Randomly Turns Off

My Macbook just randomly turns off sometimes without me doing anything. Then I'll try and boot it back up and it takes me pressing the button about 3 times for it to finally actually boot up. I have it connected to my power supply the whole time, so I'm positive that it's not a power issue. Any advice?

Sure, but at some point they presumably WILL fix the issue. At which point taking it in is the right thing to do. For a lot of people, the random shutdown makes the machine completely unusable. In that case, why bother holding onto the machine; might as well send it in and get it fixed. Even if it doesn't get fixed, it may end up working for a couple days before failing again; a couple days that you'd never have if you didn't send it in.

AppleCare claims mine is fixed; took it into the SouthPoint, NC store on 7/19; going to pick it up tonight, assuming the service guys there also claim it's fixed 🙂 They are supposedly "running tests" on it right now ...

Would I not be better to wait until they know for
sure what is wrong before handing it over to them for
a repair?

I honestly don't know. I don't have the time to find out, so it's at repair right now.

If it's been under 14 days since you bought the machine, I suggest you get a refund. If not, and you have the time to wait for it to be fixed, then maybe you should send it in just to be safe. If it's still not working then you can make a decision from there.

Well first off if you don't contact apple and attempt to have it serviced then they don't know you also suffer with the issue. So if they feel it's very isolated they won't worry too much. But if more people have open claims regarding the issue they'll know there's more of an issue. Even if you don't send it in, at least call and open up a case.

Secondly, if they replace it and it breaks again you have the beginning of a very good case against the company if you can prove it's hurting you or your business financially. And I guess the best point is, what if the replacement fixes it? And you've decided not to send it in and continue to experience these issues when others are repaired.

Just some things to think about.

Holding down the power button would get my old MacBook to boot when it was stuck in the shutdown during boot behavior, but I'd still eventually suffer a sudden shutdown later. Thank heavens I didn't have any lost work or severe drive corruption.

I'm wondering about running yes to heat stress my replacement MacBook, but I'm afraid to do that and possibly make this one unstable. On the other hand, the hardware should be able to handle full CPU load without suffering. Without knowing the exact cause of the random shutdown problem, I have no means of estimating whether or not "yes" would induce an issue. Eventually, I'll stress it, but for the time being I'd like to enjoy a few days of using the machine. Might be solid anyways, but I do hate this heightened sense of distrust of my laptop. I rely on mine everyday as my main machine. It does major duty all day running from operating room to operating room.

Same here. Random shutdowns on a week 21 white macbook.
It actually happens everytime the machine wakes up from sleep mode after it has been that way (in sleep) for about an hour.
Anything can cause the shutdown: finder, safari, itunes...
I went through the whole exercise of PMU, PRAM resets until I finally called Apple care. After asking me to go through the usual rigmarole of disk utility, Apple Hardware Test (which in fact caused the machine to shutdown!) without any success, they finally asked me to ship the notebook off for repair. It has been with them since 07/12 and when I asked a customer rep. about the long wait she said they are waiting for a logic board.
I love the machine otherwise and I'm hoping that the logic board replacement will fix the problem.

Just wanted to chime in.

Had my macbook for almost two months now and have just began experiencing the random shutdowns. The first time it happened the computer shut down three times in a row while trying to launch quicktime but then ran fine for another few weeks. Lately, the error is occuring several times a day.

For any of you out there who has or have had this problem... what can I do to get a completely different system? I've read posts in here where some have had to wait weeks for a logic board to be replaced only to find the system is still faulty.

I'd rather just get a completely new machine so at least I won't end up waiting for nothing.

My MacBook went in for a Logic Board replacement, which is what the technician recommended after he confirmed the shutdown issue. I don't know if this is Apple's official word.

I think what most of want (in addition to a machine that doesn't shut down on a whim) is just a simple "The MacBook shutdown problem is caused by x, y, and/or z."

Exactly. I don't care that it happened. It's bound to happen. But just tell us what's up. I can't do ANY work on this machine. I've lost so much already and now they want me to ship the thing to them to get fixed on good faith. That's crazy. It's a complete waste of time to send it in. We haven't heard one report of a completely fixed machine after repairs.

All....please make sure you do call Apple within 90 days of purchase or you will be charged for the support call. You only get one free call within the 1st 90 days of purchase.

After getting hung up on twice, I had my husband call. We have no choice but to ship it to them and let them repair it. They will be replacing my screen, most of the inner components and my case. Why not give me a new one? Cause they clearly do not know what the issue is and I am guessing that they are worried a new machine will have same issues. I think they have no clue and all product specialists have been told to offer repair only if over 14 days of purchase.

But, I advise all of you, do not wait, at least open a case on it. Do not let it go unreported or go beyond 90 days of purchase. I am going to keep sending it back to them until they fix everything or give me a new one. Whatever it takes at this point because it is not safe to use it as it is. It is a timebomb waiting to explode. I back up everyday.

First of all let me say that I have been an Apple user for about 5 years now and have loved every minute. I love Apple so much that I actually got a part-time job at a local Apple Store ... I haven't worked there since Oct. 2005 but I still know everyone there.

Anyway, that being said. Apple has not officially released anything that corrects this issue. But I spoke to a Mac Genius friend of mine and they have been told by Apple that the recommended fix for this issue is to replace the 'MLB' (Main Logic Board). So, he ordered mine, it came in today (3 days later) and I dropped off my MacBook. I should have it back tomorrow and I will let you know what the result is.
