iPhone 5 IOS 7 battery dead when really at 29% after taking photos

My iPhone 5 (1 year old now) has started having a battery problem since I upgraded to IOS 7. It will shut itself off under these circumstances:

  • battery is below 40%
  • I take a number of photos using the Apple Camera app
  • photos taken in rapid sequence (no flash) or one or two taken with flash

The next thing I know I see the radar symbol and the phone shuts off. If I try to turn it on I get the drained battery icon with the power plug moving into the screen an it turns off.

I then plug it in to turn it on and find that the battery is still around 30%. If I am not near my charger, I can wait about a half hour and power the phone on. I just did that and the battery is at 29%.

What is going on? This is not right. I've never seen this before and have had 2 other iPhones. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Same here. IPhone 5, dated October 2012.

It shuts down if I make a call and battery is below 25%. After 5sec of call, IPhone shut down. Cannot restart it. If I wait few minutes, I can restart it and battery is usually back to 24 - 23%.

It happens with Maps as well, when in navigation. Even if the IPhone battery is 60%, after less than 3 minutes it goes down to few percent (3 - 4%) , and IPhone shuts down. After 30 minutes or so, it can restart and battery is at 40% usually, without any charge.

It makes the IPhone barely usable as soon as battery goes down.

I have tried following:

  • Drain battery fully and recharge
  • Restore to factory settings
  • Disable Update in background and location services

Nothing really helped.

I would say it is battery issue and Apple is not willing to admit it. For everyone it starts around the time when he updated to iOS 7, but that is due to fact that it is a bit more demanding on power. But the main reason is still battery which is slowly going to die. I tried restarts, reseting everything to stock, reinstalling ... The issue was gone only after replacing battery, even it was confirmed as healthy by Apple IT.

..exactly the same issue...so frustrated...it first started out happening @10%, then 24 and today 47% At this rate I hv to carry a charger with me. My 'mobile' phone is becoming a tethered phone that has to remain on the charger, ugh!

I do wonder if using a non iPhone charger might be part of the problem??? And even it is the case Apple needs to fix this. Or make the phone chargers sturdier or more reasonable replacement price IMO.

Same problem here, iPhone 5. After upgrading to iOS7 the phone is in jeopardy of shutting off at any time below 20% percent battery power. Resetting the phone seems to help for awhile.

Happened this morning at 19%, I believe this was logged at that time:

In case anyone searches and is still looking for a fix.

I started having sudden battery death at near 50% battery (once at 48%, 38%, 35%, 28%, etc) when I updated my iOS to iOS 8.something (in the past 2 weeks). I updated again in the past 3 days hoping the new update would fix this problem. A tech-y friend told me it sounded like a "firmware" problem and that my phone wasn't interpreting my battery level correctly. I don't understand what this means... I just knew my phone was turning off when it should not have been and I didn't feel like I should have to carry around a charger all the time.

She found this fix for me, which I found pretty easy to follow as a non-tech person. I did it last night, and tonight I've been using the camera and photo stream app when my battery was under 30% without any sudden shut-off. Keeping my fingers crossed that the fix is for real.

It looks promising but I have a significant amount of information that won't be backed up if I were to try this...

Dec 2014, iPhone 4S still running 7.1.2 and recently getting this problem after trying out the notorious battery-draining app Ingress. Just earlier I had the phone turn off at 48%, managed to get it back on but then it turned off at 34%, after 5 mins I managed to start it but then it died at 22%, followed by a short session where it died at 20%, and then somehow when I got it working again it had gained battery (back up to 28%)...

Does Apple ever address this problem in this thread? Because all I see are 234 posts from people with the same problem, and a few suggestions that may or may not fix the problem.

Where is the actual fix?

Community support is great when ordinary people can share their experience, but Apple needs to step up and address the issue and post a fix.

I have the same problem 😟

I recently replaced my phone battery

and used my phone as normal it turned off and I put it in charger , and that's really normal

second time when it goes down , my phone shuts down at 10%

and I thought that's normal cause I didn't use to see it at 10%

and everytime I charge my phone , the percentage of charge will be higher (15% - 18% - 24% - 28% - 34% - 38%)

and now my phone shuts down at 38% and when I try to turn it on , it shows that my battery is dead and I need to put it in charger

that's the same reason of replacing my ex-battery

i'm afraid of this problem i think it's happening with me again

last time I replaced my battery was 2 weeks ago !!

pleeeaaase we need your help

I don't wanna replace it again

Iphone 5s IOS 8.4 (11 months old 😀 ) 32Gb

Amazingly I have the same problem with my iPhone 6s which I bought September 2015. I am running iOS 9.2. I have had this problem twice when I have been taking lots of photos with the native camera app. My battery level was somewhere between 40-50%. The first time my phone had this issue was in November when it was only 2 months old. It happened again yesterday. Having read these posts it sounds like it must be a battery issue rather than software as surely a software issue so old must have been resolved 2 years later? I live near an Apple Store so will call by and see what they say.

My iPhone 5 is good for one pic, if you are lucky. Just happened this morning, battery was at 53% took one pic, phone shut down. It would not restart until I plugged it into a charger. This has been happening ever since iOS7 upgrade. I have the latest iOS and nothing has changed in two years. I am a developer for Apple and I gotta say, they are more like crApple to me. My Motorola flip phone lasted for over 10 years with not one malfunction. I was happy to purchase an Apple product at first. I even learned to develop and have a few apps in the App Store. Now I see them for what they really are. A huge corp that only cares about prying every last dollar out of your wallet...and all for smoke and mirrors. They top Houdini with their powers of illusion.....and the populous eats it up for some reason. Steve Jobs left us....and so did Apples quality. RIP Steve. RIP Good Apple products.
