clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Hey all,

I would like to add an update about my situation. I have a late 2013 27" Imac w 256 gb SSD drive and an apogee Duet (USB2). I Had the dropping out issue when using Logic X or Itunes, basically any audio function. I was going to purchase a Caldigit thunderbolt hub to remedy the USB problem. Before doing that I deleted the maestro software that came with the Duet and noticed no more sound drop outs. The situation has been running smooth for a few days now without any dropouts or sound issues. I'm going to try recording some bass and guitar and see if that goes well.

Those who have a Duet or another apogee device that is USB2 might want to try deleting the maestro software and see if it works. It has been working fine for the past few days. If anything changes I'll make sure to share it here. Good Luck.... It's great to do music...Finally!

Hey hey,

Same thing. I'm getting pops and clicks in audio randomly with Duet 2. I just

installed it last night for the first time with a brand new Late 2013 iMac 27". I never had any problems like this with my old M-audio Interface. At first I thought it was an Ableton Buffer size issue but I have also getting the pop sounds in iTunes/Youtube too. Just listening to music and browsing the internet causes the same thing.

I took a little video of it:

clicking.mov

From what I've read it seems to be a combination of issues. New iMac, Apogree, Fusion Drive, USB 3. Ugh. And I really love this speedy computer and the Duet but man. Very frustrating first week with all this new gear.

Hi Guys

I've been testing my late 2013 iMac with SSD with a USB2 Apogee Jam with no problems it's just a $99 interface made really for the iphone or ipad but comes with a USB2 adapter.

I've also been using a cheap FW Presonus Inspire 1394 and having no problems with or without the drivers.

I'm simply a amature so my test may not be as extensive as others.

Good Luck to all,

Hi Panceter,

I just relized what you ment from a coment you posted in response to my AI (Presonus Inspire). Back on Oct 27th.

I can think of a simple test you can try with both interfaces. BTW, I'm surprised the Inspire still works in Mavericks.

If I go to the Presonus website it list the device as not supported by Mavericks.

Not Supported in Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and later versions of OSX:

FireStudio (2626)

FireBox

FirePod

FP10

Inspire

Inspire GT

FireStation

V-Fire

But it seems to work fine. Is it possible for the device to not be suported and still work? I only do this as a hobby so I usually dont record more than two or three tracks at a time. BTW i have dropped the fusion drive for a SSD and am using a late 2013 27" imac.

I am in the market for a new interface and since reading other peoples input on this page Motu seems to be very popular. I have been to there website and read many reviews. I have a budget of between 5 and 6 hundred for a new interface and am trying to decide what one would be best for me. I have been looking at the Ultra light mk3 and the Motu 16 and trying to decide what would be best for me.

Or if my Inspire keeps working try and hold out as long as I can for a new interface that hooks up via Thunderbolt or USB3.

Was just curios to see what you or others thoughts on the matter might be.

Thankyou for advance for any advice you may have,

DeadPhish

When a company uses the term "not supported" it does not necessarily mean the product won't work but means if there are problems, the company will not provide support or updated software/drivers.

As far as MOTU goes, they are a -solid- company with a history and reputation of creating excellent hardware and software. They consistently write the best drivers and know how to get the best performance out of the hardware, including the host computer. The only other hardware/drivers in their league are from RME. That said, I don't think RME is as consistent as MOTU.

Apogee has excellent hardware but support has been spotty as of late.

Yes, I have to say I was so lucky someone turned me on to Motu products many years ago.... I have never regretted one purchase from them and I have bought a fair few for myself (and on behalf of my clients) over the years...

I have to say though, I was also impressed with Michael from Focusrite, coming here, owning up to problems with their current drivers and 10.9... and letting us know that the company will be devoting more resources to development work to try and ensure their drivers are already 'ready to go' with future OS X updates... as such companies as Motu do already....

If only more Reps from such companies did the same.... and gave such direct feedback here and elsewhere!

Abyhow.... Glad to hear things are all working for you now, (So far at least!) Deadphish....

Thanks for keeping us all updated!

Cheers..

Actually the Inspire isn't a bad little box, I have one as well. I used it on an old PC laptop as a small portable device to stereo record choirs at schools around town. Recrded very well using The only bad thing is the headphone output is terrible.

You have to use the mains out to a mixer to get an accurate representation of the sound. Headphone oou is ok for monitoring at the gig but that's about it.

Yes, Michael has been on this Forum for quite a while and always provides support and honest straight forward replies. I shouldn't have left Focusrite out, it's probably because I think of them as relative newcomers to the audio/interface field. I've used their standalone hardware Mic preamps in several studios for many years but never thought of them producing budget interfaces. Of course the problem with a budget interface is not in the mic preamps but in the inexpensive USB/Firewire interface the units use to communicate... there's very few to choose from if you're going to keep the price down and that's why you see a lot of the inexpensive models with the same problems.

p.s. Apple is not using top of the line chips anymore either so that doesn't help the problem. Anyone wonder why the Texas Instruments Firewire chips and USB hardware is still recommended by audio interface manufacturers.

Hi again guys,

As all of you I've got audio issues with external USB Audio Interfaces (no problems with internal audio).

I got a late 2013 iMac 27" with Fusion Drive plus an RME Fireface UCX and even for me was impossible to work with any software.

But some days ago I read on another forum that some guys have solved with a USB Hub... so yesterday I tried a new USB 3 hub from Anker (AK-68ANHUB-B10EA) and it seems to solve the problem (at least for me).

Till yesterday I can't play 3-4 minutes without hering crackles or noises.

Now, tested 2-3 hours continuosly. External audio works PERFECTLY.

I don't know if this HUB will solve ALL the issues, but for sure it worked for me.

Anyway, I hope Apple will fix it soon for everybody.
(sorry for my bad english!)

south,

What type of hub? USB2 or USB3?

Most people have found a USB2 hub works bets.. though a few USB3 hubs have solved the issue too... but a Powered USB2 seems to work best..

Note: Changing the USB3 port you have plugged your hub into... can alter things too.. (Remember to reboot after changing ports) as does whatever else you have plugged into the USB3 ports.. at the same time.
