Randomly Turns Off

My Macbook just randomly turns off sometimes without me doing anything. Then I'll try and boot it back up and it takes me pressing the button about 3 times for it to finally actually boot up. I have it connected to my power supply the whole time, so I'm positive that it's not a power issue. Any advice?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Im sure this s happening to many others, were just the nes posting the issue. Also when i called apple care the acted real weird about it. Kind like if the gov new about ufo's and you called in a sighting. Like they new about it, or had knoledge of it. Hey man post up asap about what the apple store does for ya. I real just want to exhange mine for a new one. I hate having things that have been pulled apart to fix. yeah i know its a puter, but its like having a new front end put on your car, its just never the same. I have to say though I love Apple, and my ho[es are there working a fix for this as hard as they can!

I've had the same problem. I called AppleCare, and
they set me up for a Logic Board replacement. It was
taken care of quickly; however, the random shut downs
started happening again today.

Now this is really worrying for me. My MacBook is with Apple for testing. I'm worried that either they will not see the problem or the logic board replacement will not work.

I'm prepared to pay extra to get a replacement new MacBook from a later batch. Is this possible?

I just got of phone with mac genius, he said this was a huge issue with earler macbook but say it was kept quiet. He said some of the older ones took longer for the problems to show. I wanted a 1 for 1 replacment for my laptop they said no they will just order a new logic board and replace it. So ill save the gas money and send it in. Oh well. He said the people recieveing the new macbooks are not having this problem. I just hope if it happens again down the road they will adress the issue. And not tell me I should have purchased more applecare.

Got mine back from repair today.

The guy at the counter at my local applestore was told that they couldnt replicate the problem at Apple. (He tried it once when I brought it in and it crashed straight away). The guy who repaired it said that the repair center just reset the pram and pmu and that the problem was solved.

I turned it on in the store and it crashed 3 times in the 5 minutes I had it on.. So I guess it just went to be repaired, and they just sent it back without doing anything..

The servicecounter guy got pretty ****** and made it his personal goal to get my macbook declared dead, and that the guy responsible for the so-called repair would definitely hear of this.

He's gonna make some calls and get back to me on Monday for a replacement machine.. Needless to say he was quite stunned that it went out for repair, was gonna for a week and came back untouched..

well anyway here's hoping it will be solved next week.. Ive used it for a week and been trying to get it fixed for 2 weeks now..

I got back from the Apple Store 2 hours ago. My machine shut off 3 times while the genius looked at it. He referenced my Apple support ticket number and saw that I already did all the troubleshooting (PMU, PRAM, Permissions, etc.). They swapped it for a brand new machine and let me keep my old hard drive. YEAH APPLE! My old machine was week 21. This one is week 24. On for 2 hours and no problems. I'll keep you posted on how it continues to perform. I agree - it felt like they knew there were problems, especially because they gave me a new machine when I had purchased the old one June 4. But, he did see it turn off three times AND I showed him the logs showing "Previous Shutdown Cause: -82" dating back to June 12, that's right, just 8 days after I bought it.

A+ to Apple for giving me a new machine. Let's hope it's not a temporary solution. Fingers crossed!

Gram, i think you are right. I've been having the same problem. Using CoreDuoTemp i've noticed that my computer shuts down everytime it reaches around 171 - 172 degrees. It doesnt matter what im doing... surfing the web, itunes, watching a video... as long as it gets to that temperature it will shut down.

I sent the computer to get fixed by Apple, so i'll let you guys know what they do to it. It is probably a bad logic board.

Well they ran some tests on it while i went to see a movie, and it crashed twice. So i got a brand new one plus 12 bucks back cause of a recent tax cut. Woo!

ON the down side, the top surface feels rougher, like the kind that will discoulor.. I think.. Its a week 27 build for what its worth

I think your dead blackbook is a slightly different issue. The random shutoff issue resembles a shutdown, like a complete loss of power. The machine would start up either by a single press of the power button, or other times, by holding the power button for about ten seconds ubtil the loud beep. Once the machine was booted again, it was subject to the random shutoffs. But somehow, the press and hold for ten seconds (w/ loud beep) would seem to clear the issue for a while, maybe a few hours, maybe a day or so.

I think it's good news that several of us have received new replacment machines even outside of the "magic" 14-day window. Mine was purchased 6/4 (issue first occurred 6/12), Apple support ticket 6/29, and replacement machine today 7/7.

If you're not offered a replacment, insist, be firm, and speak to a manager if necessary. This issue is now widespread and documented. There's no reason any of you should accept a repair on a 30-day old (or less) machine.

Use your console logs (/var/log/system.log.[number] and filter on "Previous Shutdown Cause" - this will show exactly when the issue occured, surfaced, and how often. Of course, it helps if the machine dies 3 times in front of a genius, like mine did. 🙂
