microphone not being recognized by Garage Band

I HAVE SET both preferences in Mac Preferences and GB preferences to use "built in input" on a real instrument. With a sony Sony electret ecm-ds70p microphone, but while GB will recognize the built in internal mic, it will not recognize the plugged in mic.

Please advise soonest!

iBook, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You're plugging your mic into the headphone jack. The iBook has no Audio input

The line in is not powered, you will need some type of interface like a griffin imic. See the link above, that is probably what you are running into:

The Sony electret ecm-ds70p microphone is NOT a powered mic, and worked with GB the first time we tried it, just not since. It also still works with our Sony Minidisc recorder (which also, to my knowledge does NOT support powered mics either).

The procedures we tried were setting input to "line in" in Mac General Preferences and then doing the same in GarageBand preferences.
