How can I move my photos from iPhone to a flash drive?
I want to take my photos off my iPhone 5s and place them on a removable storage device, a flash drive. I don't want the only back up to be on my Mac. Can this be done?

Yes, but it's not an Apple solution. Go to Google (or better yet, Amazon.com) and look for "i-flashdrive"
You would first need to import the photos in your camera roll to your Mac, then once on your Mac you would transfer them to your external hard drive.
Well, silly me did that already but I didn't select to delete them off my phone. Looks like I have to download again and make sure I select "Delete" from Iphone. Created more work for myself.😀
If you don't want to download again, you can transfer photos from your iPhone to a flash drive using software like FonePaw iOS Transfer or Wondershare, this kind of software can transfer files between iPhone/iPad and computer(Windows or Mac) directly.
what can you do if there is insufficient storage space to do this on my mac? i have 15,000 photos on my iPhone and i want to move them to an external HD without using my Mac as temporary cache.. any tips?
Use third-party app to copy the photos off from your iPhone and save them on external drive. Check the method 3 in this tutorial. it should help
