"This accessory may not be supported."

Ever since updating my iPhone 5 with the new iOS 7, this display message pops up while my phone is plugged in to the computer, using the original cable that came with it in the box. Researching this issue only informed me that the new iOS is no longer compatible with generic iPhone chargers. However, mine is the one made by Apple and so there should be absolutely no issues with it. While it is plugged in my phone charges on and off, never consistently charging. It's really irritating and is making charging a very slowgoing process. Does anyone else have any insight on this issue?

While we're at it, I noticed the new iOS 7 kills the battery life much faster than the previous iOS; I don't use my phone too much throughout the day, and it has been dying consistently twice a day. If I don't use it nearly at all, it seems to last only six or so hours.

Thanks in advance for any feedback! Hope not everyone is having these issues!

Alexis

Hi; I just did a software update a couple of days ago and noticed the battery wearing down faster but also this message of "this accessory may not be supported" began displaying everytime I pluged it in to charge, no matter how I pluged it in. I ran accross a post that recommended cleaning the charging port at the bottom of the phone, that fixed the charging problem, now the message does not display and it is charging faster, as for battery life have to wait and see. It makes sense, I'v had the phone for a year and never cleaned that opening even after carrying it in my pocker for so long. I used a toothpick and blew in it, I'm going to pick up a can of compressted air and blow it out once in a while. I think it's a cowinceidence (no spell check in here?) it happeded right after the update.

After exhausting every possibility about battery not charging I went in to the Apple store and asked them about it. My phone was a 4S and the charging issue got to the point that it would not charge at all. The tech noticed the corrosion on the contacts for the plug in charger and tried to clean them but 'corrosion' had taken its toll. I had just coming back from 3 months in a fairly humid area (Panama). Apparently the charging recepticle is not one of the strong points of the various Iphones with all the complaints I see online. I would have thought that they would provide a small pop off cover to keep it somewhat sealed from dirt and whatever since they know that its a problem for the masses. Now back in Colorado (with no humidity to speak of) so I dont think it will be a regular occurance. But now with a new 5s (is that there game plan?) life moves on.

At the risk of repeating what has already been said by many. I also get this problem with my iPhone 5. This happens with genuine Apple chargers and also happens with non Apple chargers but bought from the Apple shop. For instance I have a Belkin dock (bought from an Apple store) sitting on my desk. The cable doesn't get unplugged and plugged back in. It just sits there.

The Belkin charger this happens on is less than six months old. When I went into the Apple store I bought this from, they told me that the charger wasn't guaranteed and that I would have to buy a new one!

I also have other problems with my iPhone so I'm starting to get seriously unhappy with Apple products now.

Same issue after IOS 8.1.1 update. I believe it's a known issue.

If it's a known issue why aren't there 500 million posts about it (approximately the number of iPhones sold).

Because not all 500 million iPhones sold can run iOS 8.1.1?

I stand corrected. Only 200 million.

More to the point - why don't any of my 3 devices on 8.1.1 exhibit this problem?

You can get the answer just by reading the other messages in the thread that you posted to, but to summarize, the following are possible reasons for this message:

  • You are not using a genuine Apple Lightning cable or one sold by a licensed manufacturer
  • You are not using an Apple power adapter, or one that meets Apple's tight specifications
  • There is dirt or moisture in the Lightning connector on the bottom of the phone
  • The cable you are using is damaged (it is somewhat delicate, as it has 3 microcircuits in the Lightning connector)
  • The plug is not inserted fully into the phone
  • The phone has developed a hardware problem
