clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Hi, did not read all of your conversation and maybe I am boring you, but I really have the same problem with my APOGEE-Ensemble and made all thinkable troubleshooting you can think of. I am pretty sure it is not an HW- or configuration problem as I had this problem with my DUET Firewire and the ENSEMBLE, on different iMACS (bought for this reason a complete new iMAC :-( ) with- or without loaded Maestro, on complete new installations with SL and MAVERICKS !!. And if you try to play musik with the build in mediabrowser out of LP-X, you will recognice the same issue after a couple of minutes. (sometimes it takes 20 minutes before it appears the 1st time)

Workaround at least for me was, to set the soundsettings in Mevericks to internal (only the output) and connected a fiber between the optical out of the imac and optical in of the ensemble, configured an AUX input channel on that and now, no clicks, no clippings or other strange things on the audio output. Should not be the solution, but as workaround it is ok.

So, Apple and Apogee! Would be great if you could get this issue solved!

Btw: NO problem if I connect a PRESONUS- FIRETUBE instead of APOGEE! This works fine, If you are interested in the thread I opened: "Logic Pro X and APOGEE Ensemble/Duet"

AND: Sorry about my bad english!

It also sounds similar to several people who've posted regaring problems with the Maestro software, I'm thinking they don't have all the Maverick kinks worked out yet.

Yes.. +1.. and that's part of the overall issue here.. that all these various causes, produce similar symptoms resulting in a general confusion over which one (or combinations of) is the root cause... in each case.

Heck.... some people could have three or more causes...in certain situations!

OK, now I'm really starting to lose patience. Last night I cloned off my FD to a USB3 3TB bootable disk, used the macworld instructions to split the drive, installed OSX on the mech partition as instructed, then tried to boot off the USB drive.

I'd seen this before doing this, but the **** machine will not boot off the usb drive. It shows the drive in an option-boot, I can select it, but then it cranks for about a minute then shuts off the drive. (

It's not the drive. I can boot off it on my laptop. It's the freaking USB bus on this lousy machine. So now I can't get my stuff back on the machine.

This machine is a disaster. Opening a new case today and demanding a new machine.

but on my iMac it tries to boot it, then shuts the drive off.

Sorry, but can you give a bit more detail as to what you mean by this statement?

For example, when does it shut the drive off? At what point in the boot process?

I'm booting off an external HD with a 2013 iMac via the USB3 ports without any issue here... and others haven't reported any issues either in doing so... so i suspect something else is going on..

What is the brand and model of your external HD?

I suppose your external HDD is USB 3? Did you try using a USB 2 cable, extension cable or USB 2 hub to 'dumb the connection down' to USB 2. I had the same problem (and still have): can use my USB 3 disks without a problem except if I want to boot from them. That only seems to work over USB 2.

My disks are LaCie btw, their support couldn't help me but it's prob an incompatibility between their firewire and the USB 3 on the iMac.

Hi Guys,

I was booting off a externial drive before I received a replacement Two days ago with a SSD instead of the fusion drive. It was far from a perfect solution for me. It worked but I did have some trouble starting up the computer sometimes. I didn't clone the drive though. I just downloaded the Mavericks installer and installed it onto my externial drive and then chose to boot off of that drive with option held down for the first time.

I'm booting of of USB drive and like I said every once and a while that message will pop up your computer was restarted because of a problem but the computer never restarted. And the random freeze ups. I suppose if the USB drive is randomly disconnecting it could cause those problems. I have my power settings set not to put HardDrives asleep. Also 90% of the time the drive would not boot on the first try it would just spin. I would have to poke the mac in the eye and try again some times two or three times but it would get going eventually. Then it would be stable for anywhere from 10 minutes to two days. (most of the time a day or two).

I Have been using the the SSD iMac now for a day and a half with now with no visible problems yet. I am only using a very cheap FW Presonus Inspire AI and a USB2 Apogee Jam.

Good luck to all,

DeadPhish

Funny...I tried it direct to iMac, and through 2 different USB3 hubs, but I didn't think to try booting off a USB2 hub. I'll give that a shot when I get home.

Something tells me that is likely to work.

Otoh, that doesn't fill me with confidence about the USB tech on this iMac at all, but let's see if it works.

Thanks for the suggestion...

in my last post, pls read 'firewire' as 'firmware', don't know why that was autocorrected :-)

Had a lengthy discussion with LaCie support and my conclusion was definitely it was the LaCie implementation that is giving these boot problems. USB 2 works though it's slower of course. I only use these disks as backups and I can create the backups over USB 3, so it's less of a problem that I can only boot from them over a USB 2 connection.

I would love to hear if others can boot over USB 3 and what brand though, since I would feel uncomfortable buying LaCie USB 3 again for use with my Mac.
