vertical, coloured lines

hi,

I'm getting the strangest thing happening. After restart the screen goes gray then random coloured vertical lines draw on the screen.. trying to restart by pressing the start button for several seconds doesn't help... the macbook just turns off then back to the vertical lines.. took out the power plug but that didn't help either... the only thing that got the MB back to normal was taking the battery out then back in. After that the MB restarted normally.

I have a second MB, which had the same problem today. One of the two has had it's RAM upgraded the other hasn't been openen at all. So it's probably not a RAM issue.. the only thing I can think of right now is the heat. It's over 30 deg C and the MB's seem to be running very hot... but that's just a guess.

thank's for any feedback.

I sent my computer in for repair without trying the deep reset of the PRAM, so I don't know if that would have helped or not.

Good news though! My computer has been repaired and should be back with me in a day or two. 🙂 So hopefully the logic boards are no longer on backorder and others won't have to wait as long.

Hi there, so a couple of days after resetting the Physical Ram the lines came back, I took the macbook down to my local Apple Retailer and they took a look.
They replaced the logic board and reccomend anyone with the problem take their macbook back to a Apple Store or call the AppleCare support to get the issue looked at.

Seems to be working okay since the logic board was replaced.

Hi, I think you need to get it back to the store or call Apple Care ASAP. The issue is most likely a faulty Logic Board that needs replacing.

The clearing of the PMU is only a temporary fix and the issue will probably come back after a few restarts. After all when you spend the amount of cash you have you want it to work without having to find work arounds.

Good Luck

I just got the vertical lines today after having my MB since the day they went on sale (1.83 basic white 2G, 10.4.7). No problems after the !0.4.7 update. But...

Yesterday I installed Core2DuoTemp. Today after resetting Pram 3 times and having the problem recur at every startup, I started thinking about recent changes. So after reading the posts here I wondered about startup order etc., Checked my startup items folder and deleted the new item installed from CoreDuoTemp. Not a problem since then and I tried 8 shutdowns and startups to see.

I don't think the problem is with CoreDuoTemp -- I suspect that something in the new system update is sensitive to the loading process. BTW, I disabled Calendar Alarms in the startup sequence since I don't use it.

I'm somewhat alarmed by the reports of logic board replacement, but so far so good. Comments?

I bought a brand new eMac 3 years ago, it started to suffer the notorious "Kernel panic" symptoms and the optical drive died just after my 12 month warranty expired, I sold it on ebay and bought a 12" iBook. The iBook failed after just 1 week with the famous "Logic board failure" I then sold that on ebay and bought a brand new MacBook on the day they were released in the UK............

It has gone yellow around the edge's, the keyboard panel is starting to lift from the main lower body, it "moo's", and now it has started with all this "vertical line - not booting Bo**oX", I've parted with well over £2000 in the last 3 years on poor quality Apple computers! All I wanted was something that "Just works!", I'm going back to an Xp based machine, I'll have to put up with the odd virus but at least they "work"!!!!!!!

BYE BYE Apple..................it's been emotional

Hello, I have had my MacBook 2.0ghz for approx six weeks now. about three weeks ago I installed the online software update which included 10.4.7.
After installing the update and resetting the p-ram and restarting I only got a grey screen! No chime, no pinwheel, nothing then after about 20 seconds coloured vertical lines filled the screen, and the only way to restart was to hold down the power button for 3 seconds or so. it still did not want to start properly, Just vertical lines. So to see if it was hardware or software that caused the problem I removed the battery and hard drive, and restarted again. this time I got the qustion mark indicating there was no operating system. then I replaced the hard drive and it booted normally. this happened again about a week or so later and I had to go through the same procedure to get it to boot. I read in a forum that this behavior has been noted by several people with Macbooks and one person suggested re installing 10.4.6 to remedy the problem. So I did, its been another two weeks since I re installed 10.4.6 and the Macbook has not faulted at all.
Today I called Apple and spoke to a lady and told her of the problem and much to my supprise she said it was the first she had heard of it!!.
Question: Has this problem been addressed by apple and if so, What is the answer? if it booted ok without the hard drive installed, it must be software, what are your thoughts?

Hi Folks,

Had my first experience of the vertical coloured lines this morning. Followed the 'fix' on this forum and my MacBook now breathes again. Have tried only a single reboot but that worked without any drama.

I get the impression that the vertical coloured lines are likely to return at some unspecified point in the future. Lets hope it is after Apple acknowledge and fix the problem with the 10.4.7 update in the very near future; unfortunately, my experience with my mooing MacBook doesn't fill me with confidence (it's mooing as I type).

Kind regards,
Billy

I am having the same vertical line problem. I just got the computer less than one month ago and did not start using it until about 2 weeks ago.

The computer was also sent with a defective power cord, which was not charing the battery (defeating the purpose of a laptop) -- so now I have to make a second trip to the Apple Store.

The RAM on this computer was upgraded and shipped from China.

same problem: colored vertical lines. macbook 2.0, 1 G, 10.4.7, smc update installed 8/17/06

It all started after installing the smc update. The next morning I noticed a pronounced clicking noise coming from the vent area. That lasted for roughly 25 minutes and eventually faded away. After waking from a prolonged sleep the noise returned and lasted about as long. No other problems were noted. I called applecare and we ran through several tests, restarts, etc. All seemed okay until a later awakening from a prolonged sleep. Called applecare and they suggested that I bring it in to an authorized service center. Before I could do that, that evening when I went to use the macbook , again following a prolonged sleep, I was greeted by the screen gradually filling up with thin, tread-like vertical colored lines. The computer was now totally non-responsive. Called applecare agin and they had utimately was told to bring it in service.

When I brought it to the genius bar at the King of Prussia apple store, the 'genius' looked at it as if he had never seen or heard of this problem before and, noting a tiny spot on the corner of the case of my macbook, insisted that the unit had been dropped and that that was the cause of my problem(s). Said that I would probably be re-quoted by applecare and that I could expect a repair in the neighborhood of $1,000. In fact, it has never been dropped and it's a comfort to see that I am not alone in experiencing. So for now, it's on its way to service and I'll have to wait and see what they do.

Got the same problem today.

The MacBook had a audio setting problem also (internal speakers were not working since the MacBook kept setting the audio to digital audio (red light in sound out port) and the analog setting wasn't even present. Called Apple, MB will be picked up tomorrow)

So today vertical lines on the display. I thought perhaps it is a RAM problem (third party RAM). Have 2Gb installed. Took it out. put in the original 512Mb. Vertical lines again.

time to call Apple and amend our service call.

I am also suffering from this-I have had the MB for 2 days! I did upgrade-well an Apple Centre did-the RAM to 2GB using Dane-Electric, the day after purchase. I presume from the thread that the RAM has nothing to do with it. I am not sure about setting the startup disc thing-, helpsorry quite new to macs, but in terminal the nvram -p gave the same answer and I too have found adjusting the volume with the keyboard does not change the volume in the one from the menu bar--help?

Aug 26, 2006 10:14 AM in response to BikeNut

I suffer the same problem of vertical coloured bars upon startup. It appears to occur only when restarting or shutting down while screen brightness is set to lower than 100%.

I am not sure what brightness triggers it, but I've been able to restart successfully with 100% brightness and then have the vertical coloured bars appear if trying to restart when brightness is set to around 75%

Could indicate a graphics-related software problem, as someone else has suggested?
