iMac runs ok in safe mode not in normal mode

System Specs:

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel core i7

16GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory

OSX Lion 10.7.5

System runs ok in safe mode. When I rebbot to normal mode it stalls and I get the spinning wheel. I attempted to download Mountain Lion but it will not download from the APP Store. Any ideas?

I ran the hardware check and all of the hardware checked good.

Any ideas?

Ok - I moved the folder to the trash bin, emptied the trash and then rebooted. The system is still unstable. Seems to work fine for 3-5 minutes then I get the spinning wheel again. After waiting several minutes it will operate again, but each time I get the wheel it takes longer for it to come back. Any other ideas?

Should I consider doing a restart with an older version of a time machine backup?

Thanks

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Linc - I ran the Console report per your suggestion. I noticed several references to Adobe Cloud (CEPServiceManager). I recently became a subscriber to the Adobe Cloud for Photographers program. I had suspected that this had something to do with my problems all along. I used the Adobe Cloud Uninstaller to remove the cloud from my system. As of this morning everything seemd to be working "normal".

I have been running the Cloud for several weeks without any problems. I'm not sure why it went bad all of a sudden. My next step is to reload and see what happens (unless you have another suggestion).

I really appreciate all of the help that you gave me. I was able to learn some valuable tips about the Mac system along the way.

Thank you!

Been having almost exactly the same issue with my late 2009, 27" iMac. It is booting in safe mode but not in normal mode where it does not get past the apple logo. Have tried many suggestions around the forums and not any closer (yet). It started about 3 weeks ago and I am running Mavericks 10.9.2.

I have ran the 4 steps suggested in this post. Steps 1,2 and 4 give nothing. Step 3 provides the following - Thank you in advance for any guidance you might be able to give around where my issues lie.

First a tip. You'll almost always get help faster by using a new posting when you need assistance with a new issue, even if it's similar. The only folks that will read this are some of the ones that helped before, if they haven't unsubscribed, people with similar issues and folks like me who spotted "ClamXav" in your analysis. You should take advantage of everything you've read here, but if that doesn't solve the problem it's time for a fresh start. A new posting will attract the attention of others who aren't taking the weekend off. That's just the way this forum is designed to work.

I'll start with what brought me here. It looks like you are a long time ClamXav user because you still have a two cron jobs to update definitions every day and to scan "Vuze Downloads" each weekday. ClamXav switched from using cron to using launchd with LaunchAgents a few years ago and the ClamXav app took care of the conversion automatically. I see the LaunchAgents, but for whatever reason the cron events are still on the books. Worst case these events are happening twice a day, otherwise it should not be causing any of the issues you are having. You might try opening ClamXav Preferences->Schedule and turn off both schedules, click OK, then re-open and re-set the schedules back to what they were. If that doesn't work for some reason, I can give you a Terminal command to delete them.

It's unusual to see no results for Steps 1 & 2 and almost unheard of to have no Login Items in Step 4, so you might want to double check that.

I know that Google Drive caused Finder crashes when Mavericks first came out, but I have not heard whether that go fixed or not.

I'm sure you will get advise from almost everybody to use CleanMyMac to uninstall itself. It's at the top of most troubleshooter's problem list. TechTool Pro will be next, but I have to have it as a ßeta tester and can tell you that no release version has ever cause problems for me, and certainly not what you seem to be seeing.

Perian is no longer supported, probably doesn't work with Mavericks, but doesn't cause issues as far as I know.

App Tamer duplicates the Mavericks App Nap function and may not be needed. The web sites says it's compatible, but I would guess you are no longer gaining much benefit from it.

Hopefully you recognize all the items in the list, still use them and they are all fully up-to-date. Seems like you subscribe to MacUpdate desktop which helps with most, but not all of them.

Hi MadMacs0

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I have had my iMac since 2009 and this is the first issue I have had.

I have re-checked the Step 1 & 2 - nothing. Step 4 has "CrashPlan menu bar" as I have re-installed this software today as one of my changes seemed to mess its database up. I have deleted ClamXav in anticipation of trial and error of finding the software that is troublesome.

Both CleanMyMac and TechToolPro do not exist on my computer as applications but I see some leftover code - any tips on cleaning this up?

I will delete Google Drive - the App Tamer may be the Caffeine App which I will delete too - I cant recall any particular changes over the past 3 weeks and so a little perplexed about where the issue arose or where to troubleshoot.

Thank you again.
