"External force" doesn't mean "on the outside of the phone". It means force that originates from a source other than the thing being bent.


I'm guessing you don't know too much about materials science. Wood warps when it dries. See this:

And a swelling battery definitely applies force, albeit slowly, to an iPhone. The force is certainly external to the frame components
