use the solution that rob_kuhn described. settings --> general --> usage --> all apps --> delete the apps that are messed up then go to app store and install them again.

worked for me. my twitter app was messed up for days and this was a quick fix. i tried all the other reboot, full shutdown, and connecting to itunes all of which did nothing for me.

I had the same problem and discovered my phone was trying to download an app I had just put onto my iPad. It seemed as though the two devices were having trouble reconciling which device should download what (kinda scary from a security standpoint). I went to the App Store and opened it to download again, which kicked the phantom app into downloading into the correct one, then deleted it.

😠 Can anyone help or advise please before phone is thrown out of window.?

I use What's App on my iPhone constantly, but recently it wouldn't open so I decided to update the App.....big mistake!

its now frozen on "Waiting".....after researching help on some of the sites, this is what I've done so far;

-rebooted (lost count how many times!)

- logged out of iTunes via Settings....& rebooted

- full system reset

- accessing icloud via settings & deleting the app

- tapping on the app & sayong 'encouraging words'

the app is still there, it doesn't give the option to delete it with the little cross, it is just showing 'waiting' but nothing is happening....I've been at it for hours

aany help or advice would be much appreciated!

thanks...

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This worked, I have tried everything from going into iFile to resetting the settings on the device, and this works. While installing the app, if "loading" text comes up below the app name, quickly hold on the icon and delete the app before it can finish installing. I hope this helps out someone else, good luck

I have an iPad Mini and had the ghostly icon for Google Docs after deleting the app. I followed your sequence of going to Airplane Mode and then turning on WiFi. I then selected the grey icon for deletion and It Worked! The odd thing is, however, that I have no cellular capability on this iPad and so there can be no cellular data element to the mysterious ghost. But it is gone so that is all that matters. Thanks for your help.

My Iphone 4s had this problem (after I upgraded to a newer Iphone, and stupidly attached the 4 to the same computer I was using to sync the new phone)

SEVERAL apps tried to install and could not. Of course, I have no cell connection on the old phone. I was planning to use it as an ipod, to serve music, and wanted to move music onto it after deleting all the apps. How frustrating to have the apps trying to reinstall and unable to delete.

Tried everything on this thread.

What worked?

going to Airplane Mode and then turning on WiFi. I then pressed the grey icon so it would dance with an X, and it did! It Worked!

THANK YOU!!!
