Safari iOS 7 keeps flashing previously closed tabs upon reopen? Security Problem

Hello, I am using an iPad 2 on iOS 7 with safari in private mode. Safari on iOS 7 has a bug (iOS 6 didn't behave this way) where you can close tabs and leave the safari app and when you come back to open safari, it will flash an old tab on the screen before loading a fresh blank page. The weirdest thing is the tab isn't even the most recent tab, just something random during the day. I could just picture this causing problems for people e.g. Husband shopping for surprise trip online and expedia flashes on screen for his wife even though he thought he'd safely closed the tab or any other situation where you don't people getting a peek at your business. What is the point of private mode if safari chooses to randomly display previously closed tabs to anyone?

Please post if you've noticed the same behavior.

It is a serious problem. No response from Apple: they don't respond to this forum, and they don't respond to feedback either.

The best, safest solution I can come up with is to navigate away from sensitive/private content before closing/multitasking out of an app. For example: after you are dons browsing in private mode, pull up images of a honey badger before you close the tab and exit private mode.

Regarding why, some fanboy on the wiki states it's a feature for saving ram and battery life. Speaking of fanboys, another one removed our posting on the wiki page and subsequently protected the page from restoring it.

Apple's developer guide even encourages app devs to have the app hide content before it passes the app close command. Unfortunately, almost no apps do that, even Apple's own Safari fails at it.

Agree with everything you said. Also, regarding your work around... I have seen a very old page show up when activating Safari. Your work around may or may not be effective against this issue. Please see my comment on Page 10 as to why this is happening. And my thoughts as to why Apple has not fixed this - They don't know how to without removing what they consider a "feature." Thanks.

😠I Have this problem too! It's very random and most times it shows the same screen from months ago MULTIPLE timeS. There is really no rhyme or reason I can make out. Has anyone found a way to fix this yet!?!?!? Or must we ALL call Apple computers and make individual complaints until we just all clog the phone lines for them to notice or even care!?!?!

I'm having this same issue with my iPhone 5.....this seemed like the best thread to post in even though it is iPad.

A few weeks ago I was browsing adult websites on my iPhone in Safari. A few days later I'm closing apps and see a graphic image pop up when I'm scrolling between apps. I can now replicate this happening by opening Safari, rotating the phone and double clicking home.

I've tried everything but no luck. It seems from my research this happens to folks surfing adult sites mostly....is that a coincidence?

If I could just get it so show a different image this wouldn't be such a big issue. This is a serious security flaw, and I was hoping Apple would address it with the latest update, but nothing.

Has anyone tried doing a full wipe of their phone and starting from scratch? I think this wouldn't solve the problem, as whatever cache is holding this image I'm pretty sure would still be there.

Someone mentioned legal action, which seems like a sure class action lawsuit based on this major security flaw that isn't getting addressed by Apple.

I'm just posting to see if anyone has any success stories, as I really need this fixed on my phone.

Same here. Both my iPad and iPhone experience this same issue.

It seems to be related to apps that don't clear the screen of sensitive information after the command

applicationDidEnterBackground:
is sent before closing the app (As Rick mentioned on page 10 of this thread). I think content related issue you are experiencing is a coincidence. Safari does this independent of content, same for Tumblr. It's curious that Safarim being an Apple native app, is the resounding issue here and that app's content can vary wildly between highly sensitive (adult, financial, personal, etc.) and completely inert (lol cat pictures).

At this point I have made the conscious effort to change to nonsensitive content before closing apps. I've noticed that some apps already clear the screen when closing, while others simply pull up a splash screen (instead of a saved screenshot) during the 1-2 second loading time. I guess I am getting used to which apps suck at it and which I don't have to worry about. This is not a fix though, but it works for me interim. I cannot imagine how this issue would affect my business mobile was an iPhone.

Hey kseipryn, thanks for the link.

I downloaded the Battery Doctor app and followed the poster's instructions. On my first attempt it did not work and the graphic image still flashed in Safari.

I tried running Battery Doctor again and after opening Safari and rotating from portrait to landscape for the past day, it seems to have fixed the problem. Note that it doesn't fix the issue of an old image flashing in Safari, but it at least let me re-create the issue and now a much nicer, non-graphic image is flashing in Safari. I used to be able to get the graphic image to flash pretty easily by rotating my phone and multitask switching between other apps and Safari, but after many attempts it appears to have been overwritten with this technique.

Thanks!

While it helps my situation (and is a great lesson on being careful when looking at adult sites on my phone) it is still a pretty major security flaw that Apple is not addressing.

I'd try it again. The first time I started the Battery Doctor app, I did the Junk and Memory tests and it didn't work. The 2nd time I opened the app, it presented me with a screen saying to accept or acknowledge what the Battery Doctor app does that I didn't get the first time.

After running the app, make sure you are rotating Safari in all directions (especially upside down) and multitasking between apps. I did this in all directions for a while, and it seemed to work.

A few days later, I haven't seen the image, and believe me, I've been trying to replicate it to make sure this worked, which it appears to.

Good luck
