clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

HI Art of sound and thanks for your input sorry If I sounded targeting my anger towards you not the case at all.

In regards to the audio inetrface argument , I dont think Audio Kontrol from native instrument is a cheaper interface at all as all reviews online give it very high rating . I have done extensive research and couldnt find one sound card that is compatatible with USB .

Can you please clarify if any of the Motu , or M Audio, or Roland sound cards working without an issue through USB on new Imacs tested and confirmed? I am asking because I would buy one if thats the case.

The only one that seems to be working is the Apogee but I personally dont want it.

thanks

Pancenter yes I bought a powered USB hub and it did not work for me , same results pops and clicks.

I cant raise the sample bufer in ableton higher than 69 , and if I do I get the clikcs and pops ... My midi audfi utility settings have to remian high in the 89000 to get it to work across the machine platforms but at that rate it distorts the sounds in Abelton .

I have to admit the driver of my sound card is buggy but again its not the case when being used on a USB 2 machine.

Organik76,

I used a Motu Ultralite Mk3 Hybrid earlier this week via its USB2 with my iMac with USB3 ports.. (and no FD) and I had no issues at all using the latest Motu drivers with Mavericks,..

However, given it also has a FW connection, I normally use that instead because of the lower overheads placed on the CPU compared to USB2/3 but I tested out the USB2 connection just to see and as i said, i have no issues...

I have to say the Audio Kontrol was a cheap'ish product... built to a low price.. using fairly cheap components... Of course, its also discontinued now... but hopefully NI will continue supporting it in the future (for a while at least) but so far the only statement from them was as folows (in case you missed it..)

Mavericks 10.9 compatibility - An issue has been found involving NI non class-compliant audio interfaces (eg. Audio 4, Audio 8, S4 MK1, Audio Kontrol 1): If such an NI audio interface is connected to a computer waking up from Sleep mode, the device will invariably produce chopped and distorted audio on both Input and Output connections or no audio at all. To resolve the issue please disconnect and reconnect the device to your computer or change a setting of the audio interface - e.g. switching the samplerate. Native Instruments is currently conducting further systematic compatibility and performance tests with the release version of Mavericks, and will provide new information on this page as it becomes available.

This is a good example however, of why I buy Motu products... because my original Motu Ultralite Mk1 is almost 9 years old now.. and it still works great with Mavericks... being fully supported in every driver / OS X update since I bought it.. The same applies to my 6 year old Ultralite Mk2 and I suspect, the same will apply with the Ultralite Mk3 Hybrid I bought recently....

They also all have a FW connection which I have found that connection to be far more stable and efficient than any of the other USB2 connected devices I have tried/tested over the years...

This is one of those cases where you really do tend to get what you pay for.... and as I have mentioned a few times in the past.. Spending $200 on an Audio/Midi interface.. and using it with a $2/3000 Mac + Software setup is much akin to buying a Ferrari and fitting $100 tires to it.. They might be tires and they may all look much the same but you won't get the same performance out of them compared to the high performance tires costing 2-3 times as much...

edit

Note that this is a FW 800 adaptor.. you may still need a FW800-FW400 cable or adaptor

also note that whilst the TB-FW adaptor does support bus-power, it only supplies 7W (?) which might not be enough for some devices. A MOTU Ultralite works fine

Hi folks. Spent a few days reading these threads while I've been troubleshooting my own version of the same thing. Have a new iMac late 2013, 3tb fd, and lots of problems with audio. My Steinberg UR824 USB2 interface chokes all audio completely when it's active. When I first got the machine, I was walked through a process of a clean Mavericks install, then I loaded the steinberg driver, produced the issue, unloaded the driver, it went away. So the tech blamed the Steinberg driver, and at that time I noticed that Steinberg posted a notice about incompatibility so I figured, ok they'll update. (If I had seen this thread, I'd have returned the machine while I still could. This *****.)

Next, Steinberg did update with a "Mavericks compatible" driver, and the problem is still there, and a couple of people on their forums are reporting similar behavior.

A few oddities in my setup / notes:

1. Booting off an external drive has not worked for me. Alas.

2. I have a POD500 USB driver that is working. So my workaround for the moment is to route the Pod to the UR824 inputs, at least letting me playback through my monitors. (But what a nuisance.)

3. My iMac is spontaneously rebooting itself at least once a day with errors largely pointing at IOUSB class libraries.

4. I tried all combinations of direct to port connections, USB3 hubs, and USB2 hubs with no differences in the behaviors.

