iPhone 5 IOS 7 battery dead when really at 29% after taking photos

My iPhone 5 (1 year old now) has started having a battery problem since I upgraded to IOS 7. It will shut itself off under these circumstances:

  • battery is below 40%
  • I take a number of photos using the Apple Camera app
  • photos taken in rapid sequence (no flash) or one or two taken with flash

The next thing I know I see the radar symbol and the phone shuts off. If I try to turn it on I get the drained battery icon with the power plug moving into the screen an it turns off.

I then plug it in to turn it on and find that the battery is still around 30%. If I am not near my charger, I can wait about a half hour and power the phone on. I just did that and the battery is at 29%.

What is going on? This is not right. I've never seen this before and have had 2 other iPhones. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

I just had this issue happen to me today on my almost 1 year-old iPhone 5 with 7.0.2 while watching video. I was surprised when it shutoff as I didn't recall seeing the warnings at 20% or 10% and it turned out when I plugged it back in that it was at 26% charged!

I also had the same issue for several times after iOS7.

iphone 4S running iOS7.0.3

I uasually can have the battery goes down to 1-2% if I do not use camera apps.

However, if I use a camera app, the iphone could shut itself down at 20%-30% battery life and can not reboot in 15mins or until plug it in a electrical source.

Honestly, THIS IS VERY ANNOYING.

Totally agree with with mariafal, the phone shouldn't need to be charged at more than 10% battery life.

Hope apple fix it ASAP.

UK iPhone 5 here.

iOS 7.0.3 and battery life is generally ok unless I touch the camera.

A couple of pictures especially with flash and whatever battery life I was showing matters not- phone shuts down and refuses to restart without charger.

I've had this phone since launch and it's been looked after.

I'm a bit annoyed with this, a solution would be most appreciated.

I'm having the same problem. iPhone 5, newest version of iOS 7, battery can die at 40% if I take a photo in any app, or use Maps in satellite view. If I don't take any pictures, my battery can sometimes go down to as low as 6% before shutdown-- a big difference, but still less than in iOS 6 where I would hit 1% before my phone shut off.

This is absolutely unacceptable.

I carry a battery pack around now because I don't want my phone to die on my morning commute (meaning no music, no camera, etc) and then have to charge it for a half hour once I get to work. I have seen the phone die at 60%!! And when I plug it back in , it comes right back up , showing 60% free.

There is no possible good reason for this behavior. It is appalling.

This is clearly a software bug, and if Apple does not fix it, I will be forced to buy a new phone. I cannot lose 2/3 of my battery life at random.

Same issue here. iPhone 5, only 10 months old. Shuts down and won't restart for a bit (unless connected to charger). This occurs with any battery percentage (did it at 100% yesterday, 80%, 32%, whatever). Been working with it for two weeks now (since upgrade). Even restored to new with no back-up last night with same results today. NO additional apps, no contacts, no email, no music, no NOTHIN' on this phone and it's still randomly shutting down. SO frustrating. Closest Apple store is 3 hours away for me too. If anyone finds a solution or speaks to a person at Apple, please let us know. Thanks!

Yes, the same thing has happened to me twice. I've managed to stop it happening by not using the camera! Both times I was using the camera with the battery at around 30% when the phone shut down without any low battery warning. The phone will not switch in until it is plugged in to a power source.

I have the original iphone, bought on the day of release, so just over a year old. I am running ios 7.0.3 but this glitch has occurred this and previous versions of ios.

This glitch needs to be fixed but I'm finding battery life in general to be a problem with the iphone 5 and ios 7. Unless I leave my phone untouched I don't even get a full day's use out of it. This was not an issue under ios 6. I have turned off all the bells and whistles of ios 7 so I am not really getting use of any of the "benefits".

I have been an iphone user since the 3G and I'm now getting rather disillusioned with the experience. Might take the plunge and try an Android or Windows phone next time. My iphone 5 is barely a year old and it is effectively unusable.

Has anyone had luck swapping their phone out for a new one? This sounds like a problem that can be solved with a software update, but if making an appointment at the Genius Bar and replacing my phone will solve the problem faster, I'm all for it. Just don't want to go through the trouble if the same problem will be there on the new phone, but I also don't want to wait around for Apple to solve the problem for us in a software update. 7.0.4 clearly didn't do the trick...

Same problem with me. I have a one year old UK iPhone 5. It wouldn't happen that much when I take photos but it will happen when I use the 3G. If my iphone is under 40% and I turn the 3G on then it goes down to 30% and it shuts down. When I plug it in, it starts charging from 30%. I rarely nowadays reach under 20%. I am with 7.0.2 and I didn't have this problem before ios7. I reaaaally hope there is a fix coming it is so annoying.

Just contacted support and had diagnostics ran on my phone. My battery was bad. Great I'm under warranty so I'll have it replaced for free. I have two problems with this though. First, it seems Apple has a defective component in the battery for these phones. I get a new defective battery and 6 months from now I'm in the same boat with NO warranty. Second, for those who didn't notice the problem till after the 1 yr warranty has passed... well you're out of luck because Apple wants $80 to fix their defective component. I'm a huge fan of Apple. Have been for 20+ yrs but they need to own up to this.
