how do i install a forum on my web server?

Hi, everyone,

I'm interested in enabling a forum on my web server. For example, I could install "phpBB" as long as I have PHP and a SQL server enabled in my Websites service.

Does OS X Server come with forum capabilities (like the Apple Discussions forum) so I won't have to install my own? I did not find any forum capability in the Wiki service.

Can anyone recommend a forum solution for installing on OS X Server? Can anyone recommend phpBB or another solution? Do you have instructions for making the installation?

Thank you.

OS X Server doesn't have a forum feature. If you have web services running, you should be able to install phpBB fine, since mysql and php will be available. As with any content management or bulletin board software, you will want ot keep a close eye out for updates on the offical websites, as the unscrupulous section of the Internet is always looking for exploits for the most-used software.

Hi, Cameron,

Thank you for the tips!

As for PHP... I see the checkbox to turn on PHP support in OS X Server's Websites service.

As for MySQL... I understand that Apple has replaced this with PostgreSQL (aka Postgres).

After reading some other posts on the web, it seems that Server.app runs its own instance of Postgres for Server-related services—things like Calendar and Wiki. If I want to store my own data, I need to set up Postgres myself.

Can anyone suggest a cookbook for using Postgres on a Mountain Lion computer with Server.app installed?

Thank you!