I opened another case yesterday, and the tech noted that the "sr engineer" on the first case had noted that it may be related to the fusion drive. Which gives me hope that behind the wall of impentrable secrecy at Apple, maybe they really are working on this.

But in the meantime, my $3k audio workstation can't play an .mp3.

This is the worst experience I've had with OSX and Apple hardware since I first switched in the mid 90s. Reading through this thread, at least I know I'm not entirely alone dealing with this.

Thanks

Hi NoelEiffe,

I'm also booting of a externial HD and sometimes its stable and then sometimes it will just freeze after working for two days. Then it will take two or three attempts to restart it and it may freeze a couple more times that same day then be ok for a day or two then do it again. Also sometimes I will be looking at the screen reading my email and a message will pop up on the screen saying your computer restarted because of a problem but the computer never restarted the message just came up. I'm booting of of a 2TB Seagate backup plus with a USB3 connection. I first tried booting from the same drive with the thunderbolt connection but It seemed like it was alot more unstable, alot more freezes and seemed like the computer would work alot slower. So I switched it to the USB3. I do have trouble starting up my computer with the USB drive. I have three externial drives plugged into the computer. All Seagate's, two are hooked up with a Thunderbolt connection and the boot drive on the USB3. When I go to startup the machine turns on but the screen just stays black. I have to poke it in the eye and then try again one or two more times before it takes. I think it is looking at the Thunderbolt drives first for info or something like that because when the screen just stays black I can see the power light indicators turned on on my Thunderbolt drives but not the USB3 drive but when it does take the USB3 drive lights up right away?

As for AI I have had no problems using a cheap firewire Presonus Inspire and a USB2 Apogee Jam. I know the Inspire is a cheap interface and probably does't give the best results, but it is another example of Firewire working. I know the Apogee Jam is USB2 and thats working but it is fairly new.

Since this has been going on I have been looking for any sign of it in reviews of late 2013 imacs with fusion drives. Iv'e read several reviews were they test everything and say how great it is. These were not audio reviews mind you but a couple were talking about the gaming experience on the new imac and how great it looked sounded and performed. I understand how it could look good and perform good but shouldn't they have experienced the Snap, Crackle, Pop in the game? I'm not a gamer so I'm not sure. I'm just assuming because it shows up in any other audio I try to play booting off of the fusion drive.

Thats my experiences over the last couple weeks. This is my third replacement (I started this thread) and I am expecting another one next week except I ordered the forth with a 1TB SSD instead of the fusion drive. I will report back my results as soon as I get it and give it a test run.

The Apple rep I am working with has taken back my last two machines for me and they went straight to engineering. She said they needed to collect up 75 of them to run tests. So from what I have been told U.S. engineering is well aware of the problem / problems and is working on them.

Thanks to everybody that has posted on this thread It has helped me out immensly. Special thanks to Art of Sound and Panceter who have been very active and helpful with there responses.

Ugh. 4 machines! Doubtless that involves a lot of re-authorization calls to plugin manufacturers and DRM'd software companies.

Just out of curiosity, one other behavior I've noticed is that USB drives are randomly disconnecting and then reconnecting during the day. We ran hardware diagnostics on the machine yesterday and found no specific hardware issues detectable, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this too, as it would seem at least possibly to be related.

4 Machines. Wow. Do you think I should push to have it replaced? Before I do, I'm interested to hear whether the non-fusion drive solves problems for you though, so please do keep us posted.

And like you, I do appreciate the detail folks have posted here -- yourself included of course, and everyone.

Hope springs eternal, I guess. Perhaps I should have just bought a refurb'd Mac Pro after all to replace my 2006 Mac Pro, easily the most reliable, best computer I've ever owned (and still in service as a Lion Server file server with all my sample libs and such loaded on its drives).

Yes hours and hours of calls to Apple.

You mentioned the USB drives randomly disconnecting. I'm booting of of USB drive and like I said every once and a while that message will pop up your computer was restarted because of a problem but the computer never restarted. And the random freeze ups. I suppose if the USB drive is randomly disconnecting it could cause those problems. I have my power settings set not to put HardDrives asleep.

As for your question about pushing for a replacement. I say push and keep pushing. I was told No at least 5 times for every Yes I got. But persistance pays off if you have the time, alot of it.

The first CSR you get when you call Apple will most likely not be able to help you. Just be polite and tell them you appreciate everything they have tried to help you with but can you please speak to a supervisor. They will tell you they wont be able to do anything other than what they just told you. Tell them you understand but may you please speak to one. I've never been turned down. And they can do more for you than the first CSR. You may have to keep climbing the chain to get what you paid for.

Good Luck and I will report back,

DeadPhish
