaller and smaller part of the finger, instead of larger with time.

Do you guys have an opinion about scrubbing the button. I really rubbed hard with a clean dry cloth and made sure I pressed the button. I even had Siri squalking at me! For about 5 minutes, it seemed like all the prints I had in it were firing well. But, then a while later, they stopped responding again. I tried the hard rubbing again and it made no difference. It makes me wonder if there's some kind of film on my fingers that coats the device and deactivates it. But, I can't find any repeatable way of hand washing or drying or anything that will make a difference!

Lol .. in searching for a solution I notice some interesting stuff .. the touch id video shows how I want to use it , at http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/videos/ It's worth it to see how the rest of society uses it. Also, at Forbes, one writer with some interesting hopes for a software fix at http://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonykosner/2013/10/15/iphone-5s-touch-id-fingerpr int-scanner-is-a-fail-for-20-of-users-heres-what-to-do/ and http://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonykosner/2013/10/13/iphone-5s-touch-id-likely-o n-ipad-5-even-though-performance-is-erratic/

Yep, and I'd like to buy Apple stock at $85 again. and for Intel not to have tanked so badly today...

Yeah, I've seen the Apple video, and tried that after failing on my own to figure it out. It too failed a day later.

Saw the articles on Forbes (you still lurking here, Kosner...)

So I too tried the same thing, the same way, over and over again, expecting different results. Then I remembered what that was the definition of, and decided I had to figure something else out. So I did, and it does work.

As I stated before, print types are all different. What works for some, as we here all know, does not work for all.

Is it the H/W, S/W, method, karma? I don't know. I do know what works for me.

The wife is home next week. Should have a better shot to put some video up somewhere. I'll start a new thread here as well with a text only HOWTO. Maybe that will help some not finding the TID love yet.

I've had my phne for 3 weeks now. I was thrilled with Touch ID, even with occasional fails but it quit working completely today. I deleted my fingerprints but I can't set up new fingerprints--the fingerprint scanner sits there and laughs at me! No response, not even a blink...... I manage my life with my iPhone. I was dissatisfied with the security of a 4-digit passcode on my previous phone so upped it to 8 digits. Now I'm back to 4 digits. Yes, I know I can change to 8 digits, but I upgraded specifically for this feature. This is a major disappointment. BTW, I'm on iOS 7.0.4, the latest. Most unhappy.

Unable to create prints is the only problem that Apple suggests a Genius visit for .. suggest you call them and see if they can help you on that.

If you want to use a 4 digit passcode, you should enter it on the full keyboard rather than the dialer (disable simple password) AND enable "erase the phone after 10 failed attempts". A teenager, with a free afternoon, with access to your phone can try all the 10,000 combinations to get entry.

That's great news for me! I've been waiting for someone to tell me that a fix is coming. At my Genius visit, he told me Apple felt my problem would not be fixed by swapping devices, but he would not tell me that a fix was being worked on. He implied that the problem was with my finger prints changing or enrollment errors, and I needed to keep deleting and enrolling until I could get something that worked. I explained that I had something working, but it stopped working for no reason, and he persisted in telling me to keep trying. Thanks for posting your news.

He is not far from wrong. If you follow joe_Fo's instructions, chances are pretty good that you will get a print that will work with relative reliability.

Hello again.

I tried something and it worked for me

TID is working 100 % for 4 days since i made these changes.

i dont know if it is random or if really fix the problem so please try it out and report.

I did a reset to network settings to fix facetime, also i deleted any fingerprint i had and i enrolled 5 times my thumb with any possible way you describe here.since then i have 100 % success even sweaty finger.

i dont know if you must do both to get this work ,i just mention it because i did it same moment so i cant tell for sure.Take your time to enrolle your finger and make sure the home button and your finger are clean and dry.

push your finger well and slowly in any posible angle when you enrolle it.

please try it out and let me know if someone also fix TID problem too. i will report after a few days again and i hope nothing change for me

p.s (sorry for my bad english)

This morning, all I can say is WOW!! Talk about a major change in events. As of yesterday (gradually), and into this morning, I now have all three of my fingers failing (99% down to 0% on each one). So what drastically changed with/in my system?? All I have to offer is some new Diagnostic crash scenarios. In a side event, I was having problems simply purchasing an iTunes gift card with my iPhone yesterday (started in the morning and lasted into the evening). The iTines app would not allow me to make a purchase. I was on the phone 4 times yesterday with iTunes support, with no resolution (they said the reset some things in my account yeaterday - twice). I started to see degradation yesterday in TID from this point on. This morning, woke up with zero success with TID (I mean absolute zero!). I looked at the crash logs and it had an Apple Store entry and Apple Store.plist entry from yesterday (However, when I opened it, there was no data in it), also a Passbook (stacks+Passbook) entry from yesterday, that I was trying to get another Apple app store gift card to work with yesterday. I also have many log-aggregated entries, that are identified each day, starting on the 18th of Nov. And finally, daily awdd-2013 entries daily starting back on the 19th of Nov. So to sum it it, this stinks!!! I will delete registrations and re-register each finger. I am now absolutely convinced that this is a software issue, and Apple has a problem with their own apps hosing up TID. Please, oh please fix this soon Apple . . . .

P.S. Just did the control panel and calculator strategy. All three fingers worked for three entries each, and now they have stopped working. Tried it again, and still not working. Tried it again, and two of three fingers starting working again. A nightmare for most of us. I no longer have great success to report . . .
