iTunes automatically starts playing when iPhone 5 (w iOS 7.0.2) is connected to car radio via an Apple cable

I'm using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2, regardless it is the most recent update

When I plug my phone into my car radio's USB port (Apple cable, not knock off) iTunes starts to play the very first song in my large iTunes library.

I plug into the USB port to charge it and to connect the phone to radio in order to use hands free audio.

I have tried two or three different cables, it happens with all cables and again all are actual Apple cables.

I do not recall this happening with iOs 6 or at least as much.

With iOs 7 it happens every f***ing 😠 time. Extremely annoying and dangerous (I may get so frustrated by this that one day I might just smash the phone or the car radio :-) to the equipment.

I have to unlock my phone, go to iTunes and pause or stop the song/iTunes. ➖➖

The app does not show as being open, that is why I have to go iTunes itself, the old fashioned way, so to speak. 😕

It sometimes happens when I plug my headset in (also Apple brand, the basic ones that come with the iPad and iPhones) to phone and have tried the two different ones I have. It only seems to happen if my phone is not in use (i.e. I am on a call and switch to the headset it does not happen)

Interestingly this issue with the headphones and iTunes automatically starting happened more with iOS 6 and than with iOS 7. Ironically the opposite is true with the car radio, USB port cable, charging and iPhone — it rarely happened with iOS 6.0 but with iOS 7.0 it always happens.

I cannot seem to find a fix here but I do see I am not the only one with this annoying issue.

Please someone (APPLE!) figure out a fix. ➕ℹ➕

PS I have even considered NOT having any of my music on my phone — none at all — which not only would solve the problem (I would hope!) but be extremely inconvenient and defeating the purpose of only having an iPhone vs an iPhone and an iPod.

PPS - I probably left out something really relevant, like what color is my car 😝, so if I did, please let me know.

Of course deleting all the music on the iPhone will stop it from playing music...

I thought that turning off USE CELLULAR DATA would work. As you all found out, it didn't. That only stops iTunes Radio from working. Any music you have in iCloud will still be availble.

If you have Cellular data turned off, music in iCloud may show up but it will not play or download.

In the other discussion I found out how to remove all the music from the iPhone.

Select the iPhone in iTunes and uncheck Sync music.

I've been tinkering with this on a couple of my cars and a number of rentals. The problem really isn't iPhone - all they did is allow the radio guys to do stupid things. Some cars work really really well, and you can listen to your tunes, streaming radio, apps, phone, whatever. Other cars have a very simple mission and immediately jump to playing the first song on the list (whatever begins with 'a') - no stop, no pause, no other alternative to the mandatory music. Others are somewhere in between - you might be able to listen to your ball game app for awhile, but at a random moment the car tells the phone to start playing that 'a' song.

The only sure- fire fix that I have found is the two-cable fix. Plug your phone into a dumb USB outlet for charging only. If your car doesn't have one, get a lighter adapter to USB. Then get a audio (aux) cable with a male headphone plug on each end. Plug one end into the headphone jack of the iPhone, the other into the Aux jack of the radio. Then your phone is in control and works normally, uninfluenced by the radio.

IT might be interesting to start a list somewhere ranking radios/cars with their level of user-freindly compatability with iPhone.

Interesting info, thanks for sharing. My 2011 Audi A4 works most of the time, but sometimes will randomly stop working when hitting "next track" and go back to first track. Siri is another story, usually she doesn't work (it's like the car microphone doesn't activate and she can't hear anything I say). Pausing/muting the car radio, then starting Siri is the only half workaround I've found.

A 2013 Toyota Camry rental car worked really well for me. Everything seemed to be reliable, no issues in a few days of use.

SAme phone, three entirely different experiences:

2014 Subaru Forrester - does what I want, when I want. It even remembers what I had recently been listening to ( e.g. MLB, streaming music, etc.) and resumes that - great when stopping for gas or other errands.

2012 Honda Fit - Launches the first "A..." song when connected. I can run other things okay as long as I can maintain a connection. But if I travel through a gap in service, the car launches the dreaded tune again. So it usually works okay in civilized areas. Frustrating when it drops.

2014 Volvo XC60 SUV - Mandatory tunes from the phone. No stop or pause allowed. No other sources. If the phone is plugged in, it must play your tunes.

I didnt figure out how to solve the issue without headphones plugged in but if you are listening to music through headphones and it wont play because its plugged into you car all you have to do is unplug your headphone cord from our phone and plug it back in and the music should start playing again through your headphones/earbuds... Hope this helps a little, it worked for me!

I also have this annoying problem with iOS 8.02. As others have suggested, this appears to be a car radio manufacturer problem.

i don't have cellular data enabled for my music app. It appears to be a command the car radio sends to the iPhone (whether usb or Bluetooth)

the iPhone simply accepts the command and plays the first song in the list. There appears to be no fix for this issue.

Brand new iPhone 6 and a brand new car 3 days old for both and every time I plug in my phone to charge the radio goes off and I get the Jackson five ABC EVERYTIME the car starts surely there's a simple way of stopping the auto play? I want my phone connected for other things like the wonderful new "hey siri" on ios8 and I want to keep music on my phone for going to the gym etc. I've turned off the cellular button for music and the car has a manual 4inches thick and I can't see anything about auto play!

The problem is not with the iphone. It is with the cars audio settings. Go to "Bluetooth devices> advanced> auto play and select auto play off. I dealt with this aggrivating issue for almost two years before figuring it out. The cars bluetooth is signaling the iphone to turn on and play even if your cars radio is not tuned to Bluetooth audio. It does this so if/when you do select Bluetooth audio it can quickly play without having to be prompted to connect. Try this fix and it should solve the issue. i have a 2010 f350 with nav and sync. Depending on your cars media device the ques may be different to get to the Autoplay feature but nonetheless this is the issue. Hope this helps Someone.

I found a bandaid approach that seems to work. Go to: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/silent-tracks-various-useful/id366737722

You can download one or more "songs" of complete silence. In iTunes, you can right click on the Song, select "Get Info" then select the "Sorting" tab. Under "Sort As," you can put "A A A A" or whatever caption you want at the top. You can also do this with any song and make it go to the top. To be sure it worked, I turned my phone off and then turned it on before starting the car.

It's not perfect, but it gives you time to react without getting really annoyed with hearing the same song start up each time.
