How do I solve the issue where the grand piano no longer sounds like a piano?

Hello,

I'm trying to get back the "Grand Piano" sound on my garage band. I don't rememer changing the sound but whenever I select it -whether it's a new track or adding to an old track- it sounds more electric and less like a "piano".

I was thinking of uninstalling garageband and then reinstalling it. Would this solve the problem? or should I run the upgrade again? is that even possible?

On my laptop the sound is fine, but on my desktop it is not. I also don't know why when you transfer garage band files from one computer to the next, the sounds do not translate. the computer changes it to something else.

In any case, I really want my grand piano back. but who knows what else is wrong and I have not yet discovered it.

Thank you for your help,

🙂

Thank you. I have only Garageband ´11 and 10.0 installed, still looking forward to more when I'm ready. Then I probably compare the files with my older macbook with OSX 10.8.6, where only Garageband '11 installed to find out if I chould add something.

Trying to find out how Garageband build its Instrument Library and organize it's audiounits. Do I understand it right, that the actual sound files is found in Sampler/Sampler Files, while the way the sound organises and works in Garageband i organized from the files in Track Settings, Plug-In Settings and Sampler/Sampler instruments? On that background, is it possible to add audio units manually? Or do I allways need a Jampack to install it for me?

The "Sampler" folder is holding the software instruments created from samples, the Track settings folder the software instruments created from synthetic sounds, and the effects for real instruments or the Master Track.

On that background, is it possible to add audio units manually? Or do I allways need a Jampack to install it for me?

You can install additional audio units in the folder /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/. But check them carefully for compatibility.

The best bargain, IMHO, is installing MainStage 3, even if you do not want to use it for performances. It will install all five JamPacks for a price much less than the price of a single Jam Pack, and you can use them from Logic or GarageBand.

But where do Mainstage3 hide the soundfiles? And how to get them installed in Garageband. Is it possible without messing up Mainstage?

It should to be necessary to install them for GarageBand.

They should appear automatically.

Have you restarted the Mac after downloading the additional content in MainStage?

GarageBand will show the MainStage instruments in the "Legacy" section, either as "Logic" files or "Jam Packs".

Installation places I am seeing in my Library:

For the loops: They are appearing in /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple, for example: /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Jam Pack World Music/African Zulu Kalimba 04.caf

For the Instruments:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/

/Library/Application Support/Logic/Plug-In Settings/

Download and run FindAnyFile. http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.phphttp://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php

The demo is free. Search with FindAnyFile for files with "Kalimba" as part of the name. Other than Spotlight will FindAnyFile search the libraries.

Hi Again Léonie

Yes I have restarted my mac more than once. I found the African Zulu Kalimba 04.caf with the Find File, a free app i appreciate much. The strange thing is it seems like Loops are hidden two differerent places.

1. In Home/Library/Audio/Appleloops/User Loops. It is where I find my Garageband Loops and my JamPack1 and some of the content I have moved there myself, as I store a copy of my loops another place in case they disappear.

2. In Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Appleloops/Apple. There I find all the new content.

I don't really get the difference. To me Library is the same, but here in the first case I have Appleloops/User Loops (and no Apple Folder) and in the second case I have Appleloops/Apple (and no User Loops Folder)

And in the meantime I have found out that there is much more wrong with my Garagageband '11 (6.0.5) than I thought, apart from the shortcut Command+alt+arrow is not working(I can live with that), I found out yesterday that when I use "new track/ guitar" the sounds are only piano sounds and only the same sound. It leads to the conclusion that I have to reinstall Garageband '11, as suggested another place in this thread. I is not a softwareproblem as I have a iLife '11 CD. But I have hesitated, as I also have Garageband 10, and I am worried that an installation of Garageband '11 will mess up Garageband 10. I really like Garageband '11, it can do something that Garageband 10 can't do, at least not without sincere tuning*. But Garageband 10 can do other things with drums for instance. How do I keep two well functional versions of Garageband? What do you advice me to do?

Thank you for taking your time... :-) BodilKreativ

In addition to above:

And when I find the instruments there is a difference too when i go to Library from Home or from Macintosh HD, it is clear that the content I find in Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files and Home/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files are not exactly the same. All the new content is found in the first place and the old content is in the second place. The same goes with Sampler instruments. Plug-In Settings only holds my old content both places. While Track Settings/Master and Track Settings/Real seems alike too both place, while Track/Settings/Software is extended with new folders and new content.

You are probably aware about the main difference between Home/Library/ and Macintosh HD/Library/

If you install software in Home/Library/ you can only access when logged in from your own user account. An installation in Macintosh HD/Library/ is accessible for users on the computer. The JamPack 1 installed by default only for one user. That is probably, why you are finding it in your user library. Newer GarageBand versions only install in the System library.

If you have the different versions of the same content in both libraries, your user library has priority. You can override the system installation this way. This can be a problem if the files in your user library are older, incompatible versions.

Hi Léonie

I didn't knew the difference... thank you. It means that I can have messed up something. Moving missing files to the wrong archive. causing override.

After serious comparing the two situations with my old mac mini HD i found out what belonged where, and what I have placed wrongly and moved files around to the right places and now it seems as garageband is working much better. All the new content in Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Appleloops/Apple seems to be there. The only thing I don't know is if the files in Logic are there? And I can't find the Medievel flute I had before and the other Medievel instruments, that seems to be a part of Mainstage3. This must be the next challenge... Do you have those instruments?

I am having "Medivial Lute" and "Medivial Recorder" in GarageBand 10.0, both in the JamPack "World Music". They do show, when I select a Software Instrument track and enter "medi" into the search field: As you can see, my instrument library is by now also messed up 😁 and many instruments installed three times, from GarageBand, MainStage, and Logic.

Hi Léonie

Thank you for the screenshot. Many things has happende since we talked, so I'm back now to the problems or solutions.

Yes I can see your "mess" and I found the instruments in my library, all fine. And in Garageband 10 you can seach for the instruments, but in Garageband 6.0.5 I can only search for looks, so I had to find them manually. I swapped to Garageband 10 and it seems everything is fine there, both instrumentfiles and loops.

So back to Garageband 6.0.5., now all the loops are missing except for a few selfmade loops. So as the loops are all to be found at the destination Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Appleloops/Apple, it seems Iike Garageband 6.0.5 can only find the loops in Home/Library/Audio/Appleloops/User Loops, where only my own few selfmade loops are located.

Is the only solution to drag the loops back to Home/Library/Audio/Appleloops/User Loops (or use timemachine) or is there any other solution?
