clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Which one of us, said the 'wrong' thing i wonder?

I replied to your post and said... "don't you mean iVice!"

But there was another post inbetween that mentioned the clinical name for said hanging objects.

However, I think it was probably your reply that got the thread deleted.

I see the signal from windows 7 audio card devices I click *** Motu main 1&2 chose as default but from the cuefix I dont see any signal from output. I changed so many things in there was not abale produce anything and made sure nothing is muted am not sure what is going on and why its so dificult . It is a mission impossible am at stage want to smash the motu into million piece . Their custromer support is useless have no idesa what they talking about and just mumbling words and jumoing to conclusion without any step by step troubleshoot .total disaster at the moment and I spend almost $600 on this useless box

Organik,

First of all...

Shut down Mac and unplug Hybrid from Mac

Make sure Hybrid is powered up and on using it's own power supply...

Reset the UltraLite Mk3, making sure the unit is not connected to Firewire/USB.

Press the PARAM / SETUP button until you see SETUP.

Use the PAGE knob to scroll to FACTORY DEFAULTS, then press the Value knob to execute.

This gets the Hybrid back to it's default Factory settings.... in case you messed something up using Cuefix...

Next, connect via FW and restart Mac

Launch the Motu Audio Setup program that was instaled when you installed the latest Motu Audio driver software...

(See page 7 of the User Guide)

Make sure Sample rate is set to 48000

Make sure Clock Source is set to Internal (and rest of settings are as shown in User Guide illustration on page 7)

Now plugin Mic or Keyboard Audio Outs into inputs 1 and/or 2

Test and watch meter on Hybrid for movement...

Hi Art I tried all of that . I spent the last 4 days troubleshooting . I cant see any signal coming into cuefix no input what so ever . I probably tried every button on there . The problem not only with imac even on windows I couldn't get sound out of it . At beginning I was able to get sound then it squeaks but as soon as I upgraded the device to latest firmware with usb and adaptor hooked then the sound is gone never reversible. The funy thing I might be dealing with thousand problem at same time I have no idea . It's a shame I won't be even able to return the motu . I hate motu it's garbage for what I paid sorry it's the truth .

Organik,

Have you tried it out without it being connected to the Mac? It works standalone and that would discount everything else out...

You could simply have bricked it when you did the firmware update.... and testing it out without connecting it to a Mac (once you have reset it) would tell you if it's a problem with the unit.. or not. because you don't need cuefx to test it... one you have set it up using the Audio Setup util... and then power down and unplug and test....

Also, why did you use USB?

Dec 24, 2013 1:24 PM in response to Organik76

I won't be even able to return the motu .

Why not? It comes with a full warranty....

I also have to say, in all fairness to Motu... i have installed at least 14 of the Hybrids since they were released (Either in a studio or stepping the client through installation via the phone as per my earlier post in this thread) and never had any issues whatsoever.... I also know at least three of those clients had to update the firmware and none of them had any issues. Note: They all used the PS that came with it... prior to updating the firmware... which makes me think you may have bricked the unit...

Finally, please ignore my question about why you used USB,.. I misunderstood your comment.. I realised you meant you used USB to update firmware, which is correct for a Hybrid... My apologies...

Hi Art thanks a million for helping me out . The reason I cant return it to Motu is because I bought it from B h Photo . Am in touch with B h photo and they are great team it's probably the best store I ever bought from and they are trying to help me out . Maybe am just an unlucky go ended up with a defective device . I will keep trying with B H hoping can get a solution l havnt tried it on standalone yet but will do . I don't know why it was so difficult to update setup find a solution it took me so far two weeks trying to figure out . I really hope b h can take it back so I get out of this situation am in . Thanks again and sorry to hijack the thread but my initial issue was finding the right soundcard for the new imac . At least in this case I know for sure it's not only the imac because I tried it with windows 7 too with no chance to work thanks

Hey Organik,

BHPhotoVideo are a good company.. and they will take returns if they cannot help you resolve the issue.. I know.. I have returned stuff to them before in the past when it wouldn't work with my Mac correctly. .. and they were always very helpful I found.

But, hopefully that won't turn out to be needed..

Have a Merry Christmas.. and fingers crossed this will get worked out quickly for you!

Cheers..

Art, 13 days ago I purchased 21.5 iMac 1TB FD 16GB 3.1 Haswell. I have been using Apogee Ensemble FW/thunderbolt for a year with no problems until this new machine. Same audio problems as everyone else. Apogee tech support is aware of this HARDWARE issue and is working with Apple for a fix. No ETA is available. I have the option to return my new machine and change to 500GB SSD as a 7200 rpm SATA is not available in a 21.5 iMac. The 27" is too big for my purposes as I am limited for space and I am using 2 monitors.

My question is: are there any issues or compromises using SSD for audio production. All of my data and virtual instruments are on FW drives. Your timely response is appreciated as I have one day left to return. Thanks

ArtofSound may be gone for a bit, I haven't seen him post today.

Others have reported the machine working fine with just an SSD drive, no noise.

Apparently as confirmed by Apple it's the Fusion Drive software that controls how the two drives (small SSD & standard HD) work together that's causing the problem. Supposedly??? an update will be available that corrects the problems.

My thinking is... do you really want another layer of software when you're recording real-time data to a drive.

I don't.

Dec 26, 2013 11:50 PM in response to bopfingers

Hi Bopfingers,

Myself, I went through 3 fusion drive computers before swapping the fourth for a 1TB SSD. Everything works great with mine. But keep in mind my AI is not one of the ones listed as having compababilty issues. Right now I have a Thunder bolt cable hooked to a 4TB HD and then daisy chained to another 2TB thunder bolt drive. from there i put in a thunder bolt to firewire 800 adapter then to a fire wire 800 to 400 cable from there I plug into my Presonus firewire inspire 4 in 2 out that is daisy chained to another identicle AI and from there the chain continues to two old 250GB FW 400 HD's. That's 8 devices all hooked up to one Thunder bolt port. The last two HD I kind of just did to see if it would work and it does no problems. I have been running like this for about a week now.

The computer works great with the SSD drive it is the fastest machine I have ever worked on. Just make sure your AI is not one of the USB2 and some FW devices that alot of people seem to be having trouble with.

Good Luck I hope this helps a little,

DeadPhish
