iTunes automatically starts playing when iPhone 5 (w iOS 7.0.2) is connected to car radio via an Apple cable

I'm using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2, regardless it is the most recent update

When I plug my phone into my car radio's USB port (Apple cable, not knock off) iTunes starts to play the very first song in my large iTunes library.

I plug into the USB port to charge it and to connect the phone to radio in order to use hands free audio.

I have tried two or three different cables, it happens with all cables and again all are actual Apple cables.

I do not recall this happening with iOs 6 or at least as much.

With iOs 7 it happens every f***ing 😠 time. Extremely annoying and dangerous (I may get so frustrated by this that one day I might just smash the phone or the car radio :-) to the equipment.

I have to unlock my phone, go to iTunes and pause or stop the song/iTunes. ➖➖

The app does not show as being open, that is why I have to go iTunes itself, the old fashioned way, so to speak. 😕

It sometimes happens when I plug my headset in (also Apple brand, the basic ones that come with the iPad and iPhones) to phone and have tried the two different ones I have. It only seems to happen if my phone is not in use (i.e. I am on a call and switch to the headset it does not happen)

Interestingly this issue with the headphones and iTunes automatically starting happened more with iOS 6 and than with iOS 7. Ironically the opposite is true with the car radio, USB port cable, charging and iPhone — it rarely happened with iOS 6.0 but with iOS 7.0 it always happens.

I cannot seem to find a fix here but I do see I am not the only one with this annoying issue.

Please someone (APPLE!) figure out a fix. ➕ℹ➕

PS I have even considered NOT having any of my music on my phone — none at all — which not only would solve the problem (I would hope!) but be extremely inconvenient and defeating the purpose of only having an iPhone vs an iPhone and an iPod.

PPS - I probably left out something really relevant, like what color is my car 😝, so if I did, please let me know.

Apple has to know this problem exists. A little while back U2 released a free album that they automatically added to your itunes account. Everytime I got in my car iTunes started playing U2. It caused kind of an uproar that they had to release a U2 album removal tool lol.

I just got a new phone and I downloaded a ringtone pack So that is playing automatically right now which led me here. It's a little worse than Jackson 5.

It is crazy to think I have to delete this thing I just brought to fix this. But it's worth it. I guess no more purchases from itunes lol.

I have an iPhone 6 and this wasn't happening to me on this new phone up until a few days ago! It happened all the time on iPhone 5. Can someone please help??

I've tried most a lot of proposed solutions but they don't work! I want to be able to charge my phone and still be able to play my app while plugged in to the USB drive in my car.

For those saying the problem is not the iPhone or it is not an iPhone problem, you are right, it is not the iPhone causing the problem. Yes, it is the car causing the iPhone to automatically play the first song in the iTunes library every time you plug in the phone to your car's audio system. However, please don't tell me that Apple doesn't have a solution to this. It would be very easy for Apple to create a button in iOS with the option to ignore the autoplay command from cars and any other device that gets connected to the iPhone. Apple does not have control over what the car manufacturers do, but they surely have control over what iOS does and what it doesn't do. A lot of people like to have music stored in their phone for many reasons. Maybe they don't have an unlimited data plan and rather not consume their data streaming audio, or perhaps online streaming doesn't work well due to network problems in their area. Whatever the case, iTunes should be an option that we should have the ability to use comfortably after paying hundreds of dollars for this phone. So the idea of just wiping out the iTunes library may solve the problem for some, but it is not really a solution for those who would like to use the music they've purchased through iTunes. I think Apple oughta listen to their loyal customers and create a solution to this annoying problem. It's in their hands!

I'm guessing a little, but I think there are several issues going on here:

1) Car stereos that don't understand the iPhone and only have basic "MP3 playback". They will often be set up to just start playing if you connect/insert your "MP3 CD/stick". Lot's of car manufacturers have no clue and have electronics at least a decade behind the current state of things. This is the hardest to fix, unless there is a setting in the car's stereo for it. Something like "autoplay MP# on/off"

2) Songs on Pauze in the iPhone's music app. These will be unpaused on certain evens, like establishing a connection. Make sure you stop playing instead of pausing your songs before connecting the phone.

3) The Car stereo getting confused, thinking a bluetooth phone and an MP3 storage device are connected, while both are the same device. Again this is largely due to outdated thinking by the car manufacturer or having an older model from a time when MP3 players and cell phones were separate things. This then in turn sends confusing instructions to the iPhone.

4) Music app running in the background getting a "play music" command. Might or might not be the same as 1 or 2. Shutting down the music app might help, depends a bit on the iOS version how it works exactly, but usually starts with clicking the home button twice to show the list of running apps.

5) Car stereo with iPod support but not with iPhone support. This can give confusing effects when receiving a call for example, or using car navigation apps on the phone.

I hope any of this helps you figure out what your problem might be.

I find that replacing the car stereo with an after market one that properly understands smartphones solves all these issues. Not all manufacturers make it easy to replace the car head unit though. It comparatively a minor investment to the cost of a new iPhone if your car can fit standard DIN and can make a big improvement on your driving experience, especially if your car is not brand new.

I wish car manufacturers would make their electronics more easily upgradable and not sell new cars with outdated electronics to begin with. Updating it once a decade isn't good enough.

Lot's of car manufacturers put "MP3 CD" support into their systems somewhere early in this century, which you do want to play when inserted generally. Then USB MP3 devices came around and they just hacked that into the existing stuff they had and called it a day. At least that's what seemed to have happened a lot.

I'm new to my iphone6, and ran into the same problem. With a little testing, I noticed I only had this issue if I set my car radio to bluetooth input. If the radio was to AM, FM, or was off, I was able hear the map app's announcements. If you happened to press the "hang up" button, you could interrupt the current message.
