My iPhone 4s will not charge

I've had my iPhone for almost 2 years now, my upgrade is due in a couple of months- so it may just be that the battery is worn out, but any alternative possible solutions would be great.

All of a sudden its just stopped charging- never had any previous problems or signs that the battery was on its last legs- just plugged it in last night and it wouldnt work. Tried 2 other charges, tried usb, all in all ive tried 4 different chargers and nothing. I've blown into it, checked for dust and it still won't work.

I'm on 19% battery and getting desperate so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do your Home and Power buttons both work? If they do: Hold them both down at the same time until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds - really.....30 seconds....if the Slide to Power Off bar shows up, ignore it - wait for the Apple).

If the Apple appears, your device is resetting, and the Slide to Unlock Screen will display shortly.

I woke up today to a dead Iphone 4s even though it had been on charge (ipnone charging cord) all night. Tried holding bot sleep button and home button and all I got was an outline picture of an empty battery. Now have it plugged in to computer and after about ten minutes the computer recognized it. It had charged up to 2 % so I turned it off hoping it will charge completely. Was planning to upgrade to the 6plus soon but not today! Hope I can back up my stuff.

It's just such a scam to have a working fine iPhone one day and then for it to be unable to charge. It's all well and good for companies to create products that are great without addressing a few weak points so the whole thing is unusable within a couple of years. But I'm stranded in a third world country with no phone, no money to buy a new one and was given absolutely no warning that the last half decent thing in my life, a gift from a friend, their old iPhone 4s, was going to stop charging and be irreparable. This phone was helping me to help people. Now I can't even make a phone call. Think it's time to just curl up in a ball and cry. We are forced to rely on these ridiculous products and spend all our money on them in order to function reasonably in the greater part of society and I am 100% over it. A quality, reliable, repairable product is so much more important than features and apps.

If you will tell us exactly what your issue is, and what you have tried, we probably can help you. What happens when you try to charge your phone? Do you get an error message? If so, what is it? Have you tried cleaning out the ports? Tried a different cable? There are many troubleshooting steps that can be tried in a "Phone won't charge" situation. But you have given us absolutely nothing to go on. Please provide us with some information so we can see if you can be helped.

Best of luck,

Thank you, I honestly really wasn't expecting anyone to read or help me. My phone didn't give any error messages. I just plugged it in and it was charging then stopped and then kept charging then stopping. I kept hearing it making that ding sound when the charger is unplugged so I thought the cable had been bumped but it was fine. I have an Apple cable and have tried charging it with a number of Apple cables and different chargers and my laptop. I have tried cleaning the ports. I also took it to a place that replaced the charging part of the phone. They got it to charge up to 100% once but then when they tried it again it wouldn't charge anymore and now my start button isn't working so I have to use that button that they put on the screen itself. So the people who tried repair it, even though they seemed like they knew what they were doing, probably just make things worse. So there it is. Still not much to go on I'm afraid. I've done everything you find when you Google this issue. I'm at about 60% now and it looks like when this runs out that'll be the end of my iPhone.

Yeah, the problem is probably directly related to the people who tried to repair it. It doesn't sound like you have access to an Authorized Apple Reseller near you, so I understand that that may have been your only option, but I fear you are correct in surmising that it may have just made things worse.

When they were not able to charge it up again after "fixing" it, what did they say? Not much of a fix if they left you with a phone that sometimes charged before and now doesn't charge at all.... 😟

It wouldn't hurt for you to try cleaning the ports again. Use a soft, clean toothbrush or a toothpick and see if there is any debris in the port at all. If there is, then it is possible that it might allow the ports to connect properly so that it can charge.

Since your Home button isn't working, we can't try a reset, so the port cleaning is the only thing I can think of that might help short of attempting to restore the phone. Do you have iTunes on your laptop? If you connect the iPhone to your laptop with the USB cable is is recognized at all?

It was just making the noise when I plugged it in and wasn't charging at all. I did a reset and that didn't do anything either. Taking it to the store was really a last resort because the phone wasn't turning on at all anyway so I didn't have much to lose. At least they got it to charge up once so I could check my messages one last time and retrieve a few bits of information. When I plug it into my laptop it is not being recognised by iTunes I've cleaned the port again but no joy. What does restoring the phone involve? I don't have a lot of things on my phone and all my photos are backed up so I don't mind wiping info. I just love to use it for Viber and WeChat and Instagram to keep in touch with home.

Well, you'd need to get it to be recognized by iTunes first, so here are some troubleshooting steps you can try for that (wasn't sure if you had a Mac or PC, so have both listed):

Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

If you can get it to recognize your device, then you can try to do the restore:

IOS RECOVERY MODE RESTORE

Are you certain that it is not the USB cable? If it is not charging and it is not being recognized by the computer, and you have cleaned out the ports, then that kind of points to the cable (or to the port, which is questionable right now).

Best of luck,
