OSX Lion 10.7.5
System runs ok in safe mode. When I rebbot to normal mode it stalls and I get the spinning wheel. I attempted to download Mountain Lion but it will not download from the APP Store. Any ideas?
I ran the hardware check and all of the hardware checked good.

Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Next, launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.
I do not find MacKeeper in my Applications folder.
I ran the validate fonts routine and all of my fonts are OK.
Do you have any other ideas that might help?

You have 689 fonts in your home folder.
Open the Library folder in your home folder by holding down the option key and selecting
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move all the fonts in the Fonts subfolder somewhere else temporarily. Also delete the file
LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper.plist
Log out and log back in.
Linc - I moved all of the Font files to a Temp Font Folder so the original Font folder is empty. I deleted the other file as directed. Rebooted in "normal" mode and still have the problem. I did not empty the trash folder (not sure if that matters). What next?
Were you in safe mode when you took Steps 1-5?

Then you didn't follow the instructions. If you're unable to run Steps 1 and 2 when booted normally, do as follows.

You're right -- my mistake. If you've ruled out fonts as the culprit, then try uninstalling or disabling the "Nalpeiron ProTec" DRM rootkit. Preferably, get rid of the "pro" content-creation software that depends on it. You can disable the rootkit for testing purposes without completely removing it by deleting the folder
/Library/StartupItems/ProTec6b
and rebooting. To reactivate the rootkit, restore the folder from a backup and reboot again.

OK - I found the file but I'm not sure how to disable it. I renamed the folder but left it in the same place. Will this method work?
