iPod Classic will not charge from wall outlet

I have the same problem. Tried charging it with all the apple chargers I could lay my hands on, but the iPod would only charge with the computer. I purchased a new apple charger. Still didn't work. I rang up apple and booked to see a technician, which I did this morning. I took in all my USB cables and chargers including the new one. The tech tried it with all the cables and chargers. Still didn't work. Another new one was taken from stock to try. Still didn't work. Would charge with their computer, also. Finally we found a charger that it did work with. An old one which they have had in the shop for years! Since my iPod Classic, which was purchased back in March 2008, all of the internal workings of later adapters, not iPods have been changed. Consequently, none will work with the old 6th generation IPod Classic, which is now considered Vintage. I suspect this is the issue with all older iPod Classics purchased around the world.

Not to be outdone, I went to a Hifi store to try a couple of other brands of adapters, such as Belekin, before purchasing one. Still no success. The old vintage just won't work with modern adapters, so charging via the computer is the only way to do it. Frustrating, but at least the ipod classic is not at fault, and is still in perfect working order :-)

i could only charge my iPod Classic 120 with my mbpro

but not my IPAD USB power supply (familiar 2 inch square , "10w USB Power Adaptor")

i tried resetting the ipod several times but this did not help.

seems its a problem between the classic and the apple charger

i tried a small 1 inch cube 5w usb charger from apple and my classic began charging IMMEDIATELY

complete with the charging animation display

my ipod classic does not SEEM to charge using my APPLE charger but my SHUFFLE does????

Ok so the iPod classics had a cord that worked for it and unfortunately you need one of the original cables that the iPod comes with from time to time it's healthy to do a hard reset just to keep it in working order. You'll notice some of the newer cables for the iPad won't work for classics. So try an older cable, then I'D try replacin the port for the classic. Like a Gameboy it tends to get dirt in it and it messes up the charging process

Not true. My ancient 2004 4th gen iPod works with the latest Apple USB power adapters (I've tried it with the small 5W "cube" and the bigger one that comes with an iPad). A 5th gen iPod "video" also works with the latest Apple USB power adapters. A 6th gen iPod from 2008 is hardly "vintage." 🙂

NOTE: If you go all the way back the 3rd gen iPod from 2003, they do not work with USB power adapter, because those iPods required a FireWire connection to charge.

For your particular model:

How to reset an iPod with a Click Wheel

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.

I have the same problem as Anhaja above.

I have tried resetting it numerous times and even reset the whole ipod and loaded everything back onto it.

It only charges through my computer

I plug it in to the charger (wall socket), the display screen lights, but doesn't charge.

I've tried multiple cords and sockets, nothing works for the ipod, but all work for my ipad

I have this problem with my 160 GB Classic. I have tried ten or fifteen different combinations of leads and plugs and it will only charge from my laptop, but only if I open iTunes. With out iTunes running the iPod wont charge from the laptop either.

There are specific "pins" on the dock connector that are for charging (versus data transfer). If your iPod did not charge at all, I would suspect a hardware problem, but since it does charge (on the computer), the cause may be software-related on the iPod, especially since it makes a difference between iTunes running and not running. When iTunes is running, the iPod is on a specific "state," which is different from when iTunes is not running (or it is connected to a USB power adapter).

If you have not already, you may want to try doing a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.

This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings. If you already tried this, or it does not help, please post back for other considerations.

Oh, before doing a Restore, and make sure you have tried doing a simple Reset (restart the iPod), if you have not already

I have tried re-setting using the buttons on the front and re-formatting using I-Tunes but it will still only charge while connected to I-Tunes.

Same problem. My iPod classic charge from a wall charger but only from a PC.

An old FireWire wall plug charger allows me to charge using the wall socket, other than that every usb charger cable and plug has failed. What is it that links the FireWire cable/charger and my MacBook that only these work I wonder.

Mine is doing the same thing. My 120GB iPod Classic will charge on any computer I plug it into, and will charge if I plug it into the USB outlets in my car. BUt it will not charge on wall chargers or my Audiovox dock.

I'm having sort of the same problem, my iPod is very fussy with the charger it connects to. I have three chargers that all worked fine and now only one works and that is only from time to time. Otherwise my safest bet is to just plug the usb cable into the computer.
