Sent items show twice on MAIL (IMAP)

Hi everyone!

I need your help! 🙂

As the title suggests, I am experiencing an issue with the Mail app on my MacBook Pro. A few days ago, Hotmail/Outlook announced they started supporting IMAP and I thought that it would be the great way to sync my mail across all my devices (MacBook Pro + iPhone) and proceeded to set up my account as an IMAP account on all of them. Everything went flawlessly... Until today. Indeed, I noticed that when sending e-mails from Mail (OS X), the sent items would show up twice in the sent folder. It is all the more annoying since it syncs across my devices and I get these duplicates on my iPhone and on the web interface as well. Strange thing though, this does not happen when sent from my iPhone (or from the web for that matter), indicating clearly that the issue lies within the Mail app for OS X.

So my question is: does anyone know how to fix this and still let me sync my sent items across all my devices? What are the appropriate settings that I have to use to properly achieve this?

Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

This can actually be fixed from the Outlook web site.

  1. Go to outlook.com & login
  2. Click the gear icon in the top-right and select Options
  3. Under the Writing email heading, select Saving Sent Messages
    User uploaded file
  4. Select the following option:
Don't save sent messages. (But if you use POP to send Outlook.com messages from another service, those messages will still get saved.)
  5. Click the Save button.

Works for me. macOS Sierra using an outlook.com account with the mail application.

Does your email end in @outlook.com or something else? I wonder if you're connected to an Office 365 (O365) account for an organization (like your work, or a school) which uses Outlook on the Web, but isn't the same as Outlook.com accounts.

My instructions above should work for a normal @outlook.com email address. I'll have to see what I figure out for an O365 account.

Your list of options looks totally different than mine (see screenshot). If you've had your hotmail account for a while, it could be that it's not using the new outlook.com look & feel.

Looking online, Microsoft indicates that in order to upgrade to the Outlook.com user interface, you must do the following (source from Microsoft):

How to upgrade

The easiest way to upgrade is to sign-in to Outlook.com:

  • Go to http://outlook.com
  • Sign-in with your existing Hotmail account (@hotmail.com, @msn.com, @live.com, etc.)

Hope this helps!
