clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

Alright... waiting for a reply on my support ticket. In the meantime, I'm sceptical about this being a USB 3.0 compatibility issue and here is why;

I now have the Maestro software completely uninstalled, but my Quartet unit is connected directly to the iMac. A moment ago I found out that you actually can activate phantom power and change modes right on the front panel just holding it in. So, essentially everything on the quartet is functioning flawlessly. No crackling, no audio drops, nothing wierd. The ONLY thing missing is the low-latency mixer.

So this just HAS to be a plain Maestro software version issue, and something that can be addressed with an update from apogee. Am I totally off with this conclusion?

Sounds kind of encouraging. Have new SSD only Mac coming tomorrow and am using quartet, so will try it out.

I would be very grateful if those who replace their Fusion iMacs with SSD iMacs would report back on whether that has solved their problem. Thanks.

I'm submitting this in case it helps us all to get a bigger picture of the situation. I upgraded the internal drive on my MBP 2.5GHz (November 2011) with a 1TB Seagate Hybrid drive. Since upgrading to Maverick I seem to be getting a kernal panic restart daily.Oddly, it has never happened while I was at the computer. I turn down the screen brightness to black when I'm away for any great length of time. When I return, it is in the login screen and upon logging in, it reports that the machine has restarted due to a kernal panic.

I have ordered a Disk Doubler from OWC with a 240GB SSD and a 1TB 7200rpm disk drive. The Disk Doubler allows you to replace the optical drive with a second hard drive. Wish me luck. °͜°

I replaced my fusion drive iMac with SSD and it solves all issues I had before with Duet Firewire and Pod UX2 (usb).

No more distorsion, cuts of sound...nothing, it works perfectly and, finally, I can't do music ! The only thing is that I loose 750 GB of storage but with an external DD, it's perfect.

I don't know but really hope that SSD is the solution for majority of unfortunate musicians...

Were those of you that got a replacement all within the 15-day return period? Has anyone outside of that window convinced Apple to replace their machines? And in that case, did they give you a refund and then allow you to order another BTO iMac?

Just bought iMac 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, 16GB 1600 MHZ DDR3, Fusion drive

Getting nasty static, random pops.

Fun times...First, I tried to hook up my MOTU 8pre (Firewire) with a Thunderbolt adapter, then find out it is not supported my MOTU.

Then, hooked up my old Mbox, and starting getting the popping sounds.

Decided I needed a new box...Focusrite Scarlett 18i8. Same pops and static.

tempted to return EVERYTHING...I got this computer specifically for recording...

Its the Fusion Drive issue.... which affects all types of Audio Interfaces (FW and USB) as well as Internal Audio...

Either..

1) Create a bootable OS X external Disk, Boot from that and then install Logic on it.... and use that for Logic/Any Audio work..for the time being.. until a fix is released by Apple for this issue. Make sure you do not access any data on the FD drive after booting from the external drive otherwise the issue will reappear. until you restart your Mac and reboot from the EXT drive.. You can however, boot from the FD when not doing Audio related work.

2) Split your Fusion drive into an SSD and a Mech drive (again for the time being) and then reassemble the FD after the fix has been issued.

3) Return your iMac for one with an SSD or mech drive inside (if you still can..)

4) Do nothing and wait until Apple releases a fix for the problem... though there is no official ETA for any such fix...

Additional: Any USB2 Interface connected to a USB3 port may also have issues due to the USB2 > USB3 problem with newer Macs.. This issue requires updates from the Manufacturer of the Interface to fix the problem..

Note: I run several different Motu interfaces with my 2013 iMac that doesn't have an FD fitted... using the FW to TBolt adapter with the latest Motu drivers and Mavericks.. and I have had no issues.... (Though admittedly I haven't tried an 8Pre this way but I don't see why that would have a specific issue as they all use the same drivers..) Who told you it was not supported?

Rolling back to ML doesn't seem to fix the FD issue... Many people have reported the issue under ML (or any OS for that matter.. as someone tried Lion but that OS doesn't support the FD anyhow so they had other issues that prevented proper testing) as well as under Mav unfortunately.... I have not come across anyone who stated that rolling back to ML fixed the FD issue for them.

Rolling back to ML can fix the USB2/USB3 issue however if their Interface has updated ML drivers to address this issue.. These updated ML drivers do not always work with Mav however, hence the problem continuing... once they update to Mav...

Confusing I know.. but the two issues often get mixed up... because they result in similar symptoms.. and of course some people (if they own both a USB2 interface and an 2103 iMac with FD) can have both issues which adds to the confusion...

Thanks, really appreciate the clarification. I wonder how related the issue reported in this thread and the one reported in this other thread are? Because in the latter thread, a lot of folks are saying that they didn't have the issue in ML, but do in Mavericks. One guy replaced his iMac not once, but twice. Each time the new iMac arrived with ML pre-installed, and his USB audio devices worked fine. As soon as he upgraded to Mavericks, they broke.

When you say the "USB2/USB3 issue", are you referring to the problems folks like me are having with USB headsets and microphones (not audio controllers)? If so, would you assume that downgrading to ML would help if the mics/headsets in question don't have 3rd party drivers, and are meant to be "plug n play" with Apple?

Any USB2 device plugged into a USB3 port can possiblly have issues under Mavericks and formerly under ML.. though many of those issues under ML were fixed by the Devs of the USB2 devices only to 'break' again under Mav.. so yes, to fix the USB2/3 issue with USB2 devices, rolling back to ML can sometimes fix them.... depending on the device and if it was 'fixed' to work or worked okay under ML in the first place...

Note: Not every USB2 device had issues when plugged into a USB3 port.... be it under ML or Mav for that matter.. Some were designed correctly in the first place and so didn't have any issues at all.. It's only those devices which didn't follow the original design specs for USB2 but took advantage of some 'loopholes' or 'tricks' regarding the USB2 design spec to utilize for example.. more power from the USB2 port than was recommended/specified in the specs.. to get the devices to work better/correctly/able to work using cheaper components..... now have issues when used with a USB3 port because the USB3 design spec closed down a few of those 'loopholes' and stopped the 'tricks' working correctly...

Oh.. it's also worth noting that many of the same USB2 decives that have issues with Apple and ML/Mav...also have similar issues under Win 8 ..... when used with a PC which only has USB3 ports....

The Devs of these probmatic USB2 devices used certain routines in ML... in a 'unique' way that they were not really designed to be used for... to fix the problem.. but those routines were changed in Mav hence the issues rearing it's ugly head once more... They did the same with Win7 and the same issue occurs with Win 8 for much the same reasons...

No....

For the USB2/3 issue... the fix has to come from the Devs of the USB2 Device and not from Apple.... to work correctly under Mav.... as it is an issue caused by the Device and not anything to do with Apple or Mavericks... as odd as that might seem. (See my last post)

For the separate FD issue however, yes, the fix has to come from Apple...
