clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

I'm sure Apple will fix this. I was about to return my iMac out of fear that something was wrong with the hardware. This proves that the problem is with software hence fixable.

So, I would stick to either a good sized SSD as my system drive.. if money wasn't of concern... or stick to the fast internal 7200rpm Mech HD and spend the extra money on a good Glyph External FW800 HD or two.. for my Audio work...

I would disagree with you on this TAOS. The FD is a brilliant idea and other than this audio problem I am amazed with how effective it is.

On my laptop I have an SSD and a mechanical disk. I'm constantly weighing the pros and cons of storing huge file A or mini app B on SSD or the mech drive. It's time consuming and a constant bother for me.

Then there's the issue with temporary files. Constant writing and deleting files on an SSD doesn't help its longevity. I find myself looking for settings on apps to route scratch areas to mech disk. I have a large mail archive. Should I store it on the SSD ? I guess not but this means moving ~/Library/Mail to the mech disk with symlinks which is a pain.

The FD does all this seamlessly. It just works.

I have got it working too with the external OS and logic etc. on a slow 5000rpm USB 2 HDD in a caddy. 320gb.

I have to be honest, while delighted and relieved. I'm really worried this a fusion drive/bus problem. I.e. Hardware and bit drivers/firmware issue. If it's hardware, that would mean it's permanently knackered.

Still planning on refund if I don't get an update. I'll rebuy when/if they can fix this.

Thanks for fix guys...really helps for now.

Hi all

Had call from pro app support today and was informed that they had all the info they need and that they have moved the calls for the attention of engineering and development. There was no timeline for a fix and he said it could be days or weeks or even months .. Not great news.

I called after sales as my 30 day is nearly up and all that could be resolved so far was

Replacement like for like ... No good if it has FD

Full refund

Upgrade to 27 with 7200 but at my cost which is a fair bit more cash as I have i7 21 inch

Or extend my period to return but this was subject to approval from managers at after sales and they said it was not a given.

Fairy miffed with this now although the phone support has been professional I am still at square one from the date of purchase.

I really like the fd speed and the machine but it just won't do the job as intended

Thanks

Hi all,

In lack of patience I took a bit of advice from several of you and bought myself a external HD (USB 3 with 500GB of space). The cheapest I found in Apple store downtown (ca 600 NOK).

Installed Maverix, Logic Pro X and latest Duet software on it and booted from it.

After a simple test with some MIDI drummer and a couple of guitar tracks I can confirm that this works just perfect.

Finally I can get back to work while waiting for Apple or FD HW guys to fix, what I guess is a software problem with the FD Hardware.

So after following this discussion from the start, the simple work around fix is to install OS and Logic on a seperat disk. Separat partion may work but I find this a bit -not worth it - cause I guess there will come a fix and then I have to go back again.. now I can just unplug my extra HD.

Good luck everyone and thanx for sharing knowlage, testing and work-arounds.

Thanx

You are welcome Al...

...and I want to add my own thanks to everyone here who has helped troubleshoot the issue and to those that reported back what has and has not worked for them.. This has helped me tremendously sorting out this issue with my own clients...

Thank you all for both your patience and your feedback...

Now.. we just wait for the fixes to come forth from both Apple and the AI Devs where applicable 🙂

Cheers..

Inkaroads,

That's what I want to know (and all I imagine)...I want to know they are going to fix it and when.

It's such a major fault for musicians/engineer/teachers.

Can I suggest we ALL continually phone apple support until they give us an answer?

I mean for real, actually right now register for a call back or whatever...phone up again....don't stele for thus wait and see stuff.

I'm off to do it again right now to try and get a tied down date or it's going to be multiple support calls from me till I do.

And I have till 4th/5th December to get a refund....imagine if we all pushed for a refund...might get something done or at least some real communication.

I'm off to arrange another call now.

Hi Wound,

I just got my third replacement last night. I havent even opened it up yet but I will today and it will have the same problem. I will set it up using the work around externial HD. Wait two weeks send back the old one and report the new one dosent work. They will go through there aprovals and look at the history of my file and then start the process over again and about 4 weeks from now I will be doing the same thing again untill i get a one after the fix has been released. That was the only way I was able to keep reseting my warrenty date. I offered to Apple if they could just reset the warrenty once a fix was released I would just hold onto the computer and wait but this is the way they wanted to do it.

