iOS7 duplex printing doesn't work

Hi,

we at university offer several printers via AirPrint to our users. All worked fine until we upgraded our iPads and iPhones to iOS7. Under iOS7 it is not possible to print in duplex mode. When we disable duplex mode in the iOS print dialogue, we can print. I checked the connection with tcpdump on our print server. The iOS devices don't even contact the print server after sending a job with duplex enabled. iOS doesn't report any errors. The job simply vanishes. All this works with iOS6 devices. Does anyone else have this problem?

I just checked the iOS console, and the message is:

ipp://xxx/printers/rzkswdp-e2: Print-Job failed: Unsupported sides "two-sided-long-edge".

Perhaps it depends on the type of printer? This one is a HP LaserJet 4250.

Are you sure you are on 7.1?

Did it work before, i.e. with iOS 6?

Are you sure CUPS is correctly configured to support duplex printing for this printer?

7.1: yes, I'm sure ;-)

iOS 6: I have no idea

Correctly configured: CUPS shows this, so I guess it is:

Driver:	HP LaserJet 4250 (grayscale, 2-sided printing)

I just checked, and the answer is yes. FWIW, I'm going to add other printers to the CUPS server and will see if perhaps other models/drivers don't have the same issue.

One more data point that might explain why it doesn't work for me even with iOS 7.1: I added the printer using a .mobileconfig profile that I created with Apple Configurator. Others seem to advertise the entries using DNS. With Apple Configurator, you only specify the IP and the path.
