iPod Shuffle green/yellow flashing APPLE READ THIS AND POST IT!!!

This was posted by ipod user pcgoddess and this is the only way I got my ipod shuffle to work. It would not play it would just blink green and orange. Apple couldn't even put up a solution on their own website. If I were Apple I would be embarrassed.

"After searching high and low, I found a solution in another chat area. It takes a few minutes, but it works.

Place the Shuffle in your PCs USB.

A dialog box may pop up. Do not click it.

Do not click any dialog which pops up asking if you want to put songs from this pc onto this ipod, deleting the old ones.

Click edit, preferences, then select the "ipod" tab.

Check the box "enable disk use".

Move the slider to the right so that it is set to more data (maximum), and 0 songs.

Click ok.

Right click your start button and select "Explore".

Navitage to My Computer, and then seek the drive which represents the shuffle.

Right click the drive and select format.

Leave the options as they are.

Click Start.

After formatting, click eject ipod (icon in the bottom right of the itunes window).

Remove the shuffle.

Re-insert the shuffle. "

I had a slightly different solution, but was able to get my son's shuffle working using the instructions in the previous post--

It wasn't recognizing that that the shuffle had been connected as many others have mentioned. I was getting a pop-up window (which I couldn't ignore because I couldn't go into "edit/preferences" without answering or closing.)

The message refered to the fact that the music was being shared by another user (which I suspected to be my daughter who uses the same PC and has an IPod mini). I tried selecting, "No, don't import the songs to this user" which did nothing, but then when I selected "Yes, import the songs to this user" I was able to see the device listed in iTunes and could follow through the instructions in the previous thread beginning with "Click edit, preferences, then select the "ipod" tab.".

Agree that Apple needs to get with the program--Too many people are having the same problem!

I found a solution to RED/GREEN flashing lights on Macs (though there might be a similar way to achieve this on PCs.

1) I took the (above) advice of not clicking on the text box when the iShuffle first mounted. (This would remove the iShuffle, icon and any chance of updating the drive.) In Mac, however, my iTunes Preferences were ghosted out, so I was unable to proceed in that direction. Instead I clicked on the desktop.

2) I then went to the Utilities folder and opened the recent iPod Updates. I ran this, highlighting the iShuffle which appeared in the disk list. It failed throwing up an error.

3) I then returned to iTunes and clicked the text box and removed the iShuffle.

4) When I plugged it back in a warning appeared to say this was not a disk recognized by OS10. (In short, the drive had been erased or corrupted, but so had the software preventing the update.) I clicked ‘Initialize’ in the text box and returned to Utilities and the iPod Updater. I was now able to reinstall a drive. Unfortunately all data had been erased but I had a new, empty, iShuffle which I have been able to restock from my iTunes

Does this suggest it’s some form of data/software problem?

After 3 months of not being recognized, I plugged my "dead" shuffle into my ibook with itunes 7.0. It saw the shuffle (this was not library the shuffle had been connected to) and updated it.

I had tried the shuffle with this computer before with no luck. Basically the shuffle sat around for a month without me trying to get it recognized by any computer. I don't get it but it works now.

I now know the ‘flashing signal lights’ on my Shuffle was caused by a faulty USB socket. It’s happened several times when I plugged it in the same socket. Bad connection and the computer warns ‘Device Removed’ (though it hasn’t) just before it begins flashing.
On every occasion I have successfully reinstalled the drive using the sequence I mentioned above. However, I always have to create a bad format before the computer asks if I want to ‘Initialize’. I’m sure there must be a similar sequence for ‘Windows’.

My shuffle has a similar problem. When I connect it to computer I can see "Removable Disk" instead of my ipod name in "My Computer". When I try to open it it gives me "Device I/O error". I can neither format it through Windows or through DOS. Gives same error. ITunes doesnt detect it. Ipod Updater goes to sleep for long and returns with another error. When I switch it on the same green/yellow light flashes. Any pointers on this????

Could it be a formatting problem? Does ITunes 7 default to format MAC shuffles to Windows and Windows shuffles to MACs? No idea... maybe it means something