If you have the time you might want to do the same. It's pretty easy to set up if your booting from a externial HD. And it buys you time while they figure out what to do.

Good Luck,

DeadPhish

P.S. I plan to keep on posting to this site to report the results of each computer each month. Hopefully not for long.

My god!

What a gear nightmare this is.

I spoke with Apple pro app and then back to main hardware.

They were not aware the fusion drive mavericks late 2013 iMac external audio cutout was a problem till I phoned again today!

It's now officially being investigated by Apple Ireland who will pass it on to the states I think.

They sent me a system profiler attachment that logged my osx and hardest info for the engineers I believe.

Seriously, they didn't seem to know about the specific external audio dropout. They seemed to only he aware of the pops and crackle issue. I confirmed to them the issue happens system wide...meaning not just in logic, it happens in iTunes, Safari...every where. Even while going into system preferences/sound/ alert sounds clicking on frog or any of them wil eventually stop working on external AI.

Glad they know now...but I thought others said they knew already, it's been a month and nobody hold them audio isn't Woking 95% of the time on new iMacs externally?

What the?

Nov 19, 2013 7:55 AM in response to Wound

Wound,

As has been said before.. the Customer Service Reps around the world..along with other support staff are not likely to know about this issue (Unless they have happened to have spoken to another user with it) because the main Apple Engineering dept has not yet issued a formal report on the problem... When they do so, it will appear on the CSR's computer database system... which is what they use to track/look up issues reported by customers..

Until the Engineering team issue the formal report however, it will not be available for CSRs to look up on their database systems.. which is why most won't know about...

What's important is the main Apple Engineering team in the US (who are responsible for such issues and fixes) are aware of the issue and are working on it.. and once they understand it fully along with it's cause and fixes.. they will issue the report to the Apple CSR database.

Its worth noting, this all takes time.. This is not a simple issue to fix i suspect and initially there was a lot of misinformation flying around and confusion because the same issue could be caused by out of date/incompatible drivers.. but now that has all be clarified and so as far as i have been made aware the Engineering team along with the OS X Dev team are working together to correctly fix this issue (without affecting anything else which is trickier than you may think) and once this is done then it has to be tested carefully before it is released upon the public... So personally Im not expecting a fix for at least a few more weeks at the earliest unless it proves to be a simple issue and somehow i don't think that will be the case but i could be wrong.

Nov 19, 2013 8:11 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

There is one other thing that probably needs to be said... and that is..

While it may seem obvious to us that it is a iMac and FD issue, simply because it only affects iMacs with FD fitted, it may not actually be so.

It could be a conflict in the CoreAudio software with the FD software.. It could be a Bus issue.. it could be a bug in another library routine somewhere in OS X that is causing a conflict with the software routine used by iMacs and FDs... and not the FD or it's software at all!

Until the Engineering Team fully look into this and identify the true cause and announce it.. no one else knows for sure one way or the other... and such investigations can and often do take some time.... to make sure they get it right.. without causing other issues with other parts of the hardware/software/OS X.

I know it's not what those with this issue want to hear but the reality is.. Patience is the key here and if you cannot be patient for whatever reasons.. (You need a working Mac and Logic now for example....) then return your iMac with a FD fitted and purchase something else.... or return it.. and wait until the problem is resolved and re-purchase your iMac with FD fitted then.. or keep hold of your iMac and use one of the workarounds until the fix is released...

Those are the options available...

Wanting to know when a fix will be released and basing any decsion on that basis... isn't an option at the moment because there won't be an answer to that... that anyone can give you at this time... because i doubt anyone knows a timeline at this stage. It's still too early in the process to be able for anyone to determine that timeframe with any certainty I'm sure.

Wound, I wouldn't keep my expectations too high on that. I have been exactly through the same process. Spoke to a senior advisor, they sent me exactly the the same app, sent them everything and a couple of days later the reply was... "There's nothing wrong with your mac. k. thanks bye"

Having said that, Apogee told me they were in contact with Apple (whom in Apple, I don't know).

So It's hard to believe that they don't know anything about this issue by now but anything is possible.
