My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

This is the external CD/DVD dirive (if you have one). You can only see what it is when you have such a thing connected.

You probably have nothing important on your internal disk after the school "wiped it clean". If the internal disk is dead or dying you loose all that you have on it. This MBA is about 5 years old, not uncommon for the disk to be dying. If there are any files that you want saved, do that on a small external disk, or even on a USB stick.

What I wanted to know about the Applets: forget it, there probably are only the standard ones: Applets are the icons in the System Preferences; you find the System Preferences in the Applications Folder.

Post back when you have Apple looked at it.

Hi ianna,

You have more than enough Ram and more than enough space on the disk.

1. as John has already said: indeed, the first you have to do is getting rid of the crapware MacKeeper and CleanMyMac: there is an uninstaller on the Mackeeper site (zeobit.com), and when you start CleanMyMac, there is an uninstaller in the main menu. See also John's post. This is very important.

After that restart the Macbook and empty the TrashBin.

2. in SystemPreferences, Users&Groups, LoginItems:

remove all entries (this just stops them always running after startup, it does not uninstall them), use the minus sign underneath.

Then restart the Macbook.

3. I advise to uninstall Cafeine, does not do anything for you; use the settings in Mavericks.

4. I strongly advise to uninstall Elmedia Player: read here how to do it:

http://wiki.eltima.com/user-guides/elmedia-player/uninstall.html

When you can not do with the Apple applications, download and install the best (and free) player: VLC; do that later after the clean up.

5. I am not familiar with QQ, but I think that Apple Messages is good enough, thus I propose to use that and uninstall QQ.

6. Go to MacintoshHD / Library / ApplicationSupport / delete the Simble folder with everything in it. (it is installed with another third party app, when necessary it can easliy be reinstalled.).

7. Now the rest of the cleaning:

Go to MacintoshHD /Library/LaunchAgents/ delete the file with "culator.SIMBL" in the name.

Go to MacintoshHD /Library/InternetPlugins/ delete the two AdobePDFViewer plugins (they are not needed for anything) and delete the JavaAppletPlugin (Java is not installed, this is a leftover form earlier installations) and delete the nlastpass file (if it is still there after the uninstalls in point 1).

8. Go to your Homefolder /Library/InternetPlugins/ delete the iGetterBundle ! If you have that downloader still on the Macbook, uninstall it. and you may also delete the QQmail file and the txtfn file.

9. restart the computer, empty the TrashBin

10. Check if you have the latest versions of Dropbox and GoogleDrive:, then put them in SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems again.

11. post a new etrecheck list

John,

According to this article http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-2, I should download and reinstall CleanMyMac and then to uninstall it completely again?

You can do that, but as I wrote MacPaw's instructions do not remove it completely. It's junk. They will not care if it ruins your Mac, and their End User License Agreement - which you agreed to by installing it - completely absolves them of any responsibility should that occur as a result of using it.

All those companies want is your money. Once they get it, their mission is complete, and you aren't even entitled to a refund if you paid for it. You agreed to that too.

All I can suggest is what I would do if I were in your situation, which would be to completely erase your Mac and reconfigure it due to the unknown effects of having garbage products installed. However, that is a personal decision only you can make.

Thanks, guys!

Well, as it sounds a bit strange to me, so I didn't choose to reinstall it to remove it.

Here is the report again after a whole day cleaning!

Please have a look and tell me my nightmare is over.

MMM, work to do.

You have enough Ram and enough diskspace.

Your system is cripled by some softwares installed that are absolutely counterproductive and cripling your system:

1. MacKeeper has to go, one of the worst crapwares. Go to www.zeobit.com and find the MacKeeper Uninstaller there. Use it. We deal with leftovers later.

2. CleanMyMac, the same, start CleanMyMac, then in the left panel you see Uninstall. Do that. There will be leftovers, but we will take care of that after this.

3. LittleSnitch, same, Uninstall it also: click the LitlleSnitch installer file, click it, and there is a uninstall visible. Use it. We will deal with leftovers later.

After this do a restart, after the restart empty the Trash bin.

Most of your problems should be less now.

Then produce a new Etrecheck list and we will remove the leftovers and then also change a few things to make your computer run better.

Lex

EDIT1: You must also uninstall Akamai: a well known cripler also.

EDIT2: if you do not have the LittleSnitch installer file anymore, you can download it with this:
