iPhone 5 Power Button flaky since upgrade to iOS 7

I never had any issues with the power/sleep button on my iPhone 5 in the past. However, immediately after upgrading to iOS 7 I started having issues with the button not responding very well. It can take numerous presses to get it to work, or sometimes it just works on the first try. I have updated to the latest 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 but with no change in behavior. I am fairly certain that there is some sort of issue or bug with iOS 7, and that it is not a hardware issue.

Has anyone else come across this problem, and if so, was there anything found that could possibly fix it (aside from restoring an old backup of the phone before it was upgraded to iOS7)?

I screamed bloody murder after being reject for coverage on a major device defect and got a refurbished, new condition phone. I explained that I give up a bigger screen, multitasking and pay more for it, for Apple quality. I said that now that the quality is at least as bad as other device makers, I have no reason to continue purchasing their products. I mentioned that I also have an IPad Mini and a Macbook Pro. I also pointed out, in case they could not tell, that Im loud and love to tell my story and will make sure everyone I know is aware of the problem and how Apple responded. Keep asking them if they are okay with your dissatisfaction and give them time to answer. Ask them how they would feel. Keep pointing out that it is a deffect, not just the normal life of the phone. If you had dropped it or gotten it wet, you could understand, but that you did not.

Even though I got a new phone, I am very disappointed by what I had to go through. Apple needs to quietly replace these phones through 2 years and hope the media does not find out aboout the massive deffect. I talking about this in my circle, I became aware of a friend, a coworker and 3 friends of theirs with the same issue.

Good luck.

This is not an issue with the software update guys. This is a defect on iPhone 5 power button that wears out in about 13-14 months of usage just after you go out of warranty. Apple is aware of this issue but chooses not to accept this as a defect. I asked the Genius bar guy and they told me this is a common case recently and costs $269 to replace your phone. There is no repair option. I am very mad and believe Apple needs to take action or will lose their customers. All iPhone 5 owners that I know started having this problem in the month of 13 -14.

I believe if the numbers go high, Apple may start a recall program. Please encourage anyone with this problem to post here. $700 phone should not wear out this soon. Apparently the part is defective on almost all iPhone 5 devices.

Wise user, I agreed... Mine broke after 12 mths n 2 weeks. First, I thought it was a software issue, and had been trying to use the method that was suggested in thia forum. Well, it never worked for more than few times. Recently, I tried restore as new phone, and it also failed. So now I confirm it is a hardware defect. I have use many apple products, and started using iphone since the original iphone. Never have this issue until now. I really hope Apple have monitor this forum and do something about it. I paid high price for the quality, and this defect show otherwise.

Tip. for now, I turn on the accessibility shortcut so I can lock the phone with 3 clicks on home button. Thought I should share.

I'm sensing from the common themes in the threads that:

  • Apple is VERY aware of the problem - both in stores and online - and has instructed their Genious and Management staff to blame the customer for not having bought extended AppleCare coverage.
  • Apple is taking the stance of "not my problem - buy it again and hope it doesn't happen 13 months later again"

Obviously - very out of keeping with what we've all come to know as Apple's comitment to customer service and hardware reliability. Certainly something we've already taken into account in my household (which already has multiple Apple products) for Xmas. In my mind - paying a premium for Apple products meant a certain peace of mind and that they would stand behind their product when it was obviously their issue.

Now I know that was just an illusion - and will adjust my future shopping habits accordingly. Since I'm only planning on a few thousand $'s of tech purchases for Xmas - that won't hurt Apple. But maybe if enough of us do the same - Apple might wake up and realize they are trading away short term expense for long term profits.

I had exactly the same thought as you had. On The power button problem (with all eliminations) I am convinced that atleast my phone (iPhone 5 just 20

Days out of warranty) has a hardware fault. The second problem I have is a stupid blue band that keeps running across the screen when playing videos and in some other apps (support forum says people have observed and it happens when the processor is busy). I was foolish enough to buy the 5s and with a superior (64 bit processor supposedly twice faster) the same blue band is seen. My image of Apple as a premium company manufacturing highly reliable and top class products has changed for ever.

I don't care if they see this post but when I pay more for a product compared to the Samsungs or LGs then I expect a differentiation which is not just in simplification and human factors but top priority for me is reliability.

I'm just back from my local Apple Store in the UK having seen them about my iPhone 5 with a faulty sleep/wake/power button. The Apple guy ran some diagnostic tests and confirmed that it was a hardware fault. Also, he confirmed that it was outside the standard 12-month warranty. HOWEVER, he immediately went on to explain why I'd get a FREE replacement! His comments were as follows:

1) Under EU law, the iPhone is covered by a 2-year warranty.

2) Strictly speaking the onus is on the consumer to prove the nature of the fault after 6 months, but Apple are waiving this requirement.

3) The extra warranty is with the SELLER, not the manufacturer, so Apple will replace faulty iPhones sold directly by them, not those sold by other suppliers. Other suppliers should be operating under the same rules and so it's worth seeing if they'll do replacements as well.

I bought my iPhone from Apple, so they are the seller in my case, which is why they replaced my phone free-of-charge. The replacement has a 90-day warranty.

One thing that can worry the customer is the fact that you have to sign a Work Sheet authorising the repair which carries a price of £174.17 + VAT, i.e. a total repair cost of £209! The Apple guy immediately pointed out that this is an internal cost to Apple, it is NOT a bill and the customer should not worry about or respond to the email confirmation of the Work Sheet, it's simply a record of the warranty claim!

So, Apple did the right thing and honoured the extra warranty period provided within the EU, with no fuss or arguments. However, the Apple guy confirmed that the iPhone 5 is suffering a higher failure rate for the sleep/wake button than the other models.

Very useful post thanks Peter. This bears out exactly what happened to me in the Reading Apple store except my chap didnt explain about the legal responsibility.

I was also bit shocked when I got home to find what looked like a Bill for £209. When I phoned the store they explained I didnt have to pay, but was unexpected to say the least.

I think I was lucky though as I bought my phone from 02 via the carphone warehouse not direct from Apple. I had already tried 02 and CW and neither wanted to know as my phone was "3 weeks outside its warranty period".

Although I was fortunate, it is obvious this is a known fault and I think Apple should extend the guarantee to cover most ppls 2 year airtime contract.
