Randomly Turns Off

Wait so what i'm getting now is that these notebooks are suppose to self destruct after a month?!

My empathy goes out to all the victims. My my Apple have just not had a good year with portables have they?

You are week 19. It's the number after the 6. I have week 20 and have not had a shutdown yet, so I don't think it matters what week it was built. I did have the vertical colored line, but I believe that was related to the 10.4.7 update.

I have one week 20 Macbook ,after 10.4.7 update i
started to shutdown (error 82), frequently, After
some days i installed 10.4.7 intel combo (133 mb) and
it has not crashed since, thats more than one week
ago. ?!?

I just tried installing the Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo Intel as you said, but unfortunately this had no effect.

Not a heating issue, not at all. Mine has done it right after I first powered it up after being shut down all night. Random shut down in as fast as 2 minutes of powering up is not a heat problem.

Well I am sad to say that I just had my second random turn off. The bad thing about this one was that the only program that i was running was finder. The shutdown actually happened when i wasn't actively using my macbook. I was playing my xbox and went to look something up on my macbook. I thought that my computer was in sleep mode but alas it had shut it's self down. I called apple care and they had me go through an extensive hardware test which didn't come up with anything. On a good note both times that I called apple care they have been pretty fast and nice. Ciao

That is my hunch also. And judging from the fact that Apple does not appear to have recognized or done something about the issue (if they have they have kept silent about it) guess what's going to happen 2 months from now to the MacBooks that have been "fixed" with logic board replacements

My MacBook has terrible trouble powering up... sometimes I have to press the on botton several times... couldn't figure out what was wrong, brought in to an Apple store a week ago and they tested it out, said there was nothing wrong with it... couldn't repeat the problem in the store. Waking up from sleep seems to be the biggest issue...

OK- count me in.

I was watching a view on youtube last night with some friends- turned off.

This morning I was watching another video- same thing.

This afternoon I was playing a flash game- same thing.

Tonight I was sending an email- same thing.

Tonight I was IMing a friend and writing some PHP- same thing- off.

I'm thinking it's a heat issue- 'cause when it turns off it won't turn back on for a few minutes while it cools down. It seems to be when I'm doing processor intensive tasks.

This is the worst apple product I've ever used. I've had an iBook G3, PowerBook G4 15", iMac G5, and Mac mini- not one of them have had a problem. I've already had my logic board replaced (and by the looks of the repair report that came back with my computer it was done 3 times- apple had my macbook for 2.5 weeks).

What are my options? Refund? Replacement? Send it in again and wait ages to get it fixed? I'm very frustrated because I was planning on this being my only machine, but I need it to make a living. URG!!

I guess it's a construction error and will happen sooner or later to most of the macbooks. I just hope Apple/Asus did locate the error!

To those who didn't have the error yet: just pray that it won't happen. My week 21 MacBook didn't have a glitch until 2 days ago (apart from the famos mooing which didn't bother me at all)! Now it's getting worse every cold boot. I guess at this rate, my MacBook won't be usable anymore by Monday or Tuesday.

Apple or Asus are in big trouble about this I think, 'cause there will be thousends of MacBooks they will have to repair/replace.

My MacBook started shutting off a couple of weeks ago.. I dismissed it at first but it started doing it more and more frequently.

I brought it into the Apple store and told the Genius what was going on... I referenced this thread.. He was curious what y'all had figured out about the issue and if there had been any resolutions... I let him know that replacing the machine was the only resolution that had been found.

So, I'm writing you guys on a brand new MacBook with my old hard drive swapped into it (by request).. it's a week 22 (which I found odd) but it's definitely brand new. It's idling around 50 degrees and I couldn't get it past 74 with yes > /dev/null.. oh.. and NO DEAD PIXELS AND NO FREAKING MOO!

we'll see if this lasts. I'll keep you updated.

How can I discern the production week of my Macbook? I see this mentioned frequently with regard to the power/heat issue... this the info under About this Mac:

The 4th and 5th numbers in the serial number are its production week. For example, if the serial number is 4H622... then its production week was the 22nd.

Heck, the support person I talked to even tried to
convince me that it is normal for these new Mac's to
shut-off from time to time but its all worth it
because Apple's are so much better than normal PC's.

You've gotta be kidding. lol.

I just saw one of the mac ads, where they say explicitly that "they don't crash" I wanted to knock the TV off the stand. My mac is sitting in some truck at DHL enroute to Apple to fix it for consistently CRASHING. ugh.

This is why I hope that it was a bad batch of boards or whatever and not a common defect, because otherwise the "repaired" unit could break again if it uses the same defective parts. Although I have another macbook which has had no issues whatsoever so far, so I just hope there was a huge, faulty shipment of boards or whatever and that the new parts are good to go.
