clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Thanks a lot Deadphish really appreciate . Those sure lot cheaper . I will give that a try and report back on how that goes. After tracing the problem over the net it took me back to 2012 and now I wish I knew that before buying the imac :( what's the use make a powerful pc aimed at audio or video when installing the highest pecs if you know the market is not ready for 2013 was this a marketing hype that's how I feel now..

I have the same drop out problem / distortion / clicks pops with my late 2013 Imac 1tb Fd drive.

I've called apple care and they said they had no fix and acknowledged the growing problem based on searching forums thereselves. They didn't seem knowledgable on the issue nor gave me confidence it would be fixed. This *****. I have an apogee ensemble but even the internal sound clicks and pops. I have soundsticks via usb 2 and they really slow the internal drive down and cause problems as well. Apple fix this, please!

I was offered no replacement nothing.

Hello everybody,

Yesterday, I received my new iMac 27' (256 SSD). I used it a few hours with Apogee Duet 1 (Firewire with thunderbolt adaptor) and IT WORKS !!!

No issues when listening a song in iTunes, Youtube..., no issues when recording guitars and voices with GarageBand.

i'm not about to declare a victory, I'll make others tests today and in the coming days but I'm confident.

So, for those who have issues with Fusion Drive (I returned my first iMac with Fusion Drive) AND Firewire Duet, SSD (and I classic HD too, I read it on this thread) works fine.

Unfortunately, I know there is also issues with USB 3...

Been following this thread and others with this issue.

Latest here is that after a month of trying different things, I'm NOW able to use logic x, Kontakt, omnisphere and chrome with no pops and clicks. Mountain lion was unusable with the fusion drive in the new 2013 iMacs.

I had to split the fusion drive, rename the disks in terminal then do a clean install of 10.9 on the ssd and use the tb drive as the scratch disk.

Seems crazy I had to do that but I needed the machine to work.

hi guys,

I am having an another problem with my late 2013 iMac (with fusion drive). Apart from the distortion issue with the DAC, I am getting kernal panic while copying large files from a USB2.0 hard drive to the iMac. I was copying my iPhoto library (approx 450GB) via a USB2.0 drive, and the system just crashed after copied around 300GB. I tried that a few times and it always crashed. Then I tried copying a big folder of similar size from a USB3.0 drive to a thunderbolt drive (both connected to this iMac). It works fine. Is it also caused by the fusion drive software.....or it is another issue I have to deal with Apple? Anyone knows?

thIs new iMac is driving me nuts!.....(and unfortunately I miss the 14-days return period)

Danny,

That issue is likely to be caused by one of the known issues between a USB2 Ext HD going via a USB3 port... I'm guessing the USB2 HD is running on bus power and not a seperate power supply yes?

If so, use a powered USB2 hub to plug your USB2 drive into and then connect the hub to the USB3 port...or use a Powered Ext HD instead to resolve the issue..

If it's not that, what brand/model is your USB2 Ext HD and how is it formatted? (Fat32 or Mac Extended?)

Just got new iMac last week with 3TB fusion drive.

exactli the same issues with built-in audio and external interfaces.

finally found a solution. I had to split my fusion drive into two separate HDD and SSD drives. after doing that i had to reinstall operating system and all software but clipping sound no longer appears.

here's the link to splitting fusion drive article http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html

Pancenter,

That's an excellent, succinct summary of the current situation.

I am one of those who are waiting for a fix--no choice, really, since I am past the point of being able to return my computer.

As for recent developments, Apogee told me that I would be notified when the situation was resolved, but I just checked and they closed my support ticket a few days ago. Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports on whether Apple is actually working to repair the situation.

So, sorry to sound like a broken record (old-school reference there!), but does anyone know with certainty that Apple is working on this problem? One reason why I continue to ask is that, if Apple finally just shrugs their shoulders and says, "sorry, there's nothing we can do", then how will we even know? This thread is the closest thing to a centralized, frequently updated forum devoted to this problem that I know (and it shouldn't be).

"Where?"

In this thread. Many report that Apple support seems to know little about the problem.

"Yes".

You've been very helpful and knowledgeable to date, so I'll take your word for it. I hope that you are right!

Also, you may have missed my last-minute edit, above, where I write, "One reason why I continue to ask is that, if Apple finally just shrugs their shoulders and says, 'sorry, there's nothing we can do', then how will we even know? This thread is the closest thing to a centralized, frequently updated forum devoted to this problem that I know (and it shouldn't be)."

Thanks again for continuing to keep the thread up to date.

Ah.. but thats not the US Engineering team they are speaking with.. Just uninformed CSRs who wouldn't know anyhow.. especially earlier on... and as time is passing, as the various posts here indicate, more and more CSRs and other ETs, are becoming much more aware of this issue.

"One reason why I continue to ask is that, if Apple finally just shrugs their shoulders and says, 'sorry, there's nothing we can do', then how will we even know?

You will know because it will get reported here and elsewhere.. by those in touch with the Teams working on the fix. However, I will tell you that currently this is getting a lot of attention internally at Apple because of the issues this is causing with other applications/OS X and not just Logic. You have to remember the 2013 iMac FD issue affects ALL audio be it internal or external.. and every app that uses audio in any way.. including iTunes etc..and that's quite a major problem...

The issue in terms of information and getting it out to the general public... is that those that do know how the work on the fix is going, cannot say.. because of the various NDA's they are wrapped up in legally with Apple in regards to testing.. and those that don't know.. don't know.. 🙂

So.. in summary, work is being done and a fix will be released. The only unknown is when the fix will be ready and released.. and not if...
