clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Hi Art of Sound need your help please .I got the motu lite hybrid and plugged the FireWire . Trying to instal update driver but I get a message can not detect device make sure usb is connected . I connected the usb to install but it won't turn on . I did some research it says usb must have a power adapter plugged ? I couldn't find a power adapter in the box is this something additional I have to get ? If so which power adapter should I ask for ? I was hoping for a plug and play but it seems I am not there yet :( thanks

Hi Organik,

You should be able to use Firewire without any issue... That is what i am using here with my Hybrid. I also got the power supply with my Ultralite so not sure why yours is missing.. Mine came in the box with the interface. I have mine on power supply all the time anyhow.. even though it is not needed when connected via FW.... and it works perfectly.

I simply took my hybrid out of the box... connected my Hybrid via FW to a FW port using the cable provided... (or via the FW to TBolt adaptor for Macs I have that don't have a FW port)... connected up the power supply... turned the hybrid on...and then installed the latest drivers and it all installed without issue so not sure why you had any problems...

I have only used the USB2 connection for testing purposes.. but yes, if you are going to use the USB2 connection (though I wouldn't recommend this as the FW is much better) you will need to use the Power Supply that should have come with it...

If you didn't get a power supply and you bought it new.. I would contact the place you bought it from and complain.... (Unless for some odd reason they no longer include the power supply with new Ultralites but I got my latest one a few weeks ago and mine came with a Power Supply so, if that is no longer so, its a very recent change)

When you tried to install the latest drivers.. and connected via FW... did you make sure the Ultralite was turned on? (The front panel should be lit up)

Hope this helps... and if not, please contact Motu's tech support directly.. They are always very helpful and prompt in handling any issues I've found...

Isn't there a way to download updated driver without the usb by using he firewire it won't let me won't detect and would pop that annoying message box any advice ? Am contacting motu at same time..

Yes, contact Motu as that isn't what happened with mine.. I didn't need to connect via USB2 when I installed the latest drivers from the website... I just left it connected via Firewire so Im not sure why it is telling you that you need to use USB.... Odd!

Did you install the version that came on the CD with it first? Did you update using the website's latest update version which is the Universal Audio Installer found here?

Mac

Im wondering if the difference was i already had some older drivers already installed for my Mk2 FW.......

Anyhow... hopefully Motu will help you sort this out...

BHphotovideo are a pretty good store (with good prices too!) so Im sure they will help you with the missing PS.... if indeed they still include it with the Hybrid version... The user guide and the Motu website says they do....

Here is the bit from the Motu website summary page.... for the Ultralite Hybrid Mk3

Bus-powered FireWire operation. No need for external power when operating as a FireWire interface connected to a computer. A power supply is included for stand-alone operation.

A.O.S./Nigel -- thanks for all your insight and info throughout the thread. Much appreciated. You're a good communicator and generous with your time. I wish YOU were in charge of support policies at Apple!

Two questions if you wouldn't mind answering.

1) How confident would you be at this point re: an iMAC with 3tb regular 7200 drive -- to be used with an old MOTU 828mkII interface -- and having NO audio problems?

2) Re: USB 3.0 backward compatibility problems (for other peripherals, e.g. USB 2.0 external drives.). I understand that the powered hub MAY solve it. But I assume it would have to be a 2.0 powered hub and NOT a USB 3.0 powered hub. Is that correct?

For those of you that have solved this problem, either by partioning, external drive or getting non-FD models -- and are using LOGIC X: would you be willing to see if it works at low buffer size (64 or below) without glitching? Because that has been a related problem reported at LogicProHelp. Thanks!

For those interested in someone actually taking a step to try to create pressure on Apple to "go public" re all this.

I don't know if his/her suggestions would do any good, but I, for one, applaud his/her motives and gumption. I remain outraged that Apple continues to market/sell this product to unsuspecting audio users without a disclaimer and without making all their CS and Sales reps aware of it.

Hi LogicL1,

Thank you for your kind comments.... Much appreciated!

How confident would you be at this point re: an iMAC with 3tb regular 7200 drive -- to be used with an old MOTU 828mkII interface -- and having NO audio problems?

I have exactly that same 2013 iMac setup here.... and I have had no issues at all audio wise using the latest Motu drivers...with any of my Motu gear... including a 828 mkII that i was using a couple of weeks ago, to test for a client..

USB 3.0 backward compatibility problems (for other peripherals, e.g. USB 2.0 external drives.). I understand that the powered hub MAY solve it. But I assume it would have to be a 2.0 powered hub and NOT a USB 3.0 powered hub. Is that correct?

If anything will fix it a powered USB2.0 hub should do it but there are no absolutes with this workaround.. as some people have found certain USB devices just won't work, period.. Worth a try though given the low price you can get powered USB2 hubs these days off of, say Amazon...where, If it doesn't work you can always return it.

Fingers crossed!

It's plugged through fw but without the power adaptor . The card will work for a minute then loud squeal then card turns off. I couldn't download the firmware update because asking me off usb " power adapter missing " am surprised why I cant download firmware update with FW . I wonder if firmware update will solve the squeal problem . Am trying to communicate with mutu but taking forever back and forth . Do you think if I buy a an adapter 12 watts from electronic store would work ? Or is the adapter pin special as I realizes it's a bit larger the the phone charger pin ... Total mess at the moments started its a problem two weeks ago with usb3 I ended up in this mess where I am right now :(

Dec 13, 2013 6:54 AM in response to Organik76

Oh.. Yes, the firmware update is essential.... and no, it won't do it unless it is connected to a PS.. so that makes sense...

I don't know if that will resolve the issue of the squeal though.. never came acros that here...

What have Motu said? Did you chat to them in real time or did you email them? (I always use the realtime chat with them.. via their support page)

OK folks, an update on my personal odyssey, for the reord:

1. Was able to boot off my Seagate external by going through a USB2 hub. I can "use" the drive in USB3 mode, but can't boot off it.

2. Split my fusion drive. Installed my old image to the mechanical segment, completely ignoring the SSD.

3. Back in action on the drive, I tried here are the results with 2 different audio interfaces:

a. Motu Ultralite (1st gen) over FW400-to-Tbolt adapter: works.

b. Steinberg UR824 to USB3 or USB3 hub: does not work. 2.

c. Steinberg UR824 through USB2 hub: appears to be working, but I'll do a bit more testing.

Yeesh. Oh, and on my new install, pretty much everything needs reauthorization, and I've used up my Microsoft authorizations, so they won't allow me now to use the software licenses I've purchased, at least until an escalation team gets back to me in 24-48 hours. Plus, then it will fail again when (or if I guess) I switch back to the Fusion setup. (Assuming I can live partition it...).

Thanks, Apple.

Organik,

I just finished an online install of an Ultralite Hybrid with a client of mine and no issues at all.

This is what 'we' did...

Ultralite Hybrid (which came from Sweetwater and did include a PS) connected to 2013 iMac with SSD via FW plus Mavericks and LPX (latest versions)

Installed all software from CD

Shut down iMac

Turned on Hybrid powered by PS and rebooted iMac

Installed all updates from Motu website. (No Firmware update was needed as Hybrid came with current firmware preinstalled)

Shut down and restarted iMac leaving Hybrid on.

Hybrid working fine, no squeals or any other issues after testing in LPX for an hour this AM.

I spoke to motu over the phone and went over the situation with the tech support , he said that the new iMacs have a communication problem with the audio sound cards and that I should wait for the power adapter to isolate the problem and see if it's firewire. Not the news I wanted to hear as I lost more money replacing the card and now not sure if it is even going to work :(
