clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

I've been looking all over the internet to see if anyone has been able to upgrade to Mavericks and still use the PreSonus Inspire interface. I've upgraded my audio interface with a newer device recently but I use my Inspire as my input device for Mainstage. The portability and ease of setup can't be beat and I don't see anything in the market that looks like a good replacement for this function. Well that and who wants to spend money on things when you have one that works if you don't upgrade.

I'd just like to give an update on my status,

I have a late 2013 iMac SSD 256, with an Apogee Quartet.

The problem I had was that the Maestro software was freaking out and disconnected the unit etc. The quartet functioned really well without the software but I since I'm used to being able to set levels in the software mixer I just couldn't stand it anymore. I bought the Belkin Thunderbolt Express dock, and it now works flawlessly with the software. It's just such a shame I had to throw so much money on a "work around"...

I don't know who to be angry with, apple or apogee. But freaking Apogee quartet, an expensive fancy ******* MAC ONLY, audio device released last year, is not compatible with the latest iMac? And the fact that the iMac has several issues, not only the usb compatability issue but the fusion drive aswell... it's just messed up. But I'm up and running now, so if you're in the same situation with my setup, consider getting a thunderbolt hub. Buying a new mac in the year of 2013 should be a joyful experience, but this is just horrible, and the fact that a fix hasn't appeared since these problems were noticed in october(?) is just plain awful.

Good luck to all of you, and shame on apple for continuing to sell these computers...

rasmusmarshagen.

While you are completely correct about the Fusion Drive issue being a problem Apple has caused and needs to fix.....

The USB2/3 issue is actually not Apple's fault. In fact many of these same USB 2 devices that that have issues when plugged into USB3 ports on a Mac are also affected in the same way when plugged into PCs with USB3 ports (if they are designed to work with both Macs and PCs.. that is..)... Its all about how some of these USB 2 devices were designed in the first place...and not the computers themselves...

Just wanted to make that clear to prevent others being confused when reading this thread...

Cheers.. and a Happier and more Productive New Year I hope, for you....

Re: the USB problems, why is this only a problem on the new Haswell iMACS and not the 2012s? (Didn't the 2012 iMacs have USB 3.0?)

Anyway, even if the USB 3.0 in the new iMacs are consistent with some spec, it would be nice if Apple (and any other manufacturer) would help engineer a way to make them more universally backwards compatible.

But...

My HUGE gripe w/Apple is their UNCONSCIONABLE refusal to communicate officially about any of this one way or another.

Instead, their policy is to continue to encourage people to buy these computers for audio -- when, corporately, they know that this customer will very likely be plunged into misery.

What utter disregard for customers forking over $2-3k.

As Rasmusmarshegan says: buying a new Mac should be a joyful experience. +1 to "Shame on
Apple."

SAME thing here.

Brand new 27-iMac, cost me about $3000, and the sound cracks and pops randomly with two of my mics and my two USB interfaces. Everything's clear on my MBP.

Let's all report this bug to Apple everyone, it's incredible that after 5 updates this hasn't been addressed yet. I'm not a pro musician, if I were, I'd be mad and never want to go Apple again.

Dec 28, 2013 8:34 PM in response to David Pelletier

David and LogicL1,

The issue here is that the USB2/3 issue may well not be anything to do with Apple... or their Hardware... but the way certain USB2 devices were originally designed and the fact those designs are not 100% compatible with certain USB3 interfaces...which is why the same problem can be seen with Windows PCs too.

This is why some USB2 devices work fine and other's don't. Those USB2 devices that always used or can now use drivers, seem to work or can be made to work with updated drivers, just fine... It's the class compliant ones (Driverless) for the most part, that do not work properly though even that isn't clear cut as some class compliant devices such as the iConnectMidi2+ is driverless and class compliant and works perfectly well as both a Midi and Audio device.. with a USB3 port. I'm using one here myself, with a 2013 iMac without issue via a USB3 port...

M-Audio for example.. offered this little gem a few months back, on the problem..

M-Audio USB devices are not qualified for use on USB 3.0 ports at this time. If you are experiencing problems such as pops, clicks, crackles, dropouts, and distortion, or if your device is not recognized or drops offline, make sure your device is connected to a USB 2.0 (or USB 1.1) port.

