iPod Classic will not charge from wall outlet

My iPod Classic 80G will charge from my computers and my iHome dock, but not from the wall outlet. The cord, outlet, and adapter all work. We know the regular adapter works, it's an Apple universal USB to wall adapter that charges our iPad. We tried other cords (have two), other outlets, and even my kindle 2-prong adapter. Nothing worked. Suggestions?

I have the same problem. Tried charging it with all the apple chargers I could lay my hands on, but the iPod would only charge with the computer. I purchased a new apple charger. Still didn't work. I rang up apple and booked to see a technician, which I did this morning. I took in all my USB cables and chargers including the new one. The tech tried it with all the cables and chargers. Still didn't work. Another new one was taken from stock to try. Still didn't work. Would charge with their computer, also. Finally we found a charger that it did work with. An old one which they have had in the shop for years! Since my iPod Classic, which was purchased back in March 2008, all of the internal workings of later adapters, not iPods have been changed. Consequently, none will work with the old 6th generation IPod Classic, which is now considered Vintage. I suspect this is the issue with all older iPod Classics purchased around the world.

Not to be outdone, I went to a Hifi store to try a couple of other brands of adapters, such as Belekin, before purchasing one. Still no success. The old vintage just won't work with modern adapters, so charging via the computer is the only way to do it. Frustrating, but at least the ipod classic is not at fault, and is still in perfect working order :-)

I have an 80GB Classic as well. I had the old 10w larger wall charger that came with the TV cable where you can play movies via a TV, and it always worked to charge by iPod. Last year I noticed that this did not work anymore, and that it would only charge via USB port on my PC. I also tried the 5w charger, because my wife has one that came with her Nano. That works fine. Somewhere between when I purchased the iPod and today, the Classic no longer works with the charger I had. I can find no other explanation than Apple must have changed the software, because my hardware works fine and it hasn't changed since I bought the iPod. I can charge my phone and other USB devices using the older Apple adapter I have, so I know it works.

I am a little annoyed I have to buy another charger when there is nothing I did or changed to make the iPod not charge anymore. I'll spend the money because it's not worth getting another iPod when the one I have works perfectly fine except for this glitch.

I wish Apple would correct this. There is no reason the newer chargers should not work with the USB cable if the power is regulated properly by the device. All USB chargeable devices should be compatible with all USB adapters and ports that are out there. That is what makes USB so convenient.

This is the kind of thing that is why I use Android devices for phones/tablets.

Perhaps I can add to the confusion.

I have 5 iPod Classics, (not for sale). All 5 of them would would charge with ANY type of charger. I recently had a motherboard changed on one of the iPod's. Since doing this, this particular iPod and ONLY this iPod has become fussy about the charger it will accept.

Like others have reported it will only charge using a low power charger, (5 W). It will also charge using an automotive charger that I have. I don't know whether to blame the hardware, or the software because after I received my iPod back, I had to do a complete reset and full restore.

To my knowledge, Apple has not changed the software in the iPod Classic for a number of years.

By the way, I have the latest iPhone with 128 GB of memory. I prefer my music on a separate device.

After exhaustive testing here's what I have determined. Some iPod Classics will not charge when using a high powered charger, (2 amps).

Using a charger that is rated at about 1 Amp I'm able to charge just fine. I have verified this with about 5 chargers. Both automotive type, and wall type

This can be fixed with a firmware update from Apple. Please send feedback to the link below.

I have developed the same problem recently on my 80 gigabyte iPod Classic. It is several years old and has been using the original 5 watt Cube wall charger which used to work fine. Now it will only charge from the computer USB whereas if I plug it in the wall it not only will not charge it loses charge during the process. I bought a new Cube and a new cord. I've tried resetting the unit several times but still the problem exists. Any ideas from the Apple community would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Try doing a Restore on the iPod, if you have not already. You said you "tried resetting the unit," but a Reset is not a Restore. A Restore erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings.

If that does not help, use your computer's USB port to charge it.

I had exactly the same problem unless I plugged my iPod Classic straight into the USB on my Mac. I solved it by searching the house and finding my original Apple charger and lead that came with my iPod when I bought it and it works perfectly. I can only assume that later USB leads and/or chargers are wired to the old Apple style iPod connecter in a slightly different way.

My ipod classic 80gb will not charge from wall outlet but will from usb via computer. This started a few months ago. I bought a new "old style" 5v cube charger with a new cable, reset it countless times, did software updates and even a restore.Still no luck When charging on the wall outlet it used to go to the big green battery icon. . Now it goes to the menu. When I try to shut it off it goes to the big battery but just cycles between a "filling batter" and says charging to the word "charged and quickly goes back and forth over and over. What are some "other considerations" you might have. Thanks!
