How to change my HDD to an SSD for my MacBook Pro ?

Hi All,

I'm looking for some information about HOW TO change my HDD to an SSD in my MacBook Pro ?

the "mecanical" part of the job is fairly easy...

But how to transfer content of my "old" disk to a new SDD disk.

I'm using Timemachine to backup my HDD to an external USB3 HD.

How should I prepare the new SSD in order to restore my machine (data & softwares) from a Timamachine backup ?

Thanks to give me some directions.

Best Regards,

Philippe

Thanks a lot again for reply. However it's causing additional couple of question.

1. Why Alfred and Caffeine shouldn't be installed? Very handy applications, I really like using them.

2. After I adjusted all from your advices, should I format SSD and and make completely new clone, or I can do it refreshing the existing one? It just should be a much faster to refresh existing one, it took me 3 hours yesterday to make a clone.

Thanks!

1. You can do same with the correct settings in OSX Mavericks. You must understand, that a lot of "windows" like tools, do not work the same in Mavericks as in earlier OS's: the Ram handling is very different.

2. When you do it with CCC, set CCC to 1:1 clone: everything that is not in your inside disk, should be removed from the clone disk. So you end up with an exact clone. It will take 10-15 minutes that way on an existing clone. You do not have to remove the existing files from the SSD.

The SSD was formatted Mac OSX Extended (journalled), GUID partition table, check that.

3. After making the clone, start from the external disk --restart while holding the Alt(=option) key-- and choose the clone, to make sure that everything is OK before you switch the disks. Shutdown correctly and switch the disks. Very careful reposition the connectors, they are damaged easily.