So, while I get the frustration.. you may be directing it at the wrong people/company....

Now, the Fusion Drive issue is an entirely different proposition and is an issue that is squarely at Apple's feet to fix.. This is one issue they (Apple) should be making some form of public announcement about for sure... but the USB2/3 issue.. It just isn't that straightforward enough to point the finger of blame at Apple...

Hi TboneSTL,

I can tell you the Presonus inspire is working just fine on my 2013 27" imac with SSD with Mavericks loaded. If you go to there website it lists them as not being supported but they work fine for me. In fact I just picked up a second one on eBay for $50 because you can combine them to double your inputs.

I normally wouldn't set it up this way with other ports available but it was a new computer so I was throwing everything I had at it to see what it could do. I had the computers ac outlet plugged in then I came off the computer with a thunderbolt cable into a seagate thunderbolt adapter for the 4Tb backup plus from there I daisy chained to another seagate thunderbolt adapter for the 2Tb backup plus out of that I used a thunderbolt to firewire adapter from apple then a firewire 800 to firewire 400 cable to plug in the presonus inspire and daisy chained the second one of of that one then just for the heck of it I had two old 250GB FW drives that I daisy chaned onto the end and everything worked flawlessly. I was absolutely perfect. I know that's what it's supposed to do but I had just went through a nightmare and 4 replacement macs because of the fusion drive till I finally gave up on the fusion drive and went for the SSD. Yes when you add everything up the price starts to get pretty close to the 4K mark but my line of thinking is max it out when you get it and it should last you between 7 and 10 years. I still use my 2007 imac daily for the basics but my sun still uses it to play all the top graphics games like call to duty and boarder land and has no trouble. That computer is coming up on its 7th birthday and am hoping for a few more. IMG_2022.jpeg

I wanted to give you guys a quick update of my issue, which had an unexpected evolution over the last weeks. Just to recap: I have a Late 2013 Fusion Drive iMac and I experienced clicks and pops on recordings I made with the internal microphone. Apple replaced it but the replacement had the same problem. I was convinced that this was the FD issue as also discussed in this thread. However, my problem seems to have been resolved with the 10.9.1 update... I tested by starting up from a 10.9 external clone and when I do that still experience the problem. When starting up from the internal FD with 10.9.1, I don't have the problem anymore. I didn't find anything in the release notes but something did change. Very strange.

I still have another problem though, which is certainly hardware related. The right bottom side of my screen faintly ticks when the screen is 'warming up' (after waking from sleep or after changing the brightness). It seems like the screen or the glue 'settling' or something and I thought it might go away but it's already at it for a couple of weeks now. It isn't loud and starts after sleep with one tick every 30 secs or so to completely disappear after 30 minutes. I can also reproduce/trigger the sound by gently pressing on the glass of the screen (black part). It's really annoying and I'm considering still returning this machine in exchange for another one. Discussion with Apple led to their promise to still take back the iMac until somewhere early January if my problem wouldn't be resolved. So I still have that option open but would only reluctantly doing it since I already set up two machines in the last 2 months. I know this isn't a thread for that but did any of you guys ever experience something like this?

Dec 30, 2013 4:06 PM in response to RReye

Hi RReye,

Glad to hear you got your audio going. On your question about the ticking in the lower right hand corner of the glass. It sounds like an anomoly to me I went through 4 machines till I finally went with a fusion drive and they all sat on my coffee table while I waited for the next new one so I was very close to it for extended periods of time while it would go to sleep and wake up. But if its happining to you I'm sure there is somebody else out there with the same exact problem.

Good Luck,

DeadPhish

Like so many others, I'm having the external audio problems.

Late 2013 iMac, Fusion Drive. Latest Mavericks and Logic Pro X.

Used Focusrite Saffire 24, Motu 4 Pre. Both were terribly noisy, had dropouts and would completely quit transmitting audio. Get somewhat better results with old Roland 25 UA EX USB interface, but still get some noise.

They must fix this.

Dec 30, 2013 6:13 PM in response to ges8ges

Oh, and I spoke to Apple and Logic Pro support today for about an hour. As usual they were very nice and tried to be helpful but I was amazed that they seemed to be unaware of this problem and kept trying to direct blame to the audio interfaces.
