Sent items show twice on MAIL (IMAP)

Hi everyone!

I need your help! 🙂

As the title suggests, I am experiencing an issue with the Mail app on my MacBook Pro. A few days ago, Hotmail/Outlook announced they started supporting IMAP and I thought that it would be the great way to sync my mail across all my devices (MacBook Pro + iPhone) and proceeded to set up my account as an IMAP account on all of them. Everything went flawlessly... Until today. Indeed, I noticed that when sending e-mails from Mail (OS X), the sent items would show up twice in the sent folder. It is all the more annoying since it syncs across my devices and I get these duplicates on my iPhone and on the web interface as well. Strange thing though, this does not happen when sent from my iPhone (or from the web for that matter), indicating clearly that the issue lies within the Mail app for OS X.

So my question is: does anyone know how to fix this and still let me sync my sent items across all my devices? What are the appropriate settings that I have to use to properly achieve this?

Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I just changed Sent Mailbox to On my Mac for my MacBook Air and Mac Mini and it worked. I don't have any duplications on my iPhone, Air, Mini or Webmail. Even better all sent boxes on all devices are synced (don't ask me how).

The screen grab is from my sent box on Outlook webmail. It clearly shows my testing outcomes from each device without duplication.

Ok, here is the update for Sierra Mail:

A complete mess again!

Once I started Mail and synced my accounts and before I started my tests I noticed a rather important change. They seem to have dropped "Sent" emails from being part of the conversation! Like ***? That's going backwards no? Am I wrong or didn't sent emails show in conversations by default without enabling "Include related messages"?!

What you will get out-of-the-box are conversations showing only the incoming emails.

They removed the "Store sent messages on the server" tick box all together. No that it makes a difference.

You can enable "Include related messages" under Viewing options in Preferences to fetch your sent email but then you are back in square one:

If you store Sent emails to you local Mac Sent folder you will get one from there and one from the server's sent folder.

If you store Sent emails to the server's sent folder then you will get two in there!

I don't use "Include related messages" as it has a tendency to bring a lot of crap.

So to wrap things up, you have a "cleaner" conversations view because now you are missing all your sent emails. And this is not limited to outlook.com or hotmail.com accounts. It applies to everything.

You can keep it this way if you wish or enable Show related emails and still see the duplicates.

I suspect you can configure outlook.com now not to store sent emails on it's server folders and have your Mail client store them there for you but it would be interesting to see what happens if you send emails from other clients, like Mail in iOS, the browser or whatever else.

😕

Update: You can't configure outlook.com to not store sent messages. Stuck to duplicates as one Outlook.com will store no matter what and the other that Mail stores you can't switch off.

Another update:

In Sierra (Mail Version 10.1 (3251)) it seems that if you switch off "Include related messages" and manage to get a conversation going, duplicates no longer show!!!!

Now I have no direct idea how conversations can be made to include sent messages but somehow it seems to work now. I have all folders (Drafts, Sent, Junk, Deleted, Archive) matched with the server's folders.

Note also that the Sent Mailbox it matched with a Sent Messages on the server.

Could we be looking at the answer on this finally?!

Right! I think I have fixed it! I just changed my "Sent Mail Box" To "Sent - On my Mac" instead of 'Sent - Outlook' and I no longer get duplicate sent emails. It looks like it's continuous across each of my devices as well. I use a Hotmail account so if you might have different settings, all i know is that this has fixed the issue for myself. Give it a go! Here is a screenshot of what it is I selected:

Sorry you feel that way Alex McKay1.

Given the current situation we are all doing what we think can be done.

You are always welcome to speak with Apple who I am sure will spend more time with your problem than we do between us (not).

Anyway, my settings in Sierra Mail work without a doubt. And this is on an account that pre-existed and had the problem.

So under normal circumstances you will not get duplicates any more as long as your conversation contains Sent messages without Include related messages.

I don't know the precise logic Mail uses to identify what constitutes as a "conversation" though. That is why I say that under normal circumstances is Sent messages are included in your conversation they will not be duplicates any more.
