iPhone 5s Power Button Rattles

My iPhone 5s's power button makes a rattle noise. And no, it's not the camera lens. That makes a separate, distinct noise that isn't particularly annoying. That, and if I hold down the power button, the noise goes away.

My 4S doesn't have this issue. Everything is solid, including the camera lens (surprisingly, as one would expect that it can't be solid technically).

I wouldn't mind this rattle noise, except that it's audible during calls (both to me and the receiving party), as well as when recording videos (or anything else that records sound).

Anyone else having this issue? I just had my iPhone 5s replaced this morning due to interlacing lines on the screen, and the same thing persists on my new one. So I'm at peace of mind knowing that Apple just overall opted to use bad displays for their 5s line. But this power button rattle didn't exist on my previous 5s.

Why didn't they put the homebutton on the other side? I mean, it's located at the second mic that is between the camera and the flash. And if it rattles there, it is pretty obvious that it is recorded... 😟

I mean, even Samsung and LG do not have these kind of problems. Apple should be able to fix this, or not?

I don't like Samsung and LG, but that's why I am even more sad because my favourite tech company doesn't give us a hint what they'll do... 😢

From so many people I heared that they are so angry about this. They gave up exchanging the phones cause the next ones always had the same problem. But with only us few posting here, I guess Apple will never change this. 😟

Just because there are few posting here doesnt mean that we arent many! There are hundreds of forums discusting this problem and many owners are returning theyr fones to stores! This numbers count to Apple and they know that something is going wrong on this! here on portugal , Iphone was released last week and there are already lots of people returning the units back to stores!

Apple went to great lengths in their promos and advertising saying how well, how precisely the 5S was designed AND constructed. Check them out on the website.

A power button rattle is the antithesis to the assertions Apple makes in their advertising. It is therefore misleading and decptive. It entices people to buy it on such a promise which is, in fact, untrue by virtue of the button rattle.

The more people return their rattlers to store and demand replacements, the sooner Apple will be forced to insist (but ignore) on one other thing they extoll about the 5S: Quality control or re-design

Another way is to take Apple to the Consumer Protection Authority, if you have one. I will if I have to

Ok so I got same problem (video and voice memo had very loud rattles when shaken) so I did some research on the problem. The rattle could be a result in the redesign in power button for the 5s, because there were many power button failures on the 5 (including my friends, had to replace the phone). The 5's button might of been too tight causing the internal button the get 'stuck' hence designing the 5s to be more springy and loose to make it less likely to get 'stuck'.

These are just my thoughts, so dont take it too seriously. I dont think I will exchange my phone though unless Apple makes a official statement about it.

Well I took my new 5S back to the Apple store for this problem and 2 other minor build quality issues.

I was told not to sweat the small stuff and that, at the end of the day, it was a mass produced item and that there were bound to be small imperfections with it.

They wouldnt entertain a swap over (even though it is just 2 weeks old) but did say I could book it in with them, at which time they would take it apart and attempt to re-seat the switch etc.

I noticed that on the rear for example, on the top shiny part - it was more raised than the side without the flash.

I guess for the time being at least, this is how they are made.

As time goes on and the factory gets used to making them, there is a chance that later iterations will be more perfect.

I still think that paying this much for a consumer device, you would expect it to be perfect.

Maybe that's just me.

Either way, I dont feel like I can be the a*@hole that goes in to the Apple store because his home button is 1mm lower at the top than the bottom, when it should be flat not sloped. Even if I feel this is starting to impact on the fingerprint sensor.

That is total bull... If you are in the US they have a 30 day return policy, 14 days in most other countries. They absolutly should have either returned or exchanged it no issue. Telling you defects are normal is in no way acceptable. If it were me I would call Apple care and ask to speak to cutomer relations over the stores handling of this. Telling you a flawed product is the standard and they can't excahnge it is 100% not Apple policy and this rogue element in retail needs to be squashed. I'm almost positive you will get your issue resolved by making the call, they have always been very good even if some jerk at a store isn't.

Same problem here (Power Button) - (Iphone 5s, Owned 3 Days and kept in an official leather case).

I first noticed a rattle when I sat the phone down on my desk. It mostly seems to happen when I move the phone from side to side, so it seems the power button is loose and sliding from the left to the right side of the recess, as opposed to the front and back (If i place my finger on the button all noise stops), I'm waiting for my Nano sim to arrive from Virgin so I don't know if the sound will be audible on calls and recording (I'm guessing it will be from what I've read). My Home button seems fine (Hopefully) - maybe a tiny bit plasticy/clicky sounding.

Maybe a workaround would be having some sort of small profile, sturdy sticker (Provided by Apple) placed over the power button area with a shorter (Width ways) hole/cutout to physically stop the button from sliding about in its housing, I know that's a bit of a botch-job but......

I suppose the thing to do is wait to see what Apple says - I don't want to order a replacement only to find it has louder/more apparent rattling. All in all I think the problem makes the phone feel cheaper and it's one of those annoyances that won't go away, so I just hope they announce something soon so we can get replacements that definitely solve the problem.

I was just in the Apple Regents St store and talked to the store manager about the 5s rattling on my replacement phone. He denied that the on/off button rattles despite it being obvious. He claimed it's the camera lenses and is design feature. It was totally obvious he was lying. But they are being paid to lie, being employees. But it's disappointing from Apple. I believe the Apple staff have been told to lie about the rattling since it's such a pervasive issue.

Unacceptable Steve Jobs would have gone ballistic over this.
