My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

This is what macpaw says about it:

  1. Drag CleanMyMac Classic icon from the Applications folder to the Trash.
  2. Drag the CleanMyMac Classic folder located in the Application Support folder inside the Library folder in your home user folder to the Trash.
  3. Drag the CleanMyMac Classic folder located in the Application Support folder inside the Library folder on your System Drive to the Trash.
  4. Drag the com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool.plist,com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher.plist, andcom.macpaw.CleanMyMac.trashSizeWatcher.plist files from the LaunchAgents folder located in the Library folder in your Home user folder to the Trash.
  5. Drag the com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.plist file from the Preferences folder located in the Library folder inside your Home user folder to the Trash.

After doing this, your copy of CleanMyMac Classic will be completely uninstalled from your Mac.===================

After this we have to remove more files, but those are not important now, we will do that later.

Adobe/Akamai writes this:

How do I remove the Akamai Download Manager?

Mac OS: Navigate to [user]/Applications/Akamai and double-click Akamai NetSession Uninstaller.

==============

That is probably not there (anymore). For now:

in Finder click the GO menu

hold the Alt(option) key, click Library in the Go menu,

in the Library folder open the LaunchAgents folder,

There you delete the

com.adobe.ARM.....

and

com.akamai....

entries.

Do first what Linc asks.

Then uninstall Akamai (not compatible and a known item to cause problems).

Uninstall Soundflower (same).

Uninstall GeekTool (same).

SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems tab: remove the two lines from the Etrecheck report, (with the minus sign underneath).

Remove both items from the User InternetPlugins.

Throw the following from your LaunchDaemons: com.adobe.SwitchBoard.plist

and from LaunchAgents: com.adobe.CS5ServiceManager.plist

Uninstall growl: you do not need that anymore in ML10.8.5.

Uninstall net culator, do not forget to delete the Simble plugin too).

pffff,

Thanks but I wish hadn't. Now with 10.8.5 my Wifi is not working. Apprently a very common problems for early model MacBook Pros. Cant fix it and can't downgrade to 10.8.4 Bummer.

But tell me why this Mac is running so slow. I rebuild desktop and reinstalled and upgraded the OSX but still running very slow.

Dec 9, 2013 2:12 AM in response to bassgirl

Hi bassgirl,

It is mostly removing remnants now, good job so far.

1. Akamai: in Finder goto your accountname /Library/ LaunchAgents/ in there delete the line com.Akamai....

in SystemPreferences delete the Akamai applet.

2. Also delete the line com.Adobe.ARM.... when you are there.

3. Now you can also uninstall Apptrap, you do not need it anymore. Check if the applet is gone from the SystemPreferences

4. In SystemPreferences click the Users&Groups applet, click the LoginItemsTab: in there remove the lines

Captur and Apptrap by using the minus sign underneath.

5. In Finder MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/ remove the com.adobe.SwitchBoard.plist

6. it is not necessary to remove remnants left behind by Apptrap listed under "Old Applications" in the Etrecheck List.

------- I again strongly suggest to uninstall Chrome.

------- If you have no urgent need of Java, uninstall it, otherwise update it (do not delete Javascript, which has nothing to do with Java).

After this run Etecheck again and let's see if we have done everything necessary.
