vertical, coloured lines

hi,

I'm getting the strangest thing happening. After restart the screen goes gray then random coloured vertical lines draw on the screen.. trying to restart by pressing the start button for several seconds doesn't help... the macbook just turns off then back to the vertical lines.. took out the power plug but that didn't help either... the only thing that got the MB back to normal was taking the battery out then back in. After that the MB restarted normally.

I have a second MB, which had the same problem today. One of the two has had it's RAM upgraded the other hasn't been openen at all. So it's probably not a RAM issue.. the only thing I can think of right now is the heat. It's over 30 deg C and the MB's seem to be running very hot... but that's just a guess.

thank's for any feedback.

Hi,

Ok, my problem started when the built in iSight camera stopped being found by the hardware. I read a post about this happening to someone else and resetting the PRAM seemed to work for them. Didn't for me and the camera still doesn't work. Anyway, I gave up on the camera issue for the day and restarted again, only for the screen to fill with the coloured lines! This was turning out to be a bad day!!!! Reset the PRAM again, and it rebooted fine. I thought i'd see if anyone else had had this problem and read a few forum posts about it being a 10.4.7 problem. So, I did an Archival install and have kept my OS at 10.4.6 since. Does anyone know if this really is the cause and if it's to do with the 1st or 2nd 10.4.7 update (combo update or not)? I want to run the SMC firmware update but I need to be on 10.4.7 to do this. If it's an issue with the first update, maybe I can go straight to the Combo update or vice versa, if it's a probem with the Combo update, maybe I can just run the 1st update?

Sorry - long post but would be grateful for any answers.

Thanks

I'm also having this issue -- colored veritcal lines and freezing. It started about a week after I installed 10.4. I reset the PRAM and PMU and it solved it. I then upgraded from 10.4 to 10.4.8; thinking that would take care of it. The computer was fine for one night. I left it sleeping when I went to work because I was afraid to power down. When I came home, I worked for about 10 minutes (in Word) and then POW -- it was back.

I have a very important paper due soon and I really need this computer. Any additional advise would be appreciated.

Also, I am just out of warranty. 3 months ago I had another issue with a dim screen. I took it to the Apple store and the tech told me it wouldn't be worth paying their $250 fee, that I should just buy a new computer. (I can't afford a new computer - I paid $1600 for this one just 3 years ago.) I had it repaired elsewhere for $99 (it was the reed switch) and its been fine until I installed 10.4. Could this be related? It doen't seem like it since my issue is exactly like others describe not like my previous issue? I've been an adament Apple fan for years, but I am really frustrated.

Hi, there, I know exactly how it feels, I have been having the same problem with the new MacBook.

It sounds like it could either be a software issue with the graphics memory or a hardware issue with the heat sink.

Is the iBook getting very hot where the Power Supply plugs in?
Have you checked you have the latest firmware update for the iBook?

Thanks for responding.

I checked out the firmware, but the Apple site says no update is needed. And, the computer doesn't seem particualry warm at the power source.

Finally, I also found the logic board program and it does cover my serial number BUT it expires in 2005 so apparently I'm no longer eligible. It's hard to understand why there would be a time limit if the product has a known defect. I never received any recall notice. Also, I ran the hardware test and the logic board passed. Is it possible that the logic board is failing even though the test says it's okay?

I would assume that it is possible as my MacBook reported the logic board was fine but apple insisted on replacing it as faulty.

It looks like the best option for you is to talk to an apple repair center or apple store about geting it checked over to see what actually needs to be done. Sorry I couldn't make any further suggestions

Hope it doesn't cost too much and Good Luck with it!

Well my problem may well be solved 😀

Week 26 MacBook with 1GB Ram - delivered end of June

End of August it develpoed Random Shut Downs - contacted Apple and it was uplifted and sent to Celestica in Telford for repair.

Delivered back to me , this time in France in mid September.

Used for 1 hour that day and an hour the next day

The following day on booting up I got the vertical coloured lines - could not get rid of them at all - battery out , Zapped PRAM etc .

Same following day - gave up trying to use it.

Returned to UK in Mid October and contacted Apple - they insisted I had to take it for repair . Finally got it uplifted and off it went.

Waited and waited and it got to month 5 of the MacBook's life and I still didn't have a working MacBook.

Wrote to Cupertino told them full info with dates etc and sent a copy of the repair slip.

instant reaction - phone call and 24 hours later I have been
told that a new C2D MacBook will be winging it's way to me

Just thought I'd send an update.

I had the repair completed by an Apple store and, of course, the solution was replacing the logic board. Although my serial number matched those effected by the Logic Board Repair program at <http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/> since the computer was older than 3 years, I was responsible for (and paid) the entire service fee of $294.85.

Apparently, Apple knew they manufactured a defective product, but didn’t issue a recall or notify me so that I could have the replacement made before the system failed and the program expired.

I'd like to send Apple a letter expressing my disappointment, but lo and behold, there is not a single consumer contact e-mail on the entire Web site. The only place I found to submit my expereince to Apple was the feedback page where "Apple welcomes your feedback on its products" but "we cannot respond to the comments you submit."

If anyone knows of a valid e-mail contact information, please share it.

Thanks.
