DVD Player freezes at a black screen, will not play DVDs.

I just updated my MacBook Pro. Running OSX 10.8.5. Now, my DVD Player will not function. As soon as I open it, it goes to a black screen and freezes. I downloaded another DVD player trial version and it works well, so it is not the DVD drive. Is there anythig I can do to fix it quickly? So frustrating!
