iPhone 5s Power Button Rattles

My iPhone 5s's power button makes a rattle noise. And no, it's not the camera lens. That makes a separate, distinct noise that isn't particularly annoying. That, and if I hold down the power button, the noise goes away.

My 4S doesn't have this issue. Everything is solid, including the camera lens (surprisingly, as one would expect that it can't be solid technically).

I wouldn't mind this rattle noise, except that it's audible during calls (both to me and the receiving party), as well as when recording videos (or anything else that records sound).

Anyone else having this issue? I just had my iPhone 5s replaced this morning due to interlacing lines on the screen, and the same thing persists on my new one. So I'm at peace of mind knowing that Apple just overall opted to use bad displays for their 5s line. But this power button rattle didn't exist on my previous 5s.

Just received my iPhone 5s + official case today, £744 here in the UK.

Power button rattle present and overall feels nothing like the quality of my 4S. A big deal to me, 'run and gun' video shooting one of my top 3 reasons for owning an iPhone. Has went straight back into box and refund arranged. Stark contrast to my new iPad Air, which indeed has the precision engineering hallmarks you'd expect from Apple.

Very sad, reeks of ball dropped in favour of fashionista buyers. Somewhat difficult to believe Apple Quality Control missed and/or deemed this acceptable?

Hi all,

This is just to add my "+1". Nothing new to add to all you have shared already but just sharing my experience.

I have just received yesterday 2 5S ordered in Apple UK online store: 1st 16GB Space grey (mine) shipped from China and 2nd 16GB Gold (to gift) shipped from the Netherlands.

Upon opening the Space Grey one's box, I straight noticed the important and noisy rattle :(( of the power/sleep button (to me it is clear this is the guilty). What I have learned reading all your posts:

  • This is a serious design issue as beyond cosmetics it does impact the video recording feature and quality which is a major product failure.
  • It is not worth it to ask for an exchange as in 99.99% of cases they will give you new handset having exactly the same issue. The only advantage here for the users community is that by doing this, the message will get faster and stronger to Apple.
  • The best solution, if at all possible at this point, is to ask for a refund and wait for Apple to correct this issue in the next production chains then buy a new one.
  • Report this issue officially on Apple feedback online form http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Thank you for ll your posts.

All the best.

I am seeing the exact same issue with the rattling sound. I went to my local apple store this morning only to be told it is the camera rattling and is considered normal. To me a rattling camera is not good and what damage is it causing to the phone itself internally. This needs to be sorted out urgently by apple as this is totally not good enough.

I am sending feedback to apple regarding this in the hope something gets done to fix this unwanted rattle which I consider a huge fault.

I just upgraded to the iphone 5s. Replaced the phone once already. I also tested a few floor display models, they all make the same noise. I made an appointment with my local Apple store Genius Bar and the employee said it was normal...He pulled his phone out and it also made same noise. I agree with everyone in this discussion that this is not acceptable. When you spend as much money as you do for a new iphone, it shouldn't sound like a piece of junk. I really liked Apple products in the past. I have a Macbook pro and ipod, but after this if this is not resolved soon, I think I am going to return the phone while I still can and get a Samsung Galaxy S4. They seem to be a better product. Friends have them and they really like them and no issues. Very disappointed in you Apple, wonder how Steve Jobs would feel about this?

Recieved iphone 5s on the 16th of Jan, huge rattle, which badly affects video and calls. Sent it back and it was replaced. I just recieved the new one today and the new one also has a huge rritating rattle - this is supposed to be a leading tech company, its like buying a Ferrari with noisy brakes- Steve Jobs would never have accepted this

Time for us to band together and hit twitter and other social media- maybe if we start to affect sales they will do something about it!!!

Ist thing, please record videos in the correct orientation, that really bugs me. Secondly at some point a new iPhone will arrive, and this will be old news. Put a case that holds the button in like the Apple leather case and you wont hear it anymore. Apple wont change the way the phones are made when new handsets will be coming to market at some point.

Sorry about the orientation but thanks for watching- i still dont agree that a product and brand of this nature could accept a flaw in design that impacts on the user experience and quality of the product. BTW just tried 10 differnet cases including iphone leather case and it still rattles- I have now cut a bandage and stuck it on the power button then put a cover over it, a bit better but I hardly would consider myself a happy customer, I just hope they replace mine when the new one comes out.

I've returned exchanged more three devices, all for the same reason (i.e. power button rattle that can be picked up on video). My wife iPhone 5S bought November last year never had a problem. I was hoping Apple would fix the issue with time but it's apparently not regarded as a defect. The explanation apparently is that the loose button avoids it getting stuck with time. I'll return mine again for a refund this time and will wait for iP6, no sense playing this lottery with the new release just around the corner.
